The One Man Band / L'Homme Orchestre: DANIALOU SAGBOHAN (Full movie / 2006)

After several years of sleep, I decided to share and give life again to this beautiful portrait. A documentary which I signed images, editing and directing. From 200 to 2007, I followed Danialou Sagbohan throughout Benin. An immersion with one of the famous singer and musician of african continent.
I also dedicate this film to Djibril Sagbohan, the eldest son of Danialou, who participated to the movie, who assisted me ad who tragically died december 12, 2013, during the birthday party of his father.

Après plusieurs années de sommeil, j'ai décidé de redonner vie à ce magnifique portrait sur la toile. Un film dont j'ai signé les images, le montage et la réalisation. De 2000 à 2007, j'ai suivi Danialou Sagbohan dans tout le Bénin. Une immersion avec l'un des plus grand chanteur et musicien africain. 

Je dédicace aussi ce film à Djibril Sagbohan, le fils ainé de Danialou, qui a participé au film, qui m'a assisté et qui est mort tragiquement le 12 décembre 2013, durant la fête anniversaire de son père.

Orchestre BLACK SANTIAGO & Danialou SAGBOHAN (1972)

Durant l'année 1972, l'orchestre Black Santiago enregistre de nombreux 45 tours sur le label béninois Tropiques Satel. Danialou Sagbohan apparait comme chanteur sur plusieurs titres comme ceux qui suivent. Il faut une oreille aguerrie pour reconnaître la voix de Sagbohan qui est encore fluette mais son aura électrise tous les enregistrements. En 1971, durant 6 mois, le Black Santiago assure la première partie de Fela Ransome Kuti au club Kacadu, à Lagos. Sagbohan est à la batterie. Fela écoute le jeune autodidacte et lui confie après le concert: "Toi, tu es dangereux".

Les deux morceaux de ce disque sont composés par Sebastien Houedanou dit "Pacheco", autre membre singulier du Black Santiago. Mais le morceau "Gbe O Houzou" est chanté par Sagbohan et il est difficile de croire que ce n'est pas lui qui a composé tellement il a d'emprise sur l'enregistrement.Il reste de cette période des enregistrements funk et afrobeat redoutables tels que le morceau Paulina. Sagbohan est aux percussions et aux choeurs.

Sur cet autre disque des Black Santiago, Sagbohan chante sur le titre "Zangbeto". Ce morceau est particulier, on peut dire que c'est le premier morceau d'influence vodou. En effet les "Zangbeto" sont des masques vodou très populaires au Bénin. Bien avant les rythmes sato du Poly-Rythmo et bien plus afrobeat que Fela, Sagbohan imprègne de jazz ce sublime morceau. "Zangbeto" est un titre  révolutionnaire, guerrier. La batterie de Sagbohan et les percussions qui l'accompagne le rendent encore plus génial.

Danialou Sagbohan & Les Astronautes (1975)

I am very happy to share this fabulous and rare record from Danialou Sagbohan that I already presented on radio at the Mumbo Jumbo cession. You can listen here.

The band "Les Astronautes" was one of firt El Rego's band. El Rego created by the more "Los Commandos", but "Les Astronautes" persisted and recorded with other singers as Danialou Sagbohan. I must say that this record is prodigious, the genius of Sagbohan is concentrated.

First, the title "Missi Me" is a delicious afro-cuban rhythm. The brass and guitar solo caress sweet Sagbohan's voice. The other song "Mina Gan" is a piece of art, between voodoo rhythm, jazz and funk. Sagbohan is known to have recorded the first "Sato" rhythm. The name "Sato" created by Clement Melome from Poly-Rythmo is actually the common name for all different modernized and voodoo rhythms. Indeed "Sato" is not voodoo, it's a rhythm played by royal orphans inside Kingdoms of Dahomey. The rhythm is no longer played and became more popular. Clement Melome and Poly-Rythmo used this "Sato" term footprint so as not to offend the sensitive soul of Voodoo. 

Like I said, Sagbohan is the first to have played and recorded "Sato" rhythm, in 1973, with Black Santiago band and Ignace de Souza. The title was "Zangbeto" (Voodoo night watchmen) and you can here "them" here. "Mina Gan" is taken from a traditional rhythm of Goun people called Kaka and which Sagbohan transfigured into jazz. A song that I particularly love.

Je suis très content de partager ce disque très rare de Danialou Sagbohan que j'ai présenté lors de l'émission radio Mumbo Jambo et que vous pouvez écouter ici. L'orchestre "Les Astronautes" était l'un des premiers orchestres d'El rego. El Rego crée par la suite "Los Commandos", mais "Les Astronautes" perdurent et enregistrent avec d'autres chanteur tel que Sagbohan. Et je dois dire que ce 45 tours est prodigieux, tout le génie de Danialou y est concentré.

Tout d'abord, le titre "Missi Mè" est rythme afro-cubain délicieux. Les cuivres et la guitare solo caressent la voix sucrée de Sagbohan. L'autre titre "Mina Gan" est un morceau d'anthologie, entre rythme traditionnel, jazz et funk. Sagbohan est connu pour avoir enregistré le premier morceau dit "Sato". Ce nom "Sato" crée par Clément Mélomé du Poly-Rythmo est en fait en nom commun pour désigner les tous différents rythmes vaudous modernisés. A vrai dire le rythme Sato n'est pas Vaudou, c'est un rythme royal anciennement joué par les orphelins des royaumes du Bénin. Ce rythme n'étant plus joué, il est devenu populaire. Clément Mélomé et le Poly-Rythmo ont empreinté ce terme Sato afin de ne pas choquer les âme sensibles du vaudou.

Comme je disais Sagbohan est le premier à avoir joué des rythmes "Sato", en 1973, avec l'orchestre Black Santiago et le titre "Zangbeto" (Gardien de nuit vaudou) et que vous pouvez entendre ici. "Mina Gan" est un rythme traditionnel de l'Ethnie Goun appelé Kaka et que Sagbohan transfigure en Jazz. Un morceau que j'adore...

T.P. Orchestre Poly-Rythmo & Adjaho Coffi feat SAGBOHAN DANIALOU

This fantastic album was recorded in 1981 with Poly-Rythmo Orchestra. When I heard it I discovered that Sagbohan Danialou was singing the chorus and playing drums. Adjaho Coffi is known to be a famous comedian but also a great composer and singer. Some of the songs are purely inspired by traditional rhythms like Kakagbo. We can feel in those rhythms Sagbohan's arangements.

Cet album absolument génial a été enregistré en 1981 avec l'orchestre Poly-Rythmo. En l'écoutant j'ai découvert que Sagbohan Danialou chantait les choeurs et qu'il était à la cession rythmique. Adjaho Coffi était un fameux comédien, diplômé en France, mais aussi un grand auteur compositeur, ainsi que chanteur. Certains des titres de cet album sont merveilleusement inspirés par des rythmes traditionnels tels que le Kakagbo. On peut sentir dans les arrangements la pâte de Sagbohan.

INITIATION INTO VOODOO MUSIC : Danialou Sagbohan

Sagbohan is known to be the greatest traditional music's singer. He has not been initiated into voodoo religion, nevertheless, he is the best voodoo representative with his famous rhythm called Kaka.

The Kaka rhythm is coming from Porto Novo. The name comes from the kakagbo instrument which is played with bamboo sticks.
