Boho Rental in Los Feliz, CA

Its the Los Feliz apartment of Jennifer Laskey and Hunter Hall.
As far as I can tell, it's heaven.
I'll even take the cat.

Holy Smoke

I've been burning a lot of incense lately. And not just incense - candles, smudge sticks - anything that makes a lovely smell and purifies my space. A friend of mine used to call me a Hedge Witch, which is an herbalist who uses tinctures and dried plants to heal and spell cast. From what I understand, Hedgwitchery is loosely based on the old wise woman tradition, one of the oldest eclectic magical traditions. The hedge witch serves as midwife, seer, healer, maker of magic charms. And while I certainly don't practice any black arts, I do embrace the hedge witch image and connect my burning of dried herbs to prayer, healing and space clearing. Do you have a little hedge witch inside of you too? What's your favorite thing to burn in your space?

Worn Beauty

I love these used up, curated spaces. Someone LIVES here. They sink into things. They surround themselves with the stuff of life. They ruminate. They converse. They sit and do the bills and talk to lovers and loose their keys and inhabit these spaces with all their hearts. I just know it!

The Case for Rest

Last week, I was in a cabin near Lake Tahoe. I was resting. For the first time in a few years, I slept. I really slept. Twelve, thirteen hours a night. I took naps. I plopped into bed in the middle of the day and fell easily and fast asleep for one, two, even three hours.

I'm a work-at-home mama. I have two young children, one of whom is a high energy special needs child. I am "on" all of the time. I'm in bed at midnight or 1am and I'm up at 5am to the sounds of children, dogs and a small urban homestead. Don't get me wrong - it's wildly rewarding. But I miss sleeping.

Rest. Restoration. Sleep. Quiet. Oxygen. Darkness. Comfort.
It's more important now than at any other time in my life.
I must, somehow, get more rest.

The Spring Equinox

In the Pagan wheel of the year, March 20th and 21st mark the spring equinox: that liminal point when the calendar is half way between the solstices (darkest day and the lightest day of the year).  I'll be spending my spring equinox at the Texas Style Council CAMP Retreat for bloggers in Central Texas. In addition to my usual travel gear, I'm packing a little candle, some dried sage and a mini-temple bell for when the weekend presents a quiet moment for meditation. I like to honor these earth-based holidays with a little altar-making and thanksgiving.

Do you celebrate the natural earth holidays?
How do you honor the spring equinox?

Bohemian History | Krazy Kat Klub

Every once in a while I run into a little bit of unknown history about bohemian culture in the USA. It's always such a delight to get a glimpse into the counter cultures of yore. The Krazy Kat Klub, a bohemian speakeasy and night club near Thomas Circle in Washington DC, was in operation during the early part of the 20th Century. At the helm of this boho lair was Cleon Throckmorton, a portraitist and theater scene designer who encouraged all sorts of drinking, smoking, art and shenanigans.

In 1919, a reporter for the Washington Post described the Krazy Kat Klub as being “something like a Greenwich Village coffee house”, featuring “gaudy pictures created by futurists and impressionists.” It was also mentioned in the published diary of Washington, D.C. resident Jeb Alexander, who described the club as a “Bohemian joint in an old stable up near Thomas Circle - a gathering place for artists, musicians, atheists and professors.” Sounds like my kind of place!

The big feature of the Krazy Kat Klub was a tree house built in the center of an outdoor courtyard. Visitors could climb into the treehouse, have a smoke and order drinks. Here are some photos of the Krazy Kat Klub and it's clientele below. Notice the sign above the door that says, "All soap abandon ye who enter here!"
