Kryzgx - "Kryzgx I"

Genuinely creepy and ritualistic atmospheric black metal from Kryzgx, and artists name you'll never remember how to spell correctly. It is mixed and recorded by Munkie Poo, featured here in the past, so I'm curious as to whether or not this is an alias project from him. Either way, the fuzzed out melodies and leftfield vocal flexings are a nice take on a timeless classic, in terms of the black metal genre. Check it.

Black Antlers - Discography

I have seen the Black Antlers name around a few of my regular online black metal haunts but never managed to take the time to give them a listen, despite having one of the coolest names in that whole scene. The Torn Flesh Records crew dropped some Black Antlers material last night, so that sealed the deal - I simply had to check them out. Glad I did.

Torn Flesh has co-released the bands first two demos, both free from the band and Torn Flesh alike. Black Antlers is painfully minimal ritualistic dark occult ambient noise and raw as fuck cavernous black metal. Not easily digestible for those not already into such sounds, perhaps not even so for those seasoned listeners out there. But if you're even marginally into such things, you'd be doing yourself an awful disservice not even attempting to understand these releases. This is darkness as sound.

Profond Barathre & Rorcal & Malvoisie

The prize here is, without question, Rorcal's offering - an absolutely enveloping piece of exorcising black air. But there really couldn't be two better slabs of sound to sandwich that bad boy besides what appears here from Profond Barathre and Malvoisie. This is an epic black metal experience. Available on CD or free download from the bands on their Soundcloud page for the project. Limited to only 200 CDs, I would really like to see it get the vinyl treatment, as well. I'd snatch the shit right out of that. Get ritualistic with the digital download, if nothing else.

Black Vulture - "Way"

Self proclaimed "experimental black metal" from Rio De Janeiro courtesy of the wretched creature known as Black Vulture. This definitely isn't going to be for everyone, even seasoned black metal fans and experimental music fans alike. At moments, truthfully, I find myself taking it seriously and pondering why in the hell someone would release this pile of filth. But at just as many moments, if not more, I'm totally engaged, intrigued, and thoroughly enjoying what I would call an absolutely brilliant release. It's a fine line between genius and insanity, as they say, and Black Vulture puts you to the test trying to discern where its material falls.

Most notably putting off is one of the primary vocal styles employed, a sort of kitschy screech that I'm just not very fond of. But, I find myself not noticing it or enjoying its use in certain places on the record, being fully engulfed in enjoying some other aspect of the track at the same moment. The drums on "Way" range from a sort of hack live improv feel to really well orchestrated stompy chuggy metal chops; sometimes it sounds like percussive vomit and at other points it feels so spot on and well rehearsed. Other than that, I really enjoy the sound of the snare used. The bass and guitar work sounds like blackened noisy psych rock workouts on a ten strip while throwing a party in Hell. Spastic while still very much like a heat seeking missile on its path into the mouth of a volcano, the tone and efforts here really make the album shine.

And fuck it, I like the album cover, too.
