Matheus - Work The Math

Copious amounts of splatter breaks, rave leads, and bubbling bass lines. Super cracked out jungle. 90s rave puked from a breakcore sound system. Everything sounds crisp and clear. Well chosen samples provide extra energy compelling you to bang your head and simultaneously fluid. Even the more subdued parts are nearly bursting with barely contained energy. More on the jungle side compared to alot of breakcore releases these days. Track four "News Please" starts off with some clever faux-news samples of the raunchy variety which lead nicely into a heavy hitting ravecore banger. While everything is well produced and edited, there is an over use of certain rave-y synths/leads and jungle bass. The usage of said sounds does provide a continuing theme, though a little variation would have stepped things up a notch. The title track "Work The Math" begins with a melancholy string section seemingly promising a path different from the first five tracks, but it quickly falls back in with the vibe of the rest of the album. It would have been awesome to have the initial strings come back in to create a more energized emotionally compelling track. "Yesterday" provides an answer to these problems. Finally breaking away from the themes of the majority of the record, you're reminded of greats like Squarepusher and Wisp. Emotionally stirring arrangements and spot on vocal sampling backed with nicely edited breaks which are a tad more toned down. THis blends into a beautiful entity. "Serious" also breaks away from the standard sound of the release. It begins with a playful IDM ditty that eventually evolves into a pretty hard and dark breakcore jam. "Unknown Vibes" is wonderfully jazzy, another instance where we are reminded of Squarepusher's apparent influence on Matheus. That said, this is no rip off. The rhodes get trippy in delay land having fun playing with all their panning partners in crime. Hi-hats and rides dance between your ears swinging back and forth while snares set the pace and the rhodes piano continues to soothe and make things rather stoney. "Work The Math" ends with "The End of the Beginning", a distinctly Matheus breakcore banger clocking in at just over ten minutes long. The real stand-out tracks have to be "Yesterday" and "Unknown Vibes". Despite the fact you may be reminded of other talented artists, they are unique to Matheus and reveal sounds and potential that will keep you wondering how Matheus will grow in future releases. "Work The Math" is a solid full length of breakcore tinged jungle with the odd IDM flourishes that will keep you coming back to the Matheus trough for more. Co-released by Sociopath Recordings and Core Collective Records. Core Collective Records is co-owned by Matheus and another great UK producer, MATT:Scratch.

[Metafiziq] V/A - Damaged N Broken

 photo damagednbroken_zpsd6a011a5.jpg

Fantastic hard music mostly originating from Eastern Europe and supporting that scene. Tracks from artists most of us know such as Stazma the Junglechrist, Goretech, Ruby My Dear, and a whole batch of talented musicians you probably haven't heard of but will be glad of the lifted ignorance once you digest these tasty bits of nasty pretty dirty sometimes awe inspiring electronica.

Personal Rant: Jad Atoui - Leaf Sequence is probably my favorite track on here (besides Gore Tech's dark dirty jungle/breakcore pure awesome offering) and its not just because of the minimally beautiful 'IDM' flavors...... its the sample at the end. Jad Atoui samples Cex. Cex's early 2000's releases "Role Model" and "Oops I Did It Again" are all time favorites of mine. I forget which of these albums Jad Atoui pulls the sample from, but the sample consists of Cex speaking on his perception of music and how he releases it. He essentially says that accessibility is important. That statement is important in this day and age when people are willing to release any old inaccessible garbage they pooped out in their bedroom. I've done it myself. Artistic Quality control is important, you shouldn't be content with releasing anything but your best work. As far as it be accessible to reach the masses as he implies, I would much rather have 1,000 people hear my music than 10, exactly as Cex says. But that is a more personal decision on the part of the artist, whether they care if anyone hears it or not. To elaborate on my previous statement, if you're going to release music and put it in front of people, give them the best you can.

1234 - How To Get To 1234

 height=

"How to get to 1234" is third in a series of albums, each a separate alias of the artist known as Iamdeadsmiles58. With "How to get to 1234" Tito (as Iamdeadsmiles58 is known) shows a softer side and that he has influences that are far more eclectic than simply grindcore and harsh electronics. Iamdeadsmiles58 cites Trip-Hop as a big influence on this record, which is exhibited well with the slower paced break beats and synth noodlings like in "femmes jeux vidéo" which contains chip bleeps and bloops swimming in and out of existence within the french chatter and consistant low bpm mechanical drum break. . While more mellow than other Iamdeadsmiles58 efforts, it is no less dark. Low octave synth growls abounds. For those that aren't fans of high pitch screams, which happens to be an Iamdeadsmiles58 trademark, are absent. 'Its a good thing' as a certain home maker felon would say. High pitched grind vocals would only detract from the well established vibe of "How to get to 1234". Well chosen samples mesh well with what appears to be Iamdeadsmiles58's blossoming talent with psychedelic downtempo hip hop flavored message tracks as shown with the track "Corruption". I've watched this artist mature over the past few years, feeling out and developing his own brand of harsh grindy electronics, well made with a minimal set up. "How to get to 1234" shows a more seasoned artist, willing to explore far different sounds from his previously established style. Everything isn't perfect. "Another Joy Killer" has an enjoyable, slow breakcore vibe, which is later elaborated on in the next track "I Created a Monster In You", though goes on too long. "I Created A Monster In You" has well done high auto tune vocals and some sweet gabber kicks and supporting drum kit, but again it drags on a tad too long. With each track clocking in at on average five minutes, it makes each song a slight endeavor. Although, despite the longer song times, there isn't blaring repetition to be found. Only in the piece "Alone" do you find any kind of irritation. It takes until nearly four minutes through for any real development to happen, but the majority of the track is the same few notes on the piano pounded out over and over again. The piece would be much better suited to a phasing minute interlude. The album picks up some with the next track, a veritable cemetery drum and bass joint brimming with warbling organs and wailing females. The real beauty in this track is the supporting sound fx flourishes and samples. The light break that phases comes in and out does the same diddle through out. Still, much promise is to be found. If honed, a more refined version of this style is very much of the breakcore great, Ablecain. Though Iamdead was inspired by trip hop, little is to be found here. Instead there are promising buds of Breakcore, Stoner Hip Hop, and Jungle/Drum n' Bass. My hopes are for this artist to move in those directions even more with the next effort. Until then, enjoy "How to get to 1234".

