Pornography - "Heaven"

Blasphemous one man noisy doom project from Tennessee. Long winding roads of feedback and pained shrieks through trance inducing and water torture-esque drums.

Deuil - "Acceptance/Rebuild"

Belgian post black metal and forward thinking doom by way of Deuil. "Acceptance" spends half of its 20 minutes in borderline ambient/drone doom realms before ultimately unleashing a blackened beast from the post-apocalyptic bowels of post-whatever-as-a-genre while the fittingly titled "Rebuild" continues on the basic trajectory of "Acceptance" as it attempts to rebuild your psyche after the pummeling it received from "Acceptance". Loud, deep, angry, inviting.

Urtek - "We Hate"

I can't keep up with the Torn Flesh Records netlabel, this has been established. I've missed out on posting more than a handful of albums in at least 100 releases since my last post, no bullshit. What can ya do, non-stop ruling from the TFR camp. This shit here is from the Washington based grind outfit known as Urtek. The TFR post on Facebook describes them as "doomgrind" and that's pretty god damned accurate. Download and rip your face off to this!

Wolveserpent - "Perigaea"

Wolveserpent have made a new demo available for free download at their website. Super ritualistic psychedelic blackened doom shit right here. They have a ton of other releases available for free download on their site, too, so get up to speed with what they've been doing the last several years if you're not already caught up.  But, yeah, this "Perigaea" demo is fucking killer. Dark, psychedelic, trance inducing, sludgy black doom metal. Great stuff!

V/A - "Relapse Records Winter 2012 Sampler"

Despite not fully harnessing the digital era, a lot of established metal labels are dipping their toes in to test the waters. The ever awesome Relapse Records has been on the forefront of keeping it real, in terms of physical product and such, as well as putting some feelers out with new media in the form of free podcasts/mixtapes and free samplers.

The winter 2012 sampler from the label comes packing heat with a ridiculous collection of material from artists on their roster this year, along with a sneak peak of what's yet to come. If you're familiar with the label, then you know what to expect. If you're not down with Relapse, I gotta question your dedication to metal music. Either way, cop this mammoth collection of free tunes including work from Pig Destroyer, Hooded Menace, Christian Mistress, Baroness, Weapon, Death, Dying Fetus, Murder Construct and more. Each and every band bringing it heavy and relentless.

In a word: essential.

Cyclopian - "Cyclopian"

Post doom metal in a thick coat of flat black. Cyclopian deliver a roller coaster ride with their self titled release that is rooted in doom metal but extends its tentacles outside of that cage in countless directions at once. Elements of black and death metal highlight the sound when it's really heavy, orchestral post metal movements fill in the gaps. Quality fuckin' shit.

Dead To A Dying World - "Dead To A Dying World"

You can get this for free at the band's Bandcamp page, but you should probably buy the record if you're into it. Read the description of the physical release & you'll understand why. Anyhow, this is quality fuckin' heavy metal music right here. Doomy, deathy, blackened goodness. Crushing and beautiful. Upright bass and cello totally set this off and make it stand out from the crowd.

Bellow - "Bellow E.P."

Pretty much all year long I have been blown away by the amount of incredible music spewing forth from the womb that is my home town of Minneapolis, MN. Some of the stuff has been covered here on Magicore, other stuff has been covered over at Grindthieves, and even more I've just kind of kept to myself or shared with only a handful of people. Nevertheless, let me just reiterate how amazed I am at the quantity of quality music coming from the Twin Cities. Everything from hip hop to trap to drum'n'bass to dubstep to techno to noise to black metal to doom metal and beyond.

Bellow is a blackened funeral doom band hailing from Minneapolis, which I discovered not through my connections to or roots still in my home town but via the always incredible Terminal Escape blog. If you're not already a regular reader and fan of Terminal Escape, bookmark the shit and fix that problem. Anyhow, consisting of 6 members and formerly known as Toil, Bellow offer up a free 3 track EP of slow and brooding doom metal with a blackened kiss of fuzz and keyboards/piano throughout. Emotional - depressing at times, hopeful at others - the mood herein is heavy like dense fog while the musicianship is painfully slow and painstakingly meticulous. Bittersweet and melancholic dirges to conjure demons with or make babies to.

