Gravado ao longo de cinco anos num contexto de turbulência pessoal e luto familiar, Begging The Night To Take Hold acolhe uma aguda sensibilidade para a pop de càmara - os belíssimos arranjos para piano, violoncelo, baixo e discreta percussão de Pete Harvey (Modern Studies) e Graeme Smillie - tomada como cenário para reflexões ("Rogues and thieves, you know they masquerade as new ideas, and as the thunder peals the damage done becomes revealed") íntimas, voláteis e fugazes.

Benvindos à aula de composição de Emma Pollock tal como o "Snack Mag" a regista: "Gosto muito daquela escrita de canções que vai dar a lugares completamente inesperados. Adoro as modulações. Adoro quando as tonalidades mudam, mesmo que apenas temporariamente e, depois, regressam ao ponto de partida. É isso que realmente me entusiasma. Os acordes podem fazer muitas coisas estranhas e maravilhosas. O truque é que a melodia que se lhes sobrepõe precisa de os unir de tal forma que pareça que aqueles são os únicos acordes que poderiam existir. Portanto, para mim, a melhor música é aquela que soa inevitável. Adoro o elemento surpresa. Talvez haja um verso que soe bastante previsível, mas, de repente, surge uma reviravolta. E essa reviravolta irá tornar-se a parte favorita dessa música". A fundadora dos defuntos Delgados bem como da independente Chemikal Underground, no momento em que, dez anos após o anterior, publica o 4º álbum a solo, Begging the Night to Take Hold, fala também como uma revolucionária veterana não muito feliz com a revolução.
