Various Senegal from K7s (2008)

Jus de Mangue 100% Naturel 100% Sénégal

In the series of K7s radioshows, this time K7s from Senegal broadcasted in 2008 by the ConcertZender.

From the program info: "a stack of cassettes with artists from Senegal who play in the Mbalax style: Kiné Lam, Ives Niang, Abdou Guité Seck, Assane Gaye, Titi, Fallou Dieng and Mbaye Dieye Faye.
Mbalax developed in Senegal in the late 1960s and is a mix between modern Western and popular African influences, such as Soukous (Congo) and Coupé-Décalé (Ivory Coast), and traditional Senegalese music, with spicy sabar percussion. All sing in their native language Wolof."

Marema - 2019.Aug.17 Schokoladenmuseum, Köln

Before digitizing some vinyl, first a recent discovery!

Marema Fall  from Dakar, Senegal

Marema Fall is the new talent in Senegalese music. She was born in the Dakar suburbs to a Mauritanian father and a Senegalese mother. Her mother was a fan of Tracy Chapman, whose acoustic music joined young Marema in the cradle and would remain a key influence. Listening to Tracy's music made Marema decide to learn to play the guitar.
After graduating from the music school of the Maison de la Culture de Dakar in 2011, she began as a backing singer with leading Senegalese artists, including Didier Awadi, Yoro Ndiaye, Edu Bocandé, Metzo Djatah and Idrissa Diop. Meanwhile, she composed and wrote her own repertoire. Ivorian band leader and guitarist Mao Otayeck, known for his work with Alpha Blondy, Salif Keita, Tony Allen and Stevie Wonder, noticed her then and accompanied her in the production of her first solo recording.
Following the release of an initial single, "Femme d'affaires," in 2014 she won the Star Africa Sounds Jury Award, the Bema jury award and the prestigious Découvertes RFI award, enabling her to undertake a 15 countries tour. She was also nominated to the All Africa Music Awards in the "Best female artist in African inspirational music" category.
Marema’s music blends traditional influences with contemporary beats. Her borderless melodies touch upon African sounds as well as blues, pop and rock. Her repertory reflects her mixed identity. In "Femme d’affaires," the rock guitar meets the xalam, a popular string instrument in West Africa. In the song, Marena pays tribute to strong women who rely only upon themselves to move ahead. A talent urgently worth discovering.

Anyway after hearing such music, you'll never forget his name and always check out something new coming from him. That has not always been to my taste, but the good ones I really liked a lot!!

Jeri-Jeri & Mbene Diatta Seck - 2014.Jul.23 Festival Krems

Yes Yes, back in Mango Land again, 3rd day in a row, this time with some live music, good to sweat out yesterday's overload...

Info from the original FunkHaus Europa (name changed to Cosmo) broadcast:
Today Senegalese master drummers [mangue: sabar foli?] meet with a German producer: Berlin techno-legend Mark Ernestus presents the Senegalese project Jeri Jeri.
Poly-rhythmic grooves from the Sabar drums, the Tama talking drum and dry beats connect to a rough electronic acoustic trip in the savanne. Since a few years the legendary producer and Hardwax- engages himself with African music and a.o.remixed Konono No.1. In the case of Jeri-Jeri Ernestus doesn't try to beef up the music for an international audience, but to present the essence of the music.

Jeri-Jeri leader Bakane Seck (in 2013): "This project of course comes from Mbalax and Sabar, but we have something new, a lot of changes and ideas come from Mark [Ernestus]. In the beginning he just came to Dakar every few months to find the way how to go about this project. Then in addition to Jeri-Jeri, which is my family - a very big family of sabar drummers - many big musicians are playing in these recordings, but everybody was happy to work with Mark because he is bringing something very new that nobody has done here." -- more at npr-radio

Orchestra Baobab - 2017.Jan.31 Live in London (DL)

