Lee Bontecou

By Candlelight

Edmund Monsiel

Monsiel's intricate labyrinths and worlds dominated by faces were all hand drawn around 1942 onto small scraps of paper by candlelight. Perhaps a cathartic activity to busy himself with as he awaited convinced that he would be captured by the Nazis. I was fortunate to see several of his drawings, and though a cliche- you cannot help but affirm that art is better in the flesh. the meticulous nature and minuscule faces into faces beside other faces can only truly be appreciated from the original.

Henry Darger

Henry Darger

One of those things that you only come to appreciate when you experience it in the flesh.. I came across the work of outsider artist Henry Darger the other day and was instantly captivated.
Large scale panoramic drawings, with this delicate palette of colours, so pleasing to the eye. The collage and elaborate subject matter keep you looking ; you try to figure out what is going on in these fantastical pieces. His background was pretty sad, though I still have to read up on the matter, but he is definitely one to note!
