Merenneitona - Mermaiding

Konserttisarja jatkuu. Kesän viimeinen pukuteemainen konsertti johon osallistuin, oli Täydenkuun vesi-iltamat. Mietin pitkään menenkö vai en, ja kun selvisi että konsertti on samana päivänä kuin paikalliset festarit, joihin olin jo ostanut lipun, päätin että en mene. Mutta kuinkas sitten kävikään. Kirppiksillä alkoi tulla vastaan niin paljon merenneitoasuun sopivaa materiaalia, että oli aivan pakko alkaa suunnittelemaan ja tekemään merenneitopukua. Ja kruunun tein tietenkin simpukoista ja helmistä, pitäähän merenneidolla sellainen olla. Konsertin järjestäjien kanssa sovittiin, että olen eräänlaisena elävänä lavasteena siellä, ja minulle laitettiin riippuva rottinkituoli valtaistuimeksi. Pienen tanssiesityksenkin pääsin sitten ex tempore tekemään konsertin erään kappaleen aikana... huh, jännittävää. Ilmojen haltija oli huomannut konsertin teeman, ja vettä tuli taivaan täydeltä, ja Myrskyluodon Maijaa säesti ukkonen erikoistehosteena, mutta ei se tahtia haitannut, esiintyjät ottivat tilanteen haltuunsa täydellisesti. Oli kyllä hauskaa, upeat laulut ja runot, ja ensimmäinen kerta merenneitona oli mieleenpainuva kokemus. Ja sitten pikavauhtia suomut ja vahva meikki pois naamasta, vähän normaalimpaa vaatetta päälle, ja festareille kuuntelemaan Olavi Uusivirtaa loppuillaksi.

Consert theme goes on. The last costumed consert I attended was Full moon water concert. I hesitated if I should go and dress-up or not, and when I realizsed it was the same day as a rock festival I had already bought tickets, I decided not to go. But what happened is a different story. I saw all kinds of fun material suitable for a mermaid outfit in trift stores, so I just had to start planning and making a mermaid costume. I made also a crown from shells and pearls, of course a mermaid has to wear a crown. We made a plan with the concert organizers, that I would be a kind of living prop, and they arranged a hanging throne for me. I also danced a bit to one of the songs, oh that was so exciting. The holder of the skies had seen that it was water themed concert, so although it was beautiful and sunny before the concert, it rained heavily during the event, and thunder and lightning made spot on special effects for some of the songs. I had so much fun, it was unforgettable experience to be a mermaid for the first time. After the concert I quickly took the scales and weird make-up off my face, changed to normal clothes and run for the rock concert for the rest of the evening.

Downton Abbeyssa... vai Ropolassa? - In Downton Abbey... or Ropola?

Olen ahkera kirpputorien kiertäjä, ja eräällä kirppiskierroksella silmiini osui ohut turkoosi kukallinen ja kultalangoin kirjottu ihastuttava bolero. Ja sen vierestä saman sarjan mekko, voi miten ihanaa kangasta! Näin heti mielessäni jotain 1910-luvulle sijoittuvaa, itämaisuus oli silloin muotia... oli pakko käydä sovituskopissa kokeilemassa. Mutta voi harmi, mekko oli liian tiukka, en saanut vetoketjua kiinni. Ostin ne kuitenkin, hinta oli naurettavan halpa, muutaman euron, ja ajattelin, että pystyn ehkä tekemään mekolle jotain. Ja eipä mennyt kuin hetki, samalta kirppikseltä löytyi vanhan oloinen väreihin sopiva vihreä huivi, ja seuraavalta kirppikseltä saman värinen pitkä vihreä mekko... ja seuraavalta orkidearintaneula. Seuraavan Eino Leino -kartanokonsertin asun tarvikkeet löysivät tiensä minulle kuin itsekseen, kuin tarkoitettuna. Minulla oli jo ennestään riikinkukkoviuhka -täydellinen. Ja hiuksiin nauhaa, ja tyyliin sopivat kengätkin. Aivan pakko oli alkaa koota konserttiasua.