Released on the superb french net label, Sirona Records.

z999 - Distorted By Design

 height=

The cover art for z999's "Distorted By Design", when considered, is a very straight forward message as to what you can expect to find inside. Classical music taken to broken and distorted places. The intro itself lets you know whats up immediately. Distorted, clipped rhythmics laced with pretty strings. Of the four songs provided in "Distorted By Design", there is rarely a moment where you do not hear stirring strings or complacent piano. As far as the breaks, to some the most important part of Breakcore music, they contain superb edits and thoughtful arrangement. The final song, "Monkeyballs", makes me wonder if this is what it would sound like if Ove-naxx did classicore. A fine release. The only problem i find is that it is too short. I want more!

Various Artists - Irreverent Music V.A. Showcase

Photobucket

Irreverent Music drops a 2 Disc release, their first official release cat. [IMU01]. Irreverent Music V.A. Showcase is a top notch collection of hardcore EDM. Ranging from 3 minute breakcore bangers to 8 minute hardcore jaunts reminiscent of the classic Bloody Fist style. This hardcore jaunt spoken of is The Kraker's "StupidDruggedCunt" track, it keeps your attention all the way through. Audiotist's "Friday Fever" possibly evokes the most sorrowful reaction from the word "fuck" from a breakcore track. With 2 full CDs worth of material, none of which leaves you wanting, makes a must download if not purchase the album when its released on CD. You can go to Irreverent Music Website for pre-order information as well as download links for album art and the music in FLAC audio format as well as a torrent download option. The below link is for the VBR mp3 zip, which does not contain the album art.

WSicko - Midnight Notes

Photobucket

Beautifully constructed Classicore by WSicko. The first track starts everything off with a slightly melancholic piano piece, quickly supported by strings and melting hi hats. The pieces contained within morph between neo classical flourishes and well crafted breakcore. The sounds and samples all blend together quite nicely. The end result is 5 tracks that fit in on the dance floor just as well as they do in a bedroom.

VA - Tumult and Disorder part 1

Photobucket

Up and coming label Fuck It, I Quit! throws down a sickly ill three-way split/compilation featuring breakcore warriors Burglecut, Junkcore, and Headshot. All three bring their A game. Junkcore's track "c'est froid" really stands out. Part dirty banger, part nostalgic dream machine, all breakcore gold.

glasscarpenter - ForestOverdoze

Photobucket

Glasscarpenter drops a 4 track EP of extreme range within its less than 15 minute run time. The first song, "IntoChaos", starts things off in your face with distorted amens and pitched snares to tickle any breakcore fans libido. Starting from track 2, "MapleJoints", things become less straight forward. Rhythmic glitches woven between stranded cut up amens and ghostly synth leads howling. The first three tracks are relatively short, none going over the 3 minute mark. The final track however is over 7 minutes long, providing the majority of the albums run time. "EnviormentallyRetarded" is very much like a lonely yet heart warming walk through a mid day forest, on your way to a rave camp out. I was pleasantly surprised while listening, having never heard any other offerings from this artist, and being fairly musically jaded that is not an easy task. I have a feeling this release will please many a listener, from mid-90s IDM fans to the must stuck up glitch connoisseur.

V/A - "White Lighter"

Number 27 for the Bludclot Recordings catalog is another ridiculous compilation of ruffneck jungle and core varieties spiced up with other flavors and elements familiar to our output. After a rough patch that seemed to spell the end for the label and Grindthieves family, the passion and drive to press on – even and especiallythrough the truly terrible times in life – we banded together with another sick batch of artists for the tongue and cheek titled/themed “White Lighter” compilation. A sort of slap in the face and homage to the so-called “27 Club” of famous musicians who’ve passed on too early at the age of 27 and peculiarly found with a white lighter in their pocket, Bludclot brings it rough, rugged, and ruthless once more for number 27 on the 27th of April in the year the world is supposed to end.
Some familiar Bludclot names plus a nice helping of artists not before featured on a Bludclot release that you’re probably familiar with already, this is yet another world class gathering of rudeboys and soundkillers aimed at demolishing your speakers and ruining the dance in the best way possible.
01 : Ghost – “Crystalize”
02 : Kungfused – “No Way”
03 : unsoundbwoy – “Angel”
04 : Mirra – “Freedom Dance”
05 : FFF – “Breathing Fire”
06 : B.I.N.T. – “36th Chamber”
07 : Mr. Bad Monkey – “Those Damn Rasta’s Took E Again!”
08 : Stivs – “Boom Wah Tek Ruff”
09 : Stazma The Junglechrist – “Meltface (Sir.Vixx Remix)”
10 : Wanklerotaryengine – “Smoke Fi Fyah”
11 : Apzolut – “Strange Things Moving”

Kodek - Heavy Metal Is Not Heavy At All

Kodek slathers on a heavy spread of breakcore country jams, with no fruit to be found in its amorphous seedy gel. "Hit you in the face with a PBR" breaks with Japanese girls ready to soothe your wounds. Fuck your face distorted breakcore, perfect for those visits home to mum.
