Napalm Christ - "2013 Demo"

It's been a bit since I've posted here at Magicore, and this time around I bring you the first coming of Napalm Christ. Goatprayer is going to make this and some additional songs available for purchase on cassette, but being the good folks that they are - you can have these for free! Crusty deathy blacky metallic goodness that you need to bash your face off with.

Light Bearer - "Silver Tongue"

If you're a fan of post-metal and post-hardcore, even if not a fan of those genre terms, then Light Bearer's new one entitled "Silver Tongue" should absolutely not be slept upon. Plain and simple. Huge walls of guitar and coarse vocals with a nice and varied backbone of drums, bass, and atmosphere. All executed superbly. From front to back, beginning to end, "Silver Tongue" tells a story successfully and expertly, as you would expect from this description of the band:

all encompassing DIY art, music and narrative project, based around a story written by their vocalist Alex, who drew influence from the writings of Philip Pullman’s "His Dark Materials" trilogy, John Milton’s "Paradise Lost", and the Book of Genesis.

With defined intros, segue ways, and outros, "Silver Tongue" is a heavy soundtrack to some more refined
creative outlets among the metal masses. Truly something to be experience from front to back in one sitting.

Outre - "Tranquility"

Awesome and fairly technical thrashy black metal from Russia courtesy of Outre. Kick ass riffs and chords, vocals are a nice breed of thrashy blackened death, and the drums are full of double kickdrum assaults under really rad fills, rolls, and cymbal workouts. Get it.

Dominium - "The Incursion"

A perfect hybrid of black and thrash metal varieties. Everything that rules from both subgenres, turned up and melting into one another. Simple as that. Listen.

Jungbluth - "S/T Tape"

It's not in my nature to lie to the people about the music, so I'm not gonna start now. How I happened upon this release, I have no clue. What happens is, I spend about one night a week just downloading a shit ton of music from numerous and various sources, then I spend the following week (attempting to) going through it when I've time. This has left me with a HUGE (and ever increasing) folder of new music and an impossible way to discern where I got what from. So, when I cue something up, I give it a few minutes and either continue listening because I dig it or shitcan it because I don't. If I dig it, I go looking for more info to see if I can buy it, if I can post it, and in both cases I look for as much information about the artist and release as possible. Fun life, eh? And that's just what I do with my free time.

Anyhow, Jungbluth's self titled tape was something I happened upon and from about 3 seconds in knew that I was gonna love. I was right. When I went looking for info on these guys, I read a lot of reference to "screamo" as a genre - a genre that I 99.9% of the time cannot stand. Give it up for Jungbluth being part of the .01%! But, as you might expect from myself and Magicore, it's never that black and white. Jungbluth craft a ridiculous blend of, as mentioned, "screamo", but it is far beyond that. Oldschool punk rock, screamo, post/progressive metal tendencies, hardcore, and much more are all swirling in this sonic maelstrom - and this self title tape is hugely enjoyable and recommended if even a small fraction of anything mentioned thusfar is something you're even remotely into, guaranteed.

So. Go get a tape if you can. If not, definitely get a download.

Here.

Zillah - "Substitute For A Catastrophe"

Crushing metallic goodness here from Zillah, who offers up their entire catalog for free on Bandcamp. "Substitute For Catastrophe", their most recent offering, is definitely my favorite. This shit is six years old now, but still sounds as devastating as the day it hit the streets. Equal parts death metal, hardcore, progressive metal, and math rock, this shit is just pulverizing  and essential listening for all metal aficionados out there. I love the sound of the drummers snare so much!

The Eye Unclouded - "Tongues Like Mazes"

Is it black metal? I suppose so. It's definitely "progressive metal", or whatever the kids are calling it, too. There's a good amount of that ambient/drone metal flavor, to be certain. There's no vocals, but really you don't need or even want any on this one. Progressive ambient post instrumental black technical metal? Ubetcha.

