More nail painting fun

My sister-in-law came to visit and we painted our nails.

She used Deborah Lippmann Across the Universe over a coat of Orly La Playa.
I used Sally Hansen Hidden Treasure over Finger Paints Icy Iris.

And all together now!

And now for your standard ending...

Random layering experiment

So I was bored one day and decided to layer...

This is Man Glaze Hot Mess layered over Finger Paints Blissfully Blue. I like it, even if it is a bit wintry looking for August!

Random Picspam!

So, I'm way, WAY behind on both pictures and untried nail polishes. Good lord, these things (both of them) seem to just multiply... for no reason. My next sentence was going to be "We hit Ulta today, and..." Oops. I guess I just found my reason.

Anywho, most of the pictures I've yet to post can at least loosely be grouped together into semi-coherent posts. Today's post is the random stuff that doesn't fit anywhere else, and it's just been sitting in my Flickr for ages and ages, begging to be posted.

Picspam!

Here is Essie Turquoise and Caicos. I know I used this in a comparison post, but I'd never done a full mani of it. You know... I think Essie, as a brand, is growing on me. I don't hate it as much as I once did, anyway. I really, REALLY liked this color. I think I used three coats, since it's a jelly and a little on the sheer side.
032

This is Borghese Principessa Ivory. I was still on the hunt for the perfect off-white polish. This one was 75% off at CVS, and I figured I'd give it a shot for $2, ya know? It was streaky as hell, and I think this was like four coats. Must have been why it was on clearance.
029

This is Sally Hansen HD in Byte. It was okay. Didn't hate it, didn't love it. Pretty sure this was three coats, since it was pretty sheer.
014

I liked this one! It's a Finger Paints color - Art Appreciation Apricot. I got it on clearance at Sally. It really was a nice orange-y shade (I never used to wear oranges or corals, but they're growing on me). I have no idea why I didn't take a picture of the polish by itself before slapping some Hidden Treasure on top, but I didn't. Anyway, I call these... nails... OF FIYAH!

Green, Blue, and Purple comparisons

So I woke up early this morning and sat in bed with a glass of mango iced tea, watching Saved By The Bell and then Zoolander and doing nail polish comparisons. It's nice to be a lady of leisure. :)

Anyway, there are colors in the OPI Shrek minis and in the Essie Resort Collection minis that reminded me a lot of other colors I already had, so I decided to do some comparisons. Unfortunately, it's super cloudy today, but I think I got some decent pictures.

First up, the greens... well, blue-greens. Turquoises, if you will. Pardon the bottle shots, they were all taken on my bed. :)
016
From left to right: Essie Turquoise & Caicos, China Glaze For Audrey, Orly Gumdrop, Revlon Minted, Essie Mint Candy Apple

The polishes are on my fingers in the same order, from thumb to pinky.
021
The greenest ones are Turquoise & Caicos and Minted.
I still say Gumdrop and For Audrey are dupes, or at least near dupes. For Audrey may be a TINY bit bluer.
Turquoise & Caicos is actually a jelly. I thought it was a creme til I put it on. Nope, it's a jelly. It's also three coats. Minted is also three coats.
Gumdrop was opaque in one coat.
The rest of the colors are all two coats.

Now on to the blues!
017
From left to right: Orly Snowcone, Essie Lapis of Luxury, L'Oreal High Tide, Finger Paints Blissfully Blue, OPI What's With the Cattitude.

The polishes are in the same order on my fingers, from thumb to pinky.
025
Snowcone was opaque in one coat.
Lapis of Luxury is another jelly, another three-coater, and I think it may be a jelly dupe for Snowcone, which is a creme.
High Tide is completely different from the rest of them.
Blissfully Blue and What's With the Cattitude are similar, but not dupes. Blissfully Blue is way more stark, while WWTC is a deeper blue. Blissfully Blue was opaque in two coats, while WWTC took three coats.
Here's Snowcone on my thumb and Lapis of Luxury on my pointer. They are SUPER close.
029

And now for the purples!
018
From left to right: Essie Lilacism, China Glaze Light as Air, OPI Rumple's Wiggin.

