YEKPO ZACHARIE : "La vedette du Soleil"

Yekpo Zacharie Laurel also called "La vedette du Soleil"  is a singer-songwriter who recorded with various bands. The first 10 inches was redcorded with El Rego's band, Los Commandos. The song "Seizo Mamon Agbon" is a very attractive pachanga rhythm. "Hou We Lele Mi" is an excellent sato rhythm that I recomand you.

Yekpo Zacharie Laurel alias "La vedette du Soleil" est un chanteur compositeur qui enregistré avec différents orchestres. Le premier disque a été enregistré avec l'orchestre de El Rego, Los Commandos. Le morceau "Seizo Mamon Agbon" est un rythme pachanga très séduisant. "Hou We Lele Mi" est un excellent rythme sato.

The second 7 inches was recorded with orchestra "Les As du Bénin". The music is traditional and more Yekpo Zacharie's own style. I'll let you judge.

Orchestre DIAMANT NOIR

I would like to thank Ogoun Ferraille for sharing with us this previously unknown "Diamant Noir" band on Oro blogpsot. As often in Benin music discography, I don't have any informations about the band and still less about the composer: Elzo Malta.

I know that "Bohicon" is a famous town next to Abomey, the Dahomey kingdom's capital. This 7 inches vinyl is excellent, especially side 1 with "Lo Re Ekou" title which is a dangerous Sato rhythm.

Je remercie Ogoun Ferraille pour avoir partagé avec nous cet orchestre Diamant Noir, inconnu auparavant dans la discographie du blog Oro. Le compositeur se nomme Elzo Malta et comme souvent au Bénin, je n'ai pas d'informations sur cet artiste et encore moin sur l'orchestre "Diamant Noir du Bohicon". 

Bohicon est une ville carrefour entre Cotonou et Abomey, la capitale du royaume du Dahomey. Ce 45 tours des années 70's est exceellent, surtout la face A, avec le titre "Ekou Lo Re" qui est un redoutable rythme Sato.

Un ami m'a ramené ce célèbre disque du Poly-Rythmo qui contient le fabuleux titre "Karateka", composé par le guitariste soliste du groupe: "Papillon". Le vinyl est tellement de mauvaise qualité que je n'ai pas pu le numériser. HEUREUSEMENT, OGOUN FERRAILLE m'a envoyé un coup de pied retourné du fameux "Karateka" en excellente qualité. "Double esquive !!!"

A friend brought me this famous Poly-Rythmo record that contains fabulous title "Karateka", composed by the lead-guitarist of the band: "Papillon". The vinyl is so bad that I can't rip it. FORTUNATLY, Ogoun Ferraille sent me a front kick of the famous "Karateka" in excellent quality. "Double dodge!".

Nous sommes des Global Groovers attendant des jours noirs, scrutant la guillotine. En attendant voici un vieux Polaroïd de Poly-Rythmo comme une copie de l'année 1972, au Dahomey.

Ce vinyl a été édité par le label "Echos Sonores du Dahomey" et produit par Madame Grataissy. Le célèbre Joseph Aménoudji dit "Vicky" compose et chante. L'enregistrement  contient sur la face A, un morceau sato typique du Poly-Rythmo et sur la face B, un morceau cavacha, intitulé "La Vérité Entière". Un titre qui parle...

Les Grands Génies de Cotonou

I ended the year with a totally unknown band for me. "les Grands Génies" recorded this single in the early 70's. Side A, "Tche We Atcheke" , is a terrible Sato rhythm. I know nothing about the composer, Joseph Devi, and even less about the label "Daho-Disco Ambiance". Excellent year 2012, it will be full of surprises from Benin.

Je termine l'année avec un orchestre totalement inconnu pour moi. "Les Grands Génies" ont enregistré ce disque vers le début des années 70. La face A "Tche We Atcheke" est un terrible rythme Sato. Je ne connais rien non plus sur le compositeur, Joseph Sevi, et encore moins sur le label "Daho-Disco Ambiance". Excellente année 2012, elle sera pleine de surprises béninoises...

Danialou Sagbohan & Les Astronautes (1975)

I am very happy to share this fabulous and rare record from Danialou Sagbohan that I already presented on radio at the Mumbo Jumbo cession. You can listen here.

The band "Les Astronautes" was one of firt El Rego's band. El Rego created by the more "Los Commandos", but "Les Astronautes" persisted and recorded with other singers as Danialou Sagbohan. I must say that this record is prodigious, the genius of Sagbohan is concentrated.

First, the title "Missi Me" is a delicious afro-cuban rhythm. The brass and guitar solo caress sweet Sagbohan's voice. The other song "Mina Gan" is a piece of art, between voodoo rhythm, jazz and funk. Sagbohan is known to have recorded the first "Sato" rhythm. The name "Sato" created by Clement Melome from Poly-Rythmo is actually the common name for all different modernized and voodoo rhythms. Indeed "Sato" is not voodoo, it's a rhythm played by royal orphans inside Kingdoms of Dahomey. The rhythm is no longer played and became more popular. Clement Melome and Poly-Rythmo used this "Sato" term footprint so as not to offend the sensitive soul of Voodoo. 