SYPHLUST - "Fuck You Bruce Willis"

As if the dude behind James Doesn't Exist et al isn't prolific enough already, he basically finishes off and rounds out the band called Syphlust, cited as a guest on each individual track and the album as a whole. Following the trend of all Nikolai Gawin related output, this shit is incredible. He, along with two other rude dudes, craft some really over the top brutally awesome noisy grindy chaotic mathy hardcore. Check the shit out. I mean, if you think you can handle it, anyhow. Torn Flesh Records strikes again.

Galenus - "Ideology"

I've been finding a lot of incredible music from Chicago lately. Midwest, WHAT?! Here's another recent awesome discovery from the windy city. Galenus. A duo that crafts ripping and brutal technical death and grind varieties of heavy metal. Nice guttural growls complimented with slightly higher pitched shrieks over some truly relentless drum work and riffs. Nothing super innovative, but this is quite well produced and really tight technical heaviness - so if that's your thing, you're gonna love this.

Law Of The Tongue - "Law Of The Tongue"

Hittin' you again with some more Torn Flesh Records material! Seriously, they've got so much great stuff, making it hard to keep up and decide what to share - also keepin' me from checkin' out metal material that's not on their label, ha!

This time around it's the self titled mammoth that is Law Of The Tongue with some six ton unapologetic stoner & doom varieties of truly rockin' heavy fuckin' metal. Toss in some southern/sludge tendencies and you're good to go with this one. Riffage layered upon riffage covered in bluesy jazzy metal drums topped off with a perfect growl and alternating scream vocal delivery. Sick cover art and brutal name, once more from the Torn Flesh camp. Heavy.

Battle Pope - "The Holy Trinity: Bitches, Dicks, And Gonorrhea"

tooth_eye has posted several releases from the absolutely incredible Torn Flesh netlabel, and for damn good reason. Most concisely put, Torn Flesh is a free metal netlabel, but it is obviously much more than that. With over 400 free releases covering the expansive wasteland of all things "metal", you're pretty much guaranteed to find something you'll love on this label.

This time around it is the self-described "evil incarnate, dick slinging, heathen killing, tyrannosaurus flex fuck machine from hell" calling itself Battle Pope. Easily the most accurate description of music you'll read this week. This is an absolutely incredible piece of attitude driven psychobilly southern doom groove punk'n'roll. Extra points for one of the most ridiculously awesome album covers you'll see this year with an album title to match.

Six Dead Horses - "Horn, Tusk, Antler"

Look at that fucking bad ass. He's bad ass. So is this music. Somewhere in the realms of doom metal and sludge, Six Dead Horses hold court. Waving a battle ax to end all battle axes, Six Dead Horses swing their heavy weapon and lob heads into piles on the daily, son. Large atmosphere and huge riffs, all at once cavernous and swampy. With a name like "Horn, Tusk, Antler", you know you're about to get your metallic guts gorged clean from your body with the first listen. Featured on the ever awesome Lurker's Path blog, you basically suck if you don't check this one out.

Amarok - Self Titled

Hi. I'm new here. I'm gonna start slooow and heeeaaavy. Like good sex.

Amarok is a 4 piece outfit from the Westcoast of the United States. They want all your weed, all your whisky, and all your soul. Doom, stoner, death, and sludge metal varieties take center stage here and battle it out for the domineering role. Only to realize that, as it is ideally to be experienced in a live environment, the mention of almost entirely vintage Sunn O))) (the company, not the band) amps as the outlet for this beast should not go unnoticed and all aforementioned horn throwing worthy varieties of metal are welcome to fornicate with one another in an effort to get you off here.

Obviously, you should buy their vinyl. It's sexy. The artwork, alone, is worth the asking price. Hang that bitch up, and when you're not listening to the record (which should be, like, almost never) you can put it in that old Bananarama sleeve you're scared to admit you own the wax for. Win/win. But. Not everyone is going to do that. And, awesomely, Amarok knows this. So they give you the option to have it in 320 MP3 for free. If you don't go to their show(s), however, the bitch on their cover will sever your balls from your body in a downtuned redlined mess of growls, chords, snares, & crashes. And you'll miss one of the most awesome and slept on bands in this/these genre(s) operating today. For shame.