The Un-Zen - The ultimate Violatör

Photobucket

The Un-zen is a side project of the awesome The Captain Kirk on LSD Experience. The Un-zen shares some similarities with TCKOLE but contains enough differences to make it stand out as its own project. Far darker and lacking in the many ravey and chiptune sounds that TCKOLE is very much defined by. The tracks are shorter most just under two minutes, giving it a very punk rock feel, which is punctuated by the driving few note synths/leads. Even the vocals feel more aggressive in their own throat wrenching way. Chug a few shitty beers and mosh in your bedroom!

Karcavul - "Rawctaver"

Necro doom extreme. That's pretty accurate. Pummeling and suffocating, France's Karcavul deliver four tracks of ritualistic brutality with their EP "Rawctaver". Grimy sludge covered doom from the darkest recesses of heavy metal music, hinting at black metal sometimes and death metal others. Just disgusting and invasive in every way, you'll be trying to scrub this one out of you in the shower for the next month. Pick up a lmited edition tape or CD for just 5€, or grab the download for free.

Dead Rooster - "Witches Of Belial"

Painfully slow and methodically dirgey, Buenos Aires' Dead Rooster deliver a 4 track EP of smoked out death doom for free that you should probably hear. Lethargic crawling walls of guitar riffs, deliberate and plodding drums, and you know the vocalist is mouth to the sky vomiting blood.

Mystification - "Mystification"

I heard a little Mystification in the latter 90s somewhere, probably at this little hole in the wall record store by where I grew up, I don't recall for certain though. I dug it quite a bit. They basically didn't do a whole lot besides a couple demos in the early 90s, from what I can tell. Which is too bad, because as far as a good dose of straight up heavy fuckin' uncut god damned doom metal, it really doesn't get a whole lot better. No bullshit, no meandering, no posturing, just upfront doom like it's meant to be done.

Now, in 2012, some 20 years, give or take, since they came about and then fizzled away, the ever incredible  Torn Flesh Records netlabel, often featured here on Magicore, delivers a fat slab of Mystification that's otherwise unpublished. So, throw up the horns and down load the shit!

Embers - Shadows

Photobucket Yet another release from Torn Flesh Records. Yet again, its fantastic.

From the review on Valley of Steel:

"One of the main distinctions concerns Jerry Buchanan‘s drum parts. Whereas black metal is normally characterized by sterile, mechanical-sounding drumming — non-stop blastbeats drenched in reverb and oversaturated with the piercing clash of trebly cymbals ringing — what we have here feels quite free and organic. While reverb is still used here, it seems to be for a totally different purpose: instead of creating a feeling of extreme solitude, smothering in its expansiveness, the tone I am getting is one of openness, where the sounds are all given ample room to breathe. Likewise, the playing style seems free and loose — while still fitting perfectly into the context of a metal band, the feeling it gives me is sometimes closer to, say, John Bonham‘s jazzy explorations across the drum kit, than the incessant driving, pounding noise inherent in many black metal recordings."

Hvíldarlauss Dauðr - "Through The Corpse Door"

Easily the most deceptive album cover in a hot minute. No, no this is not some chin stroking minimal tech house post bass disenfranchised future club retro pop. This is some black metal. If anything, it's a sort of epic/doom variety of post black metal. But, I mean, for real, fuck hyprefractioning, this is just some good fucking black metal. Any variety or type of black metal listener will easily enjoy this. Only just far reaching enough, just a hair away from being textbook.

Law Of The Tongue - "Law Of The Tongue"

Hittin' you again with some more Torn Flesh Records material! Seriously, they've got so much great stuff, making it hard to keep up and decide what to share - also keepin' me from checkin' out metal material that's not on their label, ha!

This time around it's the self titled mammoth that is Law Of The Tongue with some six ton unapologetic stoner & doom varieties of truly rockin' heavy fuckin' metal. Toss in some southern/sludge tendencies and you're good to go with this one. Riffage layered upon riffage covered in bluesy jazzy metal drums topped off with a perfect growl and alternating scream vocal delivery. Sick cover art and brutal name, once more from the Torn Flesh camp. Heavy.