Mutta se mekko, tiukka kuin mikä. Onneksi bolero oli juuri sopiva. Kavensin mekon helmaa, ja yli jääneen palan helmasta jäi ornamenttinauhaa, josta ompelin levennyksen mekon yläosaan taakse vetoketjun molemmin puolin. Bolero peittää levennyksen, ja muutenkin se onnistui niin hyvin, että voisi kuulua pukuun alun perinkin. Ostin turkoosia hapsunauhaa, jonka ompelin mekon helmaan, ja alle kiinnitin vihreän mekon helmaosan. Niinestä tehdyn makrameekäsilaukun löysin eräältä rompe/antiikkitorilta, vaihdoin siihen oranssin vuorin tilalle turkoosin, ja ompelin koristeeksi paljetteja. Pitkiä käsineitä, jotka tuollaiseen pukuun kuuluisivat, en ehtinyt hankkia, mutta nyt minulla on jo nekin seuraavaa käyttöä ajatellen. Aion myös ommella jossain vaiheessa juuri oikeanlaisen korsetin, vaikka tämäntapaisten pukujen alta korsetin muoto ei onneksi hirveästi erotu, entinen korsetti kävi hyvin. Täydellisen kaulakorun sain ystävältäni, ja korvakorut tein korutarvikevarastoni aarteista. Tyttäreni teki minulle konserttiin muhkean kiharanutturan, jonka koristeeksi laitettiin kultanauhaa ja riikinkukon sulkia sekä orkidearintaneula. Hän alkaa olla todella taitava kampausten tekijä, eikö vaan. Olen erittäin tyytyväinen lopputulokseen, puku on mielestäni todella kaunis! Tykkään todella paljon juuri tuon aikakauden tyylistä, Downton Abbey onkin lempisarjani. 

Kyllä täytyy taas kehua konserttia. Eino Leinon runoja laulaen ja lausuen, ihanassa Korholan kartanossa historian henkäillessä ympärillä. Kyllä meidän kelpaa, kun on niin hienoja esiintyjiä, ja upeita konserttiympäristöjä pienellä kylällämme. Aivan mahtavaa. 

Toivottavasti ette kyllästy... pukuleikit jatkuu vielä. Haluan vain näyttää teillekin, koska minulla on ollut niin hauskaa! Kommentteja olisi hauskaa saada, miltä näyttää ja kiinnostaako ollenkaan? Mutta seuraavana jotain aivan totaalisen erilaista!

I go frequently to trift shops, and once again when going throug some shops, I saw a beautiful turguoise light floral bolero, embroidered with gold yarns. And a matching dress right beside it, oh how lovely fabrics and colours! Immediately I saw 1910's style in them, orientalism was in fashion, and these clothes indeed had oriental vibe in them. So I just had to try them on. But oh no, the dress was too tight, I couldn't close the zipper! I bought them anyway, the price was ridiculously cheap, and I tought I could make something from them. And right after that I found a green fringed scarf in matching green. And a long green dress from the next trift shop... and an orchid brooch from the next one. So the pieces for the next manor concert came to me like they were meant to be. I already had a perfect peacock fan, and suitable shoes too.

But the dress was just so tight. Luckily it was too wide at the hem, so I cut off parts from the sides, and used them to widen the bodice from the back. No one could see it since it is under the bolero. And even if seen, it matches really well, it could be fooled as original design. I bought some turquoise fringe, and added it to the hem, and attached the long green skirt under the dress. I found the purse in an antique market, I just replaced the original orange lining with a turguoise lining, and added some sequins. I didn't have time to find any long opera gloves that should go with this kind of dress, but now I have them too for the next time I wear the dress. I am also planning to sew the proper 1910's corset for this, althought this corset was fine too, the dress doesn't show the body form a lot. I got the perfect necklace from my friend, and I made the earrings myself. My daughter made me the puffy and curly back bum, she is so good with hair isn't she. I am so very happy with the outcome of the whole attire, I think it is really beautiful! I really like the style of this era, Downton Abbey is one of my favourite series, of course.

I have to praise the concert once again. Beautiful poetry from Eino Leino, with words, and singing, in the lovely Korhola manor, with sounds of history around us. So great to have so awesome performers and concert surroundings in our little village. So lovely.

I hope you are not fed up with my costume play... this goes on still for a while. I just want to show you too, because I have had so much fun with these. I would also love some comments, what do you think? But next one will be something totally different!

Turnyyripuku #1 - Bustle dress #1

Kartanokonsertit jatkuu... seuraavan kartanokonsertin teema oli Suomielokuvan sävelin... niin että mitäs ihmettä sinne ylle? Pukeutuako elokuvien tekoaikaan vaikkapa 1940-luvun tyyliin, vai jonkin elokuvan hahmoon kauemmas menneisyyteen. Sain eräänä iltana älynväläyksen, miten eräästä kellohelmaisesta pitkästä  juhlamekostani saisi helposti tehtyä turnyyrimekon. Ja koska koska halusin toteuttaa ideani, ja tulossa oli elokuvakonsertin jälkeen Eino-Leino -konsertti, johon turnyyriaika ei sopisi, päätin ottaa pukeutumistyylikseni Kulkurin valssi -elokuvan ajan. Sehän sijoittuu 1880-luvulle, eli turnyyri sopi hyvin.

