Dan Satch Joseph leader of his The Atomic "8" Dance Band is a pure tone trumpeter and arranger. Dan Satch started playing the trumpet in 1959 and was the trumpeter leader of Bobby Benson & his Jam Session Band until 1961. In 1962 he moved to Aba and formed the Atomic "8" Dance Band.

H.C. Clementophe with SUPER BORGOU & POLY-RYTHMO (1975)

Very interesting vinyl composed and sung by a totally unknown artist of Benin (as usual): H.C. Clementophe. Side 1, with wonderful tune "Alougba Hué", is backed by Super Borgou orchestra and Side 2 is backed by Poly-Rythmo. Have good time. I bought it this morning in Paris, during a record convention.

Vinyle très intéressant composé et chanté H.C. Clementophe, artiste béninois totalement inconnu, comme d'habitude. J'ai trouvé ce disque ce matin dans une convention du disque à Levallois-Perret. La face 1 est enregistrée avec l'orchestre Super Borgou sur un morceau génial: "Alougba Hué". La face 2 a été enregistrée avec l'orchestre Poly-Rythmo. Bonne écoute.

FERRY DJIMMY & His DJI-KINS (1971-1975)

I never mentioned remarkable beninese artist Ferry Djimmy, and for good reason, I have no record of him. Thanks to Pierre (Jam Magica) and Nuno (Kêtu Records) I can share this first Ferry Djimmy's album. Ferry Djimmy is always backed by an Ivorian band, The Dji-Kins, which was resident of famous Apollo club of Cotonou. Danialou Sagbohan notably made his debut with this band. I don't know who is the drummer of the band but he is for sure terrible. Unfortunately, on the this first Ferry Djimmy's album, recorded in 1971, i have only found three titles to share. Sorry

Je n'ai jamais évoqué Ferry Djimmy, artiste béninois remarquable, et pour cause, je ne possède aucun disque de lui. Grace à Pierre (Jam Magica) et Nuno (Kêtu records) je peux partager ce premier album de Ferry Djimmy. Ferry Djimmy est toujours accompagné par un orchestre Ivoirien, les Dji-Kins, qui on fait le bonheur du public béninois dans le club Apollo où ils résidaient. Danialou Sagbohan a notamment fait ses débuts avec cet orchestre. Je ne sais pas qui est le batteur de cet orchestre mais il est redoutable. Malheureusement, sur le premier album de Ferry Djimmy, enregistré en 1971, je n'ai trouvé que trois titres à partager. Désolé.

On the second record, distributed in 1975, and posted by famous Radiodiffusion blog, we can find the same funk style music influence that pleases european auditors. Ferry Djimmy and his Dji-Kins band had such tremendous talent that their funk style is universal.

Amadou Traore BALLAKE (Burkina-Faso/1975)

I think it is time to repost this beautiful record of Amadou Ballake. For sure one of the best african voice. This single was recorded in 1975 with Super Volta band in Burkina Faso and pressed in Benin by Satel label. On title "Bar Konou Mousso" Ballake counts the story of a pragmatic prostitute. She says: "Ballake, wait until tomorrow, i have a meeting with the white man at the Independance Hotel, it's 5000 Francs... Ballake, leave me alone, you don't have enough money. Musician is not someone..."

Je pense qu'il est temps de reposter ce superbe disque d'Amadou Ballake, l'une des plus belle voix africaine de l'époque, sans équivoque. Ce 45 tours a été enregistré en 1975 avec l'orchestre des Super Volta au Burkina-Faso et pressé au Bénin par la grande maison Satel. Sur le titre "Bar Konou Mousso" Ballaké nous conte l'histoire de cette prostituée qui ignore le pauvre Ballake en faveur "du blanc, à l'hôtel Indépendance, pour 5000 francs".

I found another vinyl of Les Volcans recorded in 1975. "Miwalo" is a great pachanga rhythm composed by Julien Da Costa and sung by Paul Alapini and Adrien Lanmadoucelo. "Kinto" is blues alos comosed by Julien Da Costa and sung by Adrien Lanmandoucelo.

T.P. POLY-RYTHMO: "Karateka" (1975)

Un ami m'a ramené ce célèbre disque du Poly-Rythmo qui contient le fabuleux titre "Karateka", composé par le guitariste soliste du groupe: "Papillon". Le vinyl est tellement de mauvaise qualité que je n'ai pas pu le numériser. HEUREUSEMENT, OGOUN FERRAILLE m'a envoyé un coup de pied retourné du fameux "Karateka" en excellente qualité. "Double esquive !!!"

A friend brought me this famous Poly-Rythmo record that contains fabulous title "Karateka", composed by the lead-guitarist of the band: "Papillon". The vinyl is so bad that I can't rip it. FORTUNATLY, Ogoun Ferraille sent me a front kick of the famous "Karateka" in excellent quality. "Double dodge!".

AMA MAÏGA & Les Almamy du Melodie Volta (Mali - 1975)

I have never heard a record as that of Ama Maiga of Mali. I don not regret paying it expensive on ebay (300 US Dollars). Ama Maïga 's guitar is prodigious, I would love to hear more of it. I only know that Ama is called "the Malian arrow". The song "Deny Tologuelen" is a masterpiece of modern African music and it was recorded in Upper Volta (Burkina-Faso) in 1975.