Like I said, Sagbohan is the first to have played and recorded "Sato" rhythm, in 1973, with Black Santiago band and Ignace de Souza. The title was "Zangbeto" (Voodoo night watchmen) and you can here "them" here. "Mina Gan" is taken from a traditional rhythm of Goun people called Kaka and which Sagbohan transfigured into jazz. A song that I particularly love.

Je suis très content de partager ce disque très rare de Danialou Sagbohan que j'ai présenté lors de l'émission radio Mumbo Jambo et que vous pouvez écouter ici. L'orchestre "Les Astronautes" était l'un des premiers orchestres d'El rego. El Rego crée par la suite "Los Commandos", mais "Les Astronautes" perdurent et enregistrent avec d'autres chanteur tel que Sagbohan. Et je dois dire que ce 45 tours est prodigieux, tout le génie de Danialou y est concentré.

Les cuivres et la guitare solo caressent la voix sucrée de Sagbohan. L'autre titre "Mina Gan" est un morceau d'anthologie, entre rythme traditionnel, jazz et funk. Sagbohan est connu pour avoir enregistré le premier morceau dit "Sato". Ce nom "Sato" crée par Clément Mélomé du Poly-Rythmo est en fait en nom commun pour désigner les tous différents rythmes vaudous modernisés. A vrai dire le rythme Sato n'est pas Vaudou, c'est un rythme royal anciennement joué par les orphelins des royaumes du Bénin. Ce rythme n'étant plus joué, il est devenu populaire. Clément Mélomé et le Poly-Rythmo ont empreinté ce terme Sato afin de ne pas choquer les âme sensibles du vaudou.

Comme je disais Sagbohan est le premier à avoir joué des rythmes "Sato", en 1973, avec l'orchestre Black Santiago et le titre "Zangbeto" (Gardien de nuit vaudou) et que vous pouvez entendre ici. "Mina Gan" est un rythme traditionnel de l'Ethnie Goun appelé Kaka et que Sagbohan transfigure en Jazz. Un morceau que j'adore...

Pynasco & Les Volcans (1975)

Sebastien Ahouangnimon, called Pynasco, is a singer and composer who began his career in 1973 with Poly-Rythmo orchestra and Discafric Band. He composed famous songs like "Zizi" or "Mi Hlin Migan". He recorded on this 7 inches, with "Les Volcans" orchestra, two fabulous titles. On side 1, "Affou" is a fabulous afrobeat tune, and on side 2, "La Vie" is a singular sato tune. African modern music is condensed on this record edited by an obscure label: "Palais du Disque".

Sébastien Ahouangnimon dit Pynasco est un chanteur et compositeur qui a débuté en 1973 avec l'orchestre Discafric Band et l'orchestre Poly-Rythmo. Il a composé de célèbres titres tels que "Zizi"ou "Mi Hlin Migan". Il enregistre sur ce disque deux fabuleux titres avec l'orchestre "Les Volcans". le morceau "Affou" est un superbe afrobeat et "La Vie" un singulier sato. Je ne connais pas le label "Palais du Disque" mais il mérite d'être connu. Ce 45 tours est le neuvième et je serais curieux de connaitre les huit premiers.

Orchestre Les Astronautes de Cotonou

Here is a new band from Benin on Oro, "Les Astronautes de Cotonou" and a new label, "Etoiles Noires" (Black Stars). The orchestra was formed, I believe, by El Rego before 1970. Subsequently, "Les Astronautes", following their own voice recorded with many authors such as Desire G. de Souza around 1975. Side 1, "Egbeton Dje Bodji", is nostalgic sato rhythm and Side 2, "Ahouilivou Dougbe", is an indispensable cavacha rhythm. Another fabulous post about "the astronauts" will be published soon...

Voici un nouvel orchestre béninois sur Oro, Les Astronautes de Cotonou, et un nouveau label, "Etoiles Noires". L'orchestre a été formé, je crois, par El Rego avant 1970. Par la suite, "Les Astronautes" ont suivi leur propre voix et enregistré avec de nombreux auteurs tels que Désiré G. de Souza vers 1975. La face A, "Egbeton Djè Bodji", est un rythme sato nostalgique et la Face B, "Ahouilivou Dougbé", un rythme cavacha indispensable. Un autre fabuleux courrier sur Les Astronautes de Cotonou sera bientôt publié...

This album was composed by the saxophonist player of the band, Loko Pierre. It was edited on Albarika Store label in 1978. I particulary enjoy the beautiful gazzo rhyhtm tune "Super Yao Bebenon" sung by a super Eskill Lohento.