Ihan ensiksi tilasin halvan korsetin, koska korsetti oli erittäin tärkeä alusvaate aina 1910-luvulle saakka. Se muotoili vartaloa kunkin aikakauden ihanteiden mukaan, ja antoi puvuille sileän pohjan. Ja sitä paitsi violetti mekkoni oli hiukan hm. tiukka. Korsetti ei ollut aivan oikean muotoinen aikakauteensa, mutta sai kelvata. Ompelin turnyyritakamusta varten kankaasta vanulla täytetyn turnyyripussukan, jonka sidoin vyötärölle. Sen päälle laitoin pitkän ruskean tafti/samettihameen, ja sen ylle violetin juhlamekon, josta keräsin parilla kiinni ommellulla nauhalla helmat takaa ylös. Materiaalivarastossani oli sopivan värinen mummoni vanha juhlamekko osin purettuna, ja siitä käytin kauluksen ja miehustan, ja ompelin kalvosimet, sekä taakse lisämuhkeutta turnyyrin päälle. Hatuksi pihistin koristenukelta hatun, jota muotoilin ja maalasin mustaksi, ja koristelin tekokukin ja riikinkukon sulin. Musta sateenvarjo löytyi omasta takaa, ja pussukka löytyi kirppikseltä eurolla. Sitäkin vähän tuunasin, vaihdoin vetoketjukiinnityksen tilalle metallikehyksen, joka sekin löytyi omista varastoista. Rintaneula ja korvakorut vielä ajan henkeen. Tyttäreni teki minulle taas kampauksen, ja siihen käytettiin hiuslisäkkeeksi omia hiuksiani. Olin leikannut pitkät hiukset joskus 15 vuotta sitten, ja tein talteen otetusta letistä hiuslisäkkeitä. 

Konsertti oli tällä kertaa komeassa Karjalan kartanossa, ja saimme nauttia hienosta elokuvamusiikista kartanon hienossa salissa. Myös esiintyjät olivat pukeutuneet, yhdellä laulajista, Miljalla, oli yllään minun loistavanpunainen vanhojenpukuni, jonka tein rokokoo-ajan henkeen aika kauan aikaa sitten. Hänhän oli tietenkin Ansa Ikonen kummitustanssiasussaan Kulkurin valssi -elokuvasta.

Tähän turnyyripukuun pukeuduin vielä aivan toisenlaisessa tapahtumassa, ja siihen muokkasin pukua huomattavasti ajanmukaisemmaksi. Mutta siihen palaan myöhemmin, kartanokonserttien sarja jatkuu vielä.

The theme for the next manor consert was "Finnish movie melodies"... so I wondered, what on earth to wear this time? Perhaps style from the golden era of the Finnish movies in 40's or 50's, or perhaps a charachter from a movie. One night I got this great idea, that one of my modern dresses could be easily modified to a bustle dress. A famous movie Vagabond's Waltz was placed in the 1880's so decided to go with the bustle.

First I had to buy a corset, because as the foundation garment, corset was absolutely necessary hundreds of years all the way to 1910's. Every woman wore a corset. It created the fashionable body silhuette for the each era, and made smooth foundation for the dress to sit on. I bought a cheap corset, which wasn't quite perfet, but had to do for now. I sewed a simple bustle bag that I stuffed with polyfill. Then I put a long brown taffeta/velvet skirt over the bustle pad, and the lilac dress on top. I gathered the back of the dress up over the bustle with some ribbons and little stitching. I had my grandmother's old dress (partly already taken apart) in my stash, and I used it's collar and buttons, and sewed also cuffs and some decoration on the bustle. The hat was made from a doll's straw hat that I painted black and decorated with artificial flowers and peacock feathers. A black umbrella with a nice little beaded velvet bag, and jewelry completed the style. My daugher made the hairdo again. Part of the hair on the back is indeed my own, but it is from a plaid that was cut long time ago, we used the hair as an extra hairpiece.

The concert was in the splendid Karjala manor, and we enjoyed the perfect atmosphere and lovely movie songs. The performers had also costumes, one of the singers was wearing my 18th century style costume, that I had made 27 years ago. She was playing a character from a movie, and the costume was perfect for it.

