SUNRISE FROM OUR WINDOW

Occasionally I get woken up by a striking colour that suddenly illuminates the room through a chink in the drawn drapes. Getting up quickly and grabbing the camera ensures that I catch the spectacle of the sun coming up...

VICTORIOUS

Our Lady of Victories Basilica is a Catholic church located in the Melbourne suburb of Camberwell. Romanesque in style, it was designed by architect Augustus Andrew Fritsch (1866 – 1933) and was completed in 1918. It is one of five churches in Australia with minor basilica status. The current parish priest is Rev. Brendan Reed.

Our Lady of Victories occupies an imposing site in Burke Road and, in a city where most churches of the era are built in the Gothic Revival style, its simpler lines make it immediately recognisable and distinguishable. It has a distinctive copper-clad dome topped with a golden statue of the Virgin Mary holding the Christchild.

SOLSTICE SKY

We are just experiencing the Winter Solstice in Australia on June 21. The word solstice came into Middle English from Old French, from the Latin solstitium. This is a compound of sol- (sun) and -stitium (a stoppage), so the word means “the sun stands still”, reflecting the time when the Sun apparently stops moving north or south and then begins moving in the opposite direction.

In every year, there are two solstices. In the northern hemisphere, the June solstice happens when the Earth’s north pole is tilted its maximum amount towards the Sun. The December solstice happens when the north pole is most tilted away from the Sun. Thus, the June solstice is the day with the most sunshine, and the December solstice has the longest night. The opposite is true in southern hemisphere, with the Winter and Summer solstices in June and December respectively.

Appropriately, on this shortest day of the year, we've had a very wintry day with cold, rainy weather. However, in the afternoon the sun came out briefly as if to promise that from now on the day will start to grow longer.

A DAY OF SKIES

Four moments taken in a day, with each one documenting the sky at the time. Cold and fine in the morning, with clouds massing in the afternoon, while rain came in the evening and into the night.

SUNSET THOUGHTS

“Clouds come floating into my life, no longer to carry rain or usher storm, but to add colour to my sunset sky.” ― Rabindranath Tagore

RAINY

We've had a few good falls of rain in Melbourne after a rather dry start to the year (with only 7mm grand total for the month of April). This total was easily surpassed in one day with the rain gauge recording up to 20 or so mm...

FULL WORM MOON

March 20, marks the the equinox, when the sun passes over Earth's equator (from our perspective on the planet) and the Northern Hemisphere is tilted toward the sun. That leads to longer days (and the start of Spring!) in the north and shorter days (and Autumn) in the south.

The day also marks the full moon of March, called the full Worm Moon. The full moon occurred at 9:43 p.m. EDT (0143 March 21 GMT) and will be the third and final "supermoon" of 2019, according to NASA. The space agency describes supermoons as a full moon that occurs near perigee, the closest point to Earth in the moon's monthly orbit.

Happy Autumn (or Spring!) to you wherever you are in the world.