Orchestra Baobab - 2017 January 31 - London

Main Space - In The Round (+ Estée Blu as support act)
2017 sees the return of In The Round, a series of intimate performances staged in a rarely seen fully seated concert set-up at the Roundhouse. One of Africa’s great iconic bands, Orchestra Baobab create some of the world’s most sublime and truly distinctive music.
Formed in 1970, taking their name from the Dakar nightclub where they were resident, they fused Afro-Cuban rhythm and Portuguese Creole melody with Congolese rumba, high life and a whole gamut of local styles, kick starting a musical renaissance in their native Senegal, which turned the capital, Dakar, into one of the world’s most vibrant musical cities.
The band released dozens of recordings before disbanding in the mid-80s but it was their neglected 1982 album, Ken Dou Werente - which included many of their most famous songs, ‘Coumba’, ‘Ledi Njemme Mbodj’ and ‘Utru Horas’ - that became a cult-classic, re-released to huge acclaim by World Circuit Records in 1989 under the title Pirate’s Choice.
The band reformed in 2001 with encouragement from Senegalese superstar Youssou N’Dour and the following year released Specialist in All Styles, their first album in nearly 20 years.
In 2007 they released Made in Dakar, and now, nine years on, Orchestra Baobab are back in the studio recording their fourth album for World Circuit, which is set for release in Spring 2017.
With support from Roundhouse Resident Artist Estée Blu, a singer-songwriter who embraces genres such as Jazz and Gospel and champions authenticity and imagination through Neo- Soul and R&B. Often likened to Solange, Lianne la Havas and Corinne Bailey Rae, Blu equally brings her own style to Contemporary R&B.

Orchestra Baobab - 2008.Sep.12 Pure Jazz The Hague NL

Had this post almost completed before my "summerbreak", so with almost 2 months delay I have for you a 2008 concert by Orchestra Baobab.

Top band on Pure Jazz 2008: the legendary Orchestra Baobab from Senegal, Cuban swing and traditional West African music in a group catchy sound. Especially the cheerful and colorful tenor saxophonist Issa Cissoko made a party and sought all the time eye contact with the audience. (sources: flickr - flickr)

Apart from above pictures didn't find much about the Pure Jazz Festival (seems 2008 was the last edition), so here short something about (Orchestra) Baobab:

In the early 1970s Barthelemy Attiso, born in Togo, was living as a law student in Dakar, in his free time he had learned himself to play guitar. Together with Balla Sidibe, Medoune Diallo and Issa Cissoko he started a band called Orchestre Saf Mounadem. Soon they could get a residency at the recently opened Baobab Club in Dakar, so they recruited some more members, mostly former musicians rom the Star Band and changed their name to Orchestra Baobab. They played Afro-Cuban music and as a multi-ethnic and multi-national band they fused this with their own traditions, like harmonies and drumming from Casamance (in southern Senegal), melodies from Togo and Morocco and Wolof tradition from northern Senegal. Till 1985 they recorded some 20 albums and when in 1979 the Club Baobab closed its doors the band succesfully sought new venues to play. In the meantime a new style of music, called Mbalax, had developed and steadily gained popularity, so that in the mid 1980s Orchestra Baobab with their Afo-Cuban based music were considered 'old fasioned'. This resulted in a break-up of the band, some members forming or joining other groups, and Barthelemy Attisso even returning to Togo to practice law.
After their break-up some of their albums were released in Europe, these got much critical acclaim and sold reasonably well outside Senegal. In 2001 at instigation of their English record label and successful Mbalax musician Youssou N'Dour they came together again and started preparing for an international come-back tour. This tour was so succesful that they decided to continue with the band and since then they have made regular tours around the world and even some new recordings. During one of those tours they played at the Pure Jazz Festival in The Hague, Holland.

Listen to the first track

BAOBAB-20080912_Pure Jazz The Hague CZ

setlist: setlist: 1.Sutukum / 2.Dee Moo Wor / 3.improvisation / 4.Nijaay / 5.Colette / 6.Bul Ma Miin / 7.Utru Horas / 8.Gnawoe

In '3.improvisation' I noticed a rhythmic pattern (clave), which is also used in Ko Sira by Oumou Sangare, learned this pattern a long time ago from a drummer interested in all sorts of rhythms, it goes like this (in which X = hit and - = pause):
X--X--X---X-X---
LrlRlrLrlrLrLrlr

If you like to start learning this one best use both hands as shown under under, in which Capitals are Hits (X) and lower cases are dummies (-).
If split this up, first eight above and last eight under, you'll see that no Hit is at the same point in time, that's what makes this simple pattern more difficult than you think at first to learn and keep in time. But when you've mastered it, you'll always keep it with you and recognise when used in music.