I wore this bustle dress again in another event, and I changed it much more historically accurate, as much I could with that modern dress. But I will get back to that later, the series of the manor conserts goes on.

Jossain 1910-luvulla - Some time in the 1910's

Yhteislaulutilaisuuksien jälkeen alkoi kartanokonserttien sarja. Ensimmäinen konsertti, "Merikannon matkassa", oli kauniissa Ropolan kartanossa Rautalammilla. Konsertin ohjelmisto oli Merikantoa, Eino Leinoa, Kuulaa ja Sibeliusta. Kerrassaan upeaa, nautin todella paljon Rajalliset-musikanttiryhmän esityksistä, sävelet ja laulut saivat aikaan monia kylmiä väreitä ja jopa kyyneleitä. Eikä ympäristökään ollut hullumpi, Ropolan päärakennus on yksityiskäytössä, eikä sinne yleensä pääse ulkopuoliset. Nyt oli yläkerran komea sali täynnä tuoleja ja seiniltä katselivat monen sukupolven muotokuvat.

Taas oli käynyt kutsu pukeutua aikakauden tyyliin. Mietin pääni puhki miten saisin helposti koottua jotain viime vuosisadan alkuun sopivaa, ja vaatekaapistani löytyikin pitkä hame ja empirelinjainen tunika. Kas siinäpä 1910-luvun tyyliä, ja kun tyttäreni vielä teki muhkean "Gibson girl" -kampauksen, se täydensi tyylin juuri sopivaksi. Ennen konserttia pääsimme kierrokselle kartanon puutarjhaan, ja samalla saimme kuulla paljon kartanon historiasta. Uppoutuminen historiaan, pukeutuminen ajan henkeen, ja hieno kartanon sali yhdessä upean musiikin kanssa tekivät konsertista unohtumattoman kokemuksen.

Seuraavan konsertin asu olikin sitten jo vähän enemmän tuunattu, koska nälkä kasvaa syödessä... siitä seuraavassa postauksessa.

After sing-along events started the series of conserts in the local manors. The first concert "With Merikanto", was in the beautiful Ropola manor in Rautalampi. The concert repertoire concisted of music from Oskar Merikanto, Eino Leino, Toivo Kuula and Jean Sibelius. They all lived and made music in the change of 19th and 20th century. It was truly amazing, I really enjoyed the concert by the group Rajalliset, I got shivers and even shed some tears. The surroundings were very appropriate. The Ropola main house is in private use, they don't usually allow people in. Now the upstairs beautiful great hall was full of chairs, and the ancecstors looking from the paintings on the walls.

Again the audience was suggested to wear styles of the era. I wondered a lot how to dress and what I would easily get together to wear. I found a long skirt and empire-cut tunic in my wardrobe. There, 1910's style. My daughter made me a puffy Gibson girl hairdo, and it was perfect with the style. Before the concert we got to stroll around the garden, hearing a lot of the manor's history. It all combined together; the history, the old fashioned outfit, and the great hall with magnificent music made the concert unforgettable experience.

For the next concert I made a bit more effort for the dress, because the appetite grows while eating... I will tell and show more in the next post. 

Vintagetyyleissä - In vintage styles

Lähiseudulla järjestettiin viime kesänä monta ihanaa musiikillista tapahtumaa Sisä-Savon Sävelien toimesta. Ensimmäisenä oli yhteislaulutilaisuuksia eri vuosikymmenten lauluin alkukesällä. Muusikot heittivät ilmaan ajatuksen, että yleisökin voisi pukeutua kyseisten vuosikymmenten tyyliin, ja minähän innostuin! Ensin oli 70-luvun laulut, johon etsin ylleni hippilookiin menevää tyyliä 70-luvun alun henkeen. Leveälahkeiset farkut, kukkapaita bling blingillä, äidin mokkanahkaliivi 70-luvulta, punaiset läskipohjakengät vihrein sukin, paljon koruja, ja hiukset auki ja nahkainen otsanauha. Seuraavassa tapahtumassa lauleltiin 50-ja 60-luvun lauluja, johon lainasin tyttäreltäni ihanan kellohelmaisen kukkamekon tyllihameineen, sen seuraksi tiukka villatakki solmulle ja tein otsarullakampauksen. Se ei ihan onnistunut -harjoituksen puutetta -mutta kelpasi. Ja bakeliittikorut. Voi miten oli hauskaa! Myös esiintyjät olivat pukeutuneet ajanmukaisesti -tietenkin.