On my hand, they are in this order:
Pointer - Rumple's Wiggin
Middle - Light as Air
Ring - Lilacism
Pinky - Rumple's Wiggin
032
Light as Air was opaque in one coat.
Lilacism took three coats. Rumple's Wiggin took two coats.
Light as Air is considerably lighter and grayer than the other two. To my eye, Lilacism and Rumple's Wiggin are absolutely dupes. There may be a tiny difference between the two, but you'd have to really be looking for it to see it.

So there! I hope this is informative and helpful. Now back to Zoolander. :)

Three little polishes

So here are some of my new polishes. I really have ended up with a buttload (buttload should be a scientific unit of measurement) of untried polishes lately. I even have 8 mini Essies to try, even though I HATE Essies (generally, but not always). I found a four-pack of minis for $5 at Ulta from Essie's Fall 09 collection, and JJ bought me the four-pack of minis from their new Resort Collection. That man has to love me if he's buying me more nail polish. I know he thinks my collection is a bit ridiculous now, but he bought it for me anyway. Aww. :)

You know what else is ridiculous? My collection of shower gels and lotions. I have no idea why I buy so many. Even if I bought no more shower gel or lotion, I probably have enough to keep myself clean and moisturized until at least 2015. Hoarder much? Actually, it's more like I shop at Bath and Body Works twice a year -- during the semi-annual sales -- and stock WAY up then.

So anyway. Swatches!

First up is Zoya Alegra. This is pretty, sparkly, and foily, just like Charla and Mimi were. I like this dark, reddish shade of pink on me.
001

I kept reading about this color on a bunch of different blogs, and it was one of the main reasons I even stopped in at Ulta. The brand is LA Splash, which I'd never heard of before. I did see a LA Splash display in a Walgreen's recently, but it was all eyeliner and no nail polish. Maybe it'll be available at Walgreen's soon. This shade is called Golden Seahorse, and it's a seafoam green with gold glitter in it. It's really a unique color, but I'm not sure it's for me.
007

And this was my, "I'm bored and I found Hidden Treasure" mani. This is actually a base of Finger Paints "Tough Art to Follow," which I THINK is one of their new shades. It's a really dark olive green. I thought it'd be more forest green, but definitely has more yellow tones than blue, so I say it's dark olive. I was underwhelmed by this color. I didn't even take a picture of it by itself. So here it is with Hidden Treasure over it. Heh.
008

And there you go. I'm slowly whittling down my backlog of photos. :)

What a crazy week!!

I have been so busy this week, I haven't had time to do anything with this blog. And the thing is, looking back on the week, I have no idea what took up all my time. It just seems like I've been going, going, going!

First, I have mailed out five packages from my destashing post. It is now updated and current, as far as what I have left. Please go check it out here: http://lissasnails.blogspot.com/2010/04/destashing.html

Secondly, I am keeping an Excel spreadsheet of all the entries in my giveaway. I've discovered some new blogs this way -- it's pretty cool! If you haven't entered, go here:
http://lissasnails.blogspot.com/2010/04/giveaway.html

THIRD, I ordered some stuff from Urban Decay's Friends-and-Family 30% off sale. If you haven't shopped it yet, it ends Monday. Use code 1SFNF. I ordered a couple of things that were on clearance. Clearance + 30% off = dirt cheap. I got the Apocalyptic nail kit (of course), which appears to be gone now. I also got the Hall of Fame set. I'm debating placing another order to get their new nail set, but I'm not sold on the colors in it. Maybe I'll just wait til it goes on clearance... :D

Anywho, now that all that's been said... I actually do have some pictures to post. Oh yeah, and I chopped my nails off. After trying to get them to be long and pointy, I decided that I actually hate the way that looks, and shorter and squarer is just easier to deal with. So now they're just barely past my fingertips -- you'll see in the following pictures. :)

First of all, remember how I said I got that black glitter set at Icing for $5? I actually hate these polishes. The first coat is super sheer. The second coat drags and leaves bald spots. The third coat has to be really thick in order to cover up the mayhem left by the first and second coats. Then you have to deal with glitter removal, which I'm starting to really hate. Like, it's not even worth it to me to wear glitters because I hate removing them so much. Even with the cotton balls+tin foil trick, it's just a pain.