Thione Seck - Orientation Concert (2011)

In the comments to the previous post with Senegalese music, I asked Falilou Ndiaye if he may be had some live reccordings from Thione Seck. Despite his enormous collection of Senegalese K7s uploaded to youtube, he didn't, so I diggedin my archive and can present you the only one I have, a fairly recent live recording of Thione Seck at the (again) Music Meeting Festival in 2011. Here's the background info I could find:

Thione Seck - Orientation Concert:

Thione Seck at Music Meeting 2011
source: musicmeeting.nl/2011/thione-seck-orientation.html (google translation)
In collaboration with the Holland Festival the Music Meeting presents for the first time in Europe the splendid repertoire of Orientation, with in a starring role the master singer Thione Seck.
Thione Seck Ballago is one of Senegal's greatest singers and musicians in the mbalax genre, along with Baaba Maal, Omar Pene and Youssou N'Dour, although he has not achieved the same success outside of Senegal as in his own country. Seck hails from a griot family. His career began in the seventies with the internationally renowned Afro-Latin orchestra Orchestre Baobab. He then formed his own band Raam Daan, which up until now weekly performs under the artistic direction of Seck in Penc Mi, Seck's nightclub in Dakar.
The mbalax of Thione Seck has it's own sound, and is distinguished mainly by the rapid pulse of the sabar drums. Secks unique phrasing and extremely powerful phrasing are instantly recognizable among Senegalese, he is also highly regarded for his layered lyrics. In recent years he was inspired by Indian and Arabic influences, for which his album Orientiation* is a clear and very inventive example. This album was created in close artistic collaboration with more than forty North African, Arabian and Indian musicians, who know how to create a glowing fusion of their different musical traditions. Seck said that the soundtracks of Bollywood movies were a major influence on his inspiration for this album.
*my note: Orientiation first issued in 2003 on local K7, and in 2005 internationally on CD (see discography)

Youssou N'dour 1985/86 Amsterdam (K7)

1985.Jun.22 Paradiso
In the mid 1990s together with the Africa Soli K7 (previous post), I got a K7 with 1985/86 concerts from Youssou N'dour broadcasted on Dutch radio. There was no info about when nor where these concerts were recorded, and only a few titles of songs were given.

So dived again in the Dutch beeldengeluid archive, which brought only one hit for "Youssou 1985-1986" forward:
Backline - Youssou N'Dour / 1986.Jul.23, VPRO / medium - radio

Searching Dutch newspapers archives (delpher.nl/nl/kranten - leiden.courant.nu - utrechtsarchief.nl) online revealed:
  • on 1985.Jun.22 Youssou N'dour & le Super Etoile de Dakar performed in Paradiso, Amsterdam
  • backline was a radio program with concert recordings on Dutch Radio 3 VPRO (each wednesday 21-22hr)
  • on 1986.Jul.25 (friday) and 1986.Sep.03 (wednesday) Youssou N'dour & le Super Etoile de Dakar performed (both times) in Melkweg, Amsterdam
pictures of the 1986.Jul.25 concert are on gettyimages

1986.Jul.25 Melkweg Amsterdam - pictures by Frans Schellekens, see at gettyimages

Furthermore in a so called "AfricanLiveMusic vine" ca.15 min. of Youssou's 1985.Jun.22 concert in Amsterdam has been send around the world on discs.
Conclusion:
  • 1985 recordings are from Jun.22 concert in Paradiso, Amsterdam
(and probably re-broadcasted 1986.Jul.23 as a sort of promo for the concert two days later at Jul.25)
  • 1986 recordings are from one of the two concerts in Melkweg, Amsterdam
Listen here to: Alla Kassira - traditional from Mali (rec.1985.Jun.22)

NDOUR-1985-86_Live in Holland (corrected)

Setlist of 1985.Jun.22 (with help of aduna and Falilou Ndiaye):
1.Alla Kassira - traditional from Mali / 2.Immigres / 3.Xale Yi Rew Mi / 4.Sabar - Moussa Coly  / 5.Moule Moule
Setlist of 1986 (with corrections from Falilou Ndiaye):
1.Donkaasi Gi / 2.Daby / 3.Barguet

I labelled the tracks according the dates, but as the last tracks from 1985 are from the encore and the 1986 are a little mellower, I can imagine the 1986 tracks put in front or in between the 1985 tracks to get a more real complete concert feeling. Well that's upto you, whatever you like best!!