Last summer we had many great music events by Sisä-Savon Sävelet. First a few vintage singing events nearby, and the performers wished that the audience would also dress up in the decade's styles. I was thrilled! First 70's songs, I searched some hippie and early 70's style clothes: flared jeans, sheer flower top, my mum's suede vest from the 70's, red platform shoes with green socks, lots of jewelry, and straight hair with leatherband. And then 50's and 60's songs in the next event. I borrowed my daughter's lovely full circle dress with fluffy tulle pettocoat, red cardigan tied in front, and victory rolls (that wasn't a success but had to do) on my hair, and bakelite jewelry. Oh I had so much fun! Also the performers were in the decades styles, of course.

No voi hyvänen aika. Olen päivittänyt blogia viimeksi... jouluna. Hyi minua. Onkohan siellä enää ketään? Nyt täytyy vähän miettiä, että mistähän sitä jatkaisi. Sitä odotellessa, laitan tällaisen kuvan. Kesä on mennyt pukuleikkejä leikkiessä erilaisissa tapahtumissa, niistä tulee myöhemmin lisää juttua ja kuvia. :)

Oh my gosh. I have updated my blog last time... in Christmas! Wow. Shame on me. Is anybody still there? Now I have to think a bit how to start again... In the mean time, I'll show this pic. The summer went by playing with costumes in several events, I will tell and show more about them later. :)

Vanha tanssiaispuku - Old ballgown

Huhhuh, on pitänyt kiirettä ja ollut aikalailla stressaavaa elämäni viime aikoina, mutta täällä ollaan. Mitään uutta ei ole syntynyt, ja työhuonekin mahdoton kaaos... Ehkä elämä tästä vielä joskus muuttuu taas sellaiseksi, että taidekin saa sijaa päivissäni. Voi kun niin kaipaan sitä! Opetan yläkoulussa tekstiilitöitä (ja vähän muutakin) koko kevään, ja onhan se aikamoista vaihtelua entiseen. Teinit osaavat olla haastavia!

Tämä viikko oli kyllä aika mukava, meillä oli teemaviikko ja joka päivälle pukeuduttiin eri teeman mukaan... yhtenä päivänä pukeuduin vaaaanhaan vanhojentanssipukuuni, ja olihan se aika jännittävää liihotella pitkin koulun käytäviä parin-kolmensadan teinin pällisteltävänä vadelmanpunaisessa rokokoopuvussani. Tein puvun aikanaan itse, ja vaikka rokokoopuku oli yleensä vaalea, halusin omasta vanhojenpuvustani värikkään. Meillä oli taidelukion vanhojentansseissa aikakausikavalkadi, joten pukuja oli esihistoriasta ja keskiajasta rokokoon ja kertaustyylien kautta viiskytluvulle. Voi niitä aikoja, ihan tuli ikävä... ensin tuohon pukuun pukeutuessani, ja tänään kun olin luokan kanssa lukiolaisten upeita pukuja ja tansseja katsomassa. Ihan siinä itsekin nuortui reilut parikymmentä vuotta.

Woah, I have been so busy and my life has been quite stressful lately. I haven't been creating anything new, and even my study is a huge mess... Perhaps my life will change some day soon so that I could make some art again. I so need and long for that! I am teaching sewing and needlework in junior high school till the end of May, and oh it is a big change in my life... The teenagers are quite a challenge! 

But this week was fun! We had a costume theme week, with a different theme for each day. The pupils and teachers dressed according the given themes. One day I dressed in my old senior high school prom Georgian ballgown, and it was so exciting to flow along the school corridors in front of a couple of hundreds of teenagers to see... oh my. I made the dress myself back then for the prom show, and although Georgian dresses were usually light coloured, I wanted mine to be bright and glorious. We had all sorts of dresses introducing different fashion style periods from ancient history and middle-ages through Georgian and Edwardian styles all the way to flapper and fifties. Oh those days, I miss them! We were watching the senior high school prom show today with my pupils, and the old times just flew back to my mind. I suddenly felt like those 20-and-some years younger.

(Perhaps I need to explain a bit about Finnish senior high school (= upper secondary school) prom tradition. The third class students leave the school to read and prepare for the final exams, and then the next day the second year students become seniors and they have a "ball of the new seniors" where they give a few shows for other students, schools and parents, dancing old ballroom and salon dances like polonaise, cicapo, wienerwalz, pompadour, virginia reel... They usually have really elaborate and beautiful ballgowns. Our school was art school so we made it a bit differently with the period themes.)