So I only ever wore three of these. Maybe I'll wear the other two one day, but I'm going to go ahead and post what I've got because I have a feeling that'll be a long time from now, if ever.
043

First up is the purple glitter, which I immediately gouged the hell out of by removing a power supply from a computer at work. This one is really pretty.
002

Then I wore... yellow? I guess? Or is that gold? Or a very light lime-green? It's sort of an ambiguous color.
001

Then blue, which I actually really liked, too.
013

The two remaining ones are orange and green (teal?), and yeah. Maybe one day. But not today.

This is China Glaze Strawberry Fields. I saw this on someone (a blogger, not IRL) recently and realized I had to have this polish! I couldn't seem to get a decent picture of it, but it's really pretty. I approve. I really like the tiny gold glass-flecks in it -- it makes it a very unique pink, in my opinion.
005

This was another of the Butter London polishes I got. It's called Teddy Boy, and it's a brownish-pinkish-mauvish color. I really liked this. However, those bottles suck. I found the application to be really difficult because of the way the cap is shaped. Then I read somewhere that they've changed their bottles (and obviously, the ones I got so dirt cheap were the old bottles... dammit). Maybe one day when I feel like shelling out too much money for nail polish, I'll try some of the newer ones. I just don't really like the idea of paying more than $10 or so for a bottle of polish. I've done it, but it's very rare for me. I am lemming Chanel's Illusion D'Or right now, though, and that's WAY more than I care to spend on polish, ever.
013

This was a polish I picked up at Sally's. It's Finger Paints "Magenta Mood." It's a pretty, foil-y, glitter-y magenta. Actually, it seemed to go back and forth between bright red and magenta. In certain lights, it looked magenta. In others, red.
015

I decided to do some fauxnading last weekend, and did this using China Glaze Light as Air for the base, and China Glaze Grape Pop for the stamping. I used a fauxnad plate that doesn't have a plate number, but these were just flowery. This is the last manicure I did before I chopped my nails off.
024

This was the first mani I did after chopping my nails off. This is China Glaze Grape Pop with Colorama Sonic Sunset (holy crap, I am loving the Colorama flakies!) on top. Later this day, I got my Urban Decay order in the mail, so I have only been wearing those colors since then. :)

Comparisons and blues

So, I've had a few polishes in mind that I'd wanted to do comparisons of. I finally got around to swatching them last weekend, and I guess I'll finally get around to posting the pictures this weekend. ;)

In other (but somewhat -- you'll see in a minute -- related) news, have y'all seen the new Finger Paints display at Sally's? It's like four blue shades with a sheer iridescent topcoat and a silver... topcoat? foil? I can't quite tell and didn't want to buy it to find out. But the blues are LOVELY. I bought two of them.

The first is a pastel creme, called Blissfully Blue:
001

The second is a medium blue shimmer, called Add and Abstract... or is this blue? It's really sort of teal. There is some definite green in this and I think it's GORGEOUS.
004

BUT... both of these reminded me of other colors. So now, on to the comparisons.
From left to right: Finger Paints Blissfully Blue, China Glaze For Audrey, Orly Gumdrop, Essie Mint Candy Apple.
012

The nails are in the same order (I have Blissfully Blue on both my thumb and pointer here). As you can see, Gumdrop and For Audrey are the closest. Blissfully Blue is much more, well, BLUE than the others.
018

THEN... Add and Abstract vs. Rimmel Lasting Finish Pro in Marine Blue.
014

I have the Rimmel on my middle finger and pinky, Add and Abstract on my index and ring.
023
Those are really so close you don't need both.