More 1980s live recordings from Youssou N'dour et le Super Etoile de Dakar:
  • 1982 concert in Abidjan, Ivory Coast (issued 1983 on LP as 'Show!!! a Abidjan') posted by aduna at his old blog, download link still OK
  • 1985/86? concert at Thiossane Night Club, Dakar - issued 1986 on K7 as 'Jamm - La Paix - Vol.12' - at likembe
  • 1986 concert at London's Town & Country Club, London: audio p.1 / audio p.2
  • 1987 Immigres (Live In Athens*) [9:37] with Peter Gabriel intro - video at vimeo
  • 1987 Sama Dome - My Daughter (Live In Athens*) [9:42]  with (same) Peter Gabriel intro and credits outro - video at vimeo
* hey what about an official release of full recordings of these concerts, think it would beat the 'Live in Athens' issue by miles!! (which is understandable as Athens was as support act)

PS: that "AfricanLiveMusic vine" contained also in Amsterdam made concert recordings of Super Djata Band (1985.Dec.Nov.18, ca.14min), Super Biton de Ségou (19841986.Oct.02,  ca.18min) and Baaba Maal (1986.Sep.07, ca.20min). Ahum, VERY INTERESTED in all, so if anybody here has any, please contact............

Youssou no XIPPI but LIVE (1992)

Had in mind to jump over the border into Senegal and post one of the XIPPI K7s of Youssou N'Dour, bought the first one in Senegal in 1992 and the second in 1993/94 in Guinee.
Remember that when listening for the first time to No.1, I was a little disappointed, mostly because of less percussion and some of the lyrics being in English. But after more playing came to the notion that in whatever language the vocals the music is great. And actually some of the lyrics were and still are very good also, at least the English ones, as I still don't speak nor understand Wolof. For example in The Same (Benela) from No.2 Youssou sings about music (reggea, rumba, r&b, etc) and people all around the world being "The Same", "everybody has a heart", everybody gets the feeling".
That's a still and always will stay very valid statement, especially in these times of "Refugee Crisis", where too much is spoken about REDUCING the NUMBERS, while reality is kept silent: refugees are PEOPLE having to leave their HOMES in order to be able to LIVE a decent LIFE!!

Youssou N'Dour at Glastonbury 1992.Jun.28    Glastonbury 1992 Poster
Preparing the XIPPI post, found out that both K7s are already posted elsewhere and also still available (links at bottom of this post). So decided to post something else from Youssou.

Some time ago I could catch from Dutch radio a live concert from Youssou at the UK Glastonbury Festival in 1992, which is the same year as the K7s, so nicely fits together. He played first 4 songs from XIPPI, then contined with some older ones and a duet with Peter Gabriel. It's a concert at a western pop festival, where his Mbalax music is received by a very enthousiatic crowd, so anybody thinking about complaining for the music being "less African", please listen to and try to understand Youssou in "The Same" from XIPPI No.2!!

Youssou N'Dour - Fital (1992.Jul.28 at Glastonbury)

XIPPI No.1 (1991, K7)    XIPPI No.2 (1992, K7)
PS: here find the links to the XIPPI posts

*XIPPI No.2: dial-africa.blogspot.nl/2011/06/youssou-ndour-xippi-vol-2.html
In my live download I also included a comparison between the two local XIPPI K7s and the international CD Eyes Open, for which all tracks from K7s were remixed. Made this comparison a longtime ago when thinking about buying the CD, which I didn't do because I had all tracks (OK, except one) already on my Senegalese K7s.

Enjoy Youssou's Mbalax Manguetically LIVE!!!!
