Rough Ride & Decorating the log staircase

It was a miracle we made it to the log cabin on Saturday. It is a 3 hour drive to our place and it ended up taking us 5 hours due to the weather, spin outs and standstill traffic. At one point, people were turning around on the freeway and going back up the wrong way ramp! (Okay, I admit, we were one of those people, but I had to go to the bathroom!) But we were determined to make it to the cabin. Of course we had plans to go to a Christmas festival but Greg accidentally drove my car into a ditch. So by the time the tow truck arrived and pulled us out - we only had time left to go grab a meal. Transportation was not in our favor this day.

On to better things, I decorated the log staircase with garland (bought from Garden Ridge - $3.00 per 9 feet) and added ribbons and other decorative Christmas ware. What do you think? (And should I add lights?)

Log Staircase

I had mentioned before that one of the best things I think we purchased for our log home was the log staircases (up to the loft and down to the basement.) The main staircase has become a nice focal point in our home. We had the builder finish and stain the main staircase. To save money, Greg is doing the basement stairs himself. He's been working on lightly sanding the dirt tracks left from the people traffic and is now ready to finish staining. This has been a little hard to do as Marvin the cat keeps wanting to walk on these steps and see what his daddy is doing. Amazingly, the loud noise from the sander doesn't deter him.

Sanded steps ready for staining!

Stairway to Log Heaven

Here's our log staircase, just inviting you to come up and survey the log kingdom. Our cat (Marvin) loves weaving in and out of the rails and perching himself on top to meow at us. The steps are half logs - rounded on the bottom, flat on top. I'm looking for a small corner table to put on the staircase landing so it can showcase a nice vase or wooden loon carving or maybe just some silk flowers. You can see the temporary handrails that are fastened to the log one so we would pass the city inspection. I think it detracts from the log handrails so the temporary one might accidentally get removed....
