Hello blog visitors, Kirsten here.  I have another of the samples I made for the Event Day to show you.

I used a piece of patterned paper from the CWC Time Flies collection & distressed it by spritzing both sides with water, crumpling it up a few times, then drying it a heat tool after I'd smoothed it out slightly.  I used the blade of my scissors to distress the edges, then spritzed with a mix of water & gold mica powder.

I painted the  Wendy Vecchi Art Part watch part with copper acrylic paint & when it was dry applied a brown alcohol ink randomly on top.  Gold alcohol ink was applied to the metal card, which I'd cut with a circle die, then I stamped the butterfly on top with Stazon ink.

The seam binding was coloured with distress stain & dried with the heat tool while it was crumpled up, that leaves lots of creases in it.  A few embellishments & a quote by Indigo Blu, stamped & heat set with clear embossing powder finished the piece.

Distress Stains Background, part two

Hello, happy Thursday, Kirsten here with the continuation of my post from yesterday.  This is where I stopped;

2013-05-05 001 2013-05-05 015

Now I had to decide where the focal images were to go.  The butterfly & dragonfly are Artemio stamps & the sentiment is a Tim Holtz one from my stash – I needed a small stamp & it was the only one that fit.

2013-05-05 001 2013-05-05 016

I stamped the images with black Archival ink & dried with a heat tool.  Then I mixed a little gold mica powder with water in a mister bottle & sprayed it onto the tags from a distance, so that they were covered with a fine mist.  Left it for a few seconds, mopped up the excess, dried with the heat tool & set the tags to one side.

I blended some distress inks on a scrap of linen textured white card, stamped the butterfly & dragonfly with Versamark embossing ink & applied mica powders on top, misting with water to set.

I cut out the wings, edged them with distress inks, shaped them around a pencil to add dimension & attached them to the tags with foam pads.

The final additions were ribbon & some Craftwork Cards card candi.

That’s it.  I hope you’ve enjoyed this mini tutorial & if it has inspired you to make something with distress stains please let us know by posting a link to your project in the comments.

Until next time, happy crafting.

Kirsten

PS Don’t forget, if you make something with butterflies, or something else with wings on it, you can enter this month's blog challenge.

Distress Stain Backgrounds

Hello blog visitors, Kirsten here, happy Wednesday to you all.  My blog post for today has turned out to a mini tutorial that will be completed tomorrow.

I know from talking with the ladies at Lisa’s classes that they haven’t tried using Distress Stains yet, so I thought I’d show you a very simple way to create a background, using them & stamping.
Distress stains are ink-based, fluid dyes, they come in the same range of colours as the distress inks & they're great for adding colour to a porous surface quickly & easily.  I’ve chosen manila tags as my surface today, they’re an ideal size for trying out techniques.

2013-05-05 001 2013-05-05 001

First thing to do is put various colours of the stains on your craft sheet.  Inside the bottle is a valve which you open by pressing the brushed nylon dabber onto the sheet.  If you want more stain gently squeeze the sides of the bottle.

2013-05-05 001 2013-05-05 002

Swipe the tag through the stains.

2013-05-05 001 2013-05-05 004

Dry the tag for a few seconds with your heat tool, then spritz with water.  The stains react with the water & will blend with each other.  Dry thoroughly – you can also mop up the excess stain with a paper towel.

2013-05-05 001 2013-05-05 006

Once dry, you can press the tag into the remaining stain, this will give you a mottled effect, as in the tag on the right.  I used a second tag to mop the rest of the stain, thus the colour is less intense – don’t waste your stains!

As long as you remember to dry each layer, you can add more stain quite a few times.

2013-05-05 001 2013-05-05 009

The next layer to add is distress inks, which are translucent of course, so you’ll get extra colour while still seeing the stains underneath.

2013-05-05 001 2013-05-05 010

Now we’re ready to start stamping.  This is an Artemio stamp.  I didn’t put it on an acrylic block, because I didn’t want a perfectly clear image & I used Coffee Archival ink, that way the image becomes part of the background.   You can see that I applied more pressure when I stamped on to the first tag.

2013-05-05 001 2013-05-05 012

The next layer was a floral stamp from Kanba stamped in opposite corners with black ink.  I also flicked some water onto the darker tag to break up the darker areas.

2013-05-05 001 2013-05-05 013

The final step for the background was to add some solid stamping using black ink.  Unfortunately, none of the stamps I have from Lisa are solid images, so I used these little butterflies & dragonfly stamps from my stash.

Distress Stain Dusky Concord  Distress Stain Shabby Shutters  Distress Stain Rusty Hinge  Distress Stain Tumbled Glass

That's it for today, I hope you’ll come back tomorrow to see how I finished these tags.  Until then, happy crafting.

Kirsten’s Class Samples, part two

Good morning, happy Saturday, Kirsten here with a scheduled post.
There's still too much going on for me to post regularly, so I've had to write a few posts at the same time & they will be published as & when.
Hopefully, 'normal' service will be resumed at some point. I'd like to show you three of my projects for last week's class today.
The first one you might recognise from this post.

I started off by covering the MDF plaque with a piece of Parlor Wall paper from Graphic 45's Olde Curosity Shop collection, which I added splats of Rusty Hinge & Frayed Burlap distress stains to & blended a little Vintage Photo distress ink on top.
The central butterfly was stamped with Versamark & covered with WOW's copper EP & the other butterflies were coloured with Weathered Wood distress ink.
When I'd put the piece together I flicked water over it & very quickly put Fran'tage EP on top, then heat set.  I did the same with the flower.
I needed a very small quote for this & the only suitable one I had was a Tim Holtz stamp from my stash.

This is on an 8x8 card blank.
The patterned paper is layered onto core'dinations card.
The pattern was very subtle, especially after I added distress inks - Vintage Photo, Walnut Stain, Tea Dye - so I stamped the Kanban images with black Archival ink.
The bird & kraft birdcage are Craftwork card, (I stamped onto the cage with black Archival ink & heat set with WOW's Clear Sparkle EP), the bird's wing is the heart-shaped centre of the cage.
The flower is Hobby House & Crafts Too & the ribbon is a scrap from my stash.

This is another 8x8 card.  I put the stencil on top of a piece of linen textured card  & pushed Versamark through it, removed the stencil & put black EP onto the card.
After heat setting & letting it cool, I blended distress inks - Tea Dye, Walnut Stain - on top, leaving it patchy.
The torn, patterned paper is G45; Before Your Time from their Kraft Recollections collection, I blended distress ink over it too.
The piece of paper on the lower corner is just a piece of copy paper, stamped & 'aged' by crumpling & distress inks.
I added lots of metal embellishments to finish, details below.