So then I wondered what the difference was between China Glaze Lubu Heels and Milani Garnet Gems.
028

The difference is MINIMAL. I have China Glaze on my index and ring. Milani on my middle and pinky.
039

034
Seriously, you only need one of these. Not both.

And that's it for comparisons today. I have some good news to post here, but probably won't get to it til Sunday. I'm sure you'll all be on pins and needles. :D

Nails of the day and good news

First... I got bored with Icy Iris last night, so I did this to it. I like it. :)
I used my Art Deco nail art pen in silver glitter on the tips, and used a Nailene nail sticker on the ring finger.
001

I got official word today that I'm being promoted at work, so I bought myself something I'd been wanting.
Ohh yeeeah, it's the Urban Decay Alice in Wonderland Book of Shadows. I can't WAIT to play with it. :D

Some randoms

Here are some randoms I've just had lying around. Stuff I picked up for a dollar or two, stuff I've been meaning to try out but just hadn't. So I swatched it all today. Yay!

Wet N' Wild Caribbean Frost. It's a teal frost. It's ok. I think I got this on clearance for 50 cents someplace, so I don't feel bad saying I'll probably never wear this again. It's not a bad color, just way frosty for me.
011

L.A. Colors in Amethyst. This is actually a really nice glittery purple. It's a medium bright purple. I think this was three coats. Please excuse my ring finger, clearly I banged it into something. :D I picked this up at Dollar General one day.
064

Orly Blue Suede. My love of all things matte is fading fast. I do like this a LOT better than OPI Russian Navy Matte, but the OPI mattes were generally crappy anyway. This is a good navy that doesn't look *black*.
018

Pure Ice - Magic. WOW! I've read numerous times that Pure Ice is a great drugstore brand, but I'd never actually bought any of it before. This will be changing. I picked this up on a whim last night and I love it! The formula was great, the color is interesting, and it was only $2! Sweet! I had to take a bunch of pictures of this.
Natural light:
046

With flash:
043

In direct sunlight - OMG THE SPARKLEZ!!!
045

Finger Paints Icy Iris is last.
Holy mother of God, I love this color! It's a dark eggplanty-purple with teeny tiny lighter purple glitter in it. This is actually my current mani. I hope to leave it on til Tuesday... if I have that much patience.
065

And that is all until I get my Claire's pastels swatched. I really am excited to use those, I have no idea why I wanted to get everything else outta the way first. :)

Impromptu Haul

Oh lord, I really didn't mean to come home with all this nail polish. But it was all cheap! And I got my state tax refund today! It's ok, I swear!

So my fiance is very particular about the socks he wears. He specifically wants Gold Toe "over the calf" socks. I discovered yesterday that there is a Gold Toe outlet in the outlet mall not too far from here, and that they were having a buy 3, get 1 free special. So I bought him 4 packs of socks.

Next door to the Gold Toe outlet was a Rue 21. I figured I'd stop in. I found these two polishes. The first one is a mustard yellow -- it apparently was one of those layered polishes, because I discovered the "Do Not Shake" sticker on it once I got home. I guess it was shaken, which is fine by me because I've been wanting a mustard yellow polish for awhile. I also picked up a mint green. Neither of these seem to have names.
038

So then I saw a Claire's and figured I'd drop in. Their cosmetics were all buy 1, get 1 50% off (I really didn't save a whole lot there, though). I'd been lemming the pastel set after seeing it swatched somewhere (too lazy to check where) earlier this week. I picked up the other three because they looked cool. Can you tell I dig blues and greens? Heh.
027

Here are the other three bottles up close. They are Matte Green, Yel, and Dream Catcher:
031

So then I figured I'd drop by Sally on my way home. I had a 15% off coupon, so I picked up these three. I got China Glaze Blue Sparrow, China Glaze Flying Dragon, and Finger Paints Icy Iris (on clearance! for $1.99!).
043

Next door to Sally is a Dollar Tree. So I had to stop in. They had a whole buttload of Sally Hansen that had to have just come in recently, since I go to that Dollar Tree fairly often. All of these were in 2-packs (although a lot of them just had a clear polish as the "other" polish, but still! 2 for a dollar! and I now have a buttload of clear polish!). I got a Star Opal in Red Opal, and two Fire Opals in Royal Opal and Blush Opal.
044

I also got two Lacquer Shines in Lustrous and Glow.
047

I also picked this up at Publix on clearance for $3. My nails are NASTY stained (that's what happens when you wear nail polish all the time, I guess, even though I always use a base coat). I can't wait to try it!
021

And now... I suppose I have my work cut out for me, huh?