Je n'ai jamais autant écouté un disque que celui d'Ama Maïga du Mali. Je ne regrette pas de l'avoir payer cher sur ebay (300 Dollars). La guitare d'Ama Maïga est prodigieuse, j'aimerai tant découvrir plus de lui, je sais seulement qu'on l'appelle "la flèche Malienne". Sebastien Ahouangnimon, called Pynasco, is a singer and composer who began his career in 1973 with Poly-Rythmo orchestra and Discafric Band. He composed famous songs like "Zizi" or "Mi Hlin Migan". He recorded on this 7 inches, with "Les Volcans" orchestra, two fabulous titles. On side 1, "Affou" is a fabulous afrobeat tune, and on side 2, "La Vie" is a singular sato tune. African modern music is condensed on this record edited by an obscure label: "Palais du Disque".

Il a composé de célèbres titres tels que "Zizi"ou "Mi Hlin Migan". Orchestre Les Astronautes de Cotonou

Here is a new band from Benin on Oro, "Les Astronautes de Cotonou" and a new label, "Etoiles Noires" (Black Stars). The orchestra was formed, I believe, by El Rego before 1970. Subsequently, "Les Astronautes", following their own voice recorded with many authors such as Desire G. de Souza around 1975. Side 1, "Egbeton Dje Bodji", is nostalgic sato rhythm and Side 2, "Ahouilivou Dougbe", is an indispensable cavacha rhythm. Another fabulous post about "the astronauts" will be published soon...

Voici un nouvel orchestre béninois sur Oro, Les Astronautes de Cotonou, et un nouveau label, "Etoiles Noires". L'orchestre a été formé, je crois, par El Rego avant 1970. Par la suite, "Les Astronautes" ont suivi leur propre voix et enregistré avec de nombreux auteurs tels que Désiré G. de Souza vers 1975. La face A, "Egbeton Djè Bodji", est un rythme sato nostalgique et la Face B, "Ahouilivou Dougbé", un rythme cavacha indispensable. Un autre fabuleux courrier sur Les Astronautes de Cotonou sera bientôt publié...

T.P. Orchestre Poly-Rythmo (Echos du Terroir)

Je suis désolé de proposer un vinyle de mauvaise qualité sonore mais cet enregistrement du Poly-Rythmo est tellement surprenant qu'il fait oublier sa dégradation. Ce groupe réserve toujours des surprise dans la variété des rythmes qu'ils jouent, en particulier sur le morceau Sato de la Face B: "Ati Sissin". La guitare et les cuivres font curieusement penser à la musique éthiopienne de la même époque.

I am sorry to offer a poor sound quality of vinyl but this recording from Poly-Rythmo is so surprising that it makes you forget its old age and degradation. this band is full of surprises in the variety of rhythms they play, especially on the Sato title on side B: "Ati Sissin". the guitar and brass sound curiously like Ethiopian music from the same period.

Nestor Hountondji (1975)

J'ai le plaisir de présenter trois disques composés et chanté en 1975 par Nestor Hountondji avec l'Orchestre des Volcans de la Capitale ainsi que "Les Perles Noires", tous enregistrés sur le label "Black Dragons". Du pur bonheur.

Avant ça une biographie écrite par le journaliste Béninois Zéphirin Toasségnitché:

L'Histoire de la cité royale d'Abomey a retenu que Nestor Hountondji, officier de la gendarmerie nationale hors classe, est l'un des piliers de la musique béninoise. Néle 06 septembre 1939 à Abomey, Nestor Hountondji alias Dji Nesto est issu d'une famille où la chanson est un moyen d'expression. A l'âge de dix ans, se souvient l'artiste, "je fredonnais déjà des chansons composées par mon père Tokpé Hountondji qui fut un célèbre chanteur, auteur compositeur de sa génération". Tokpé, le père, jouait a cette époque le rythme assida du style agbadja d'origine adja qui a disparu du répertoire des rythmes d'Abomey, la royale. A la mort de son père il étudie la flute, la trompette et le piano et fait sa toute première entrée sur scène en 1958.Il est le plus convoité du pays et intègre l'orchestre Daho-Melo en 1961. Il enregistre son premier single en 1962 et cela lui a valu des sanctions disciplinaires au sein de la gendarmerie. Il fut contraint de rejoindre l'orchestre "National Jazz" de la gendarmerie qui deviendra plus tard "Les Volcans de la Capitale". Puis suivront d'autres formations comme les "Black Dragons", "Les Perles Noires", "Les Sympathics" puis sa propre formation "Les Axes 80".

Le premier disque, enregistré avec "Les Volcans" offre un terrible rythme gazzo "Emalon Ni Hokowo" dont la flute traditionnelle hypnotique vous transporte. Le titre "Souvenir" est un slow dont les arrangements de cuivre son splendides.

Le deuxième disque, enregistré aussi avec les Volcans est marqué par le morceau "Attention", très martial et révolutionnaire, mais plutôt drôle et encore excellent dans ses cuivres. Bien entendu, Nestor est au saxophone. Le deuxième titre "Fa Be Gbe" est un rythme agbadja dont les cuivres sont encore parfaits.

Le dernier, enregistré avec l'orchestre "Les Perles Noires" est aussi impressionant. Sur "Gangan Nan Gansu" Nestor nous dévoile tout ses talents de saxophoniste. Sur "Ogbe Non Kpo" indemne. On ne peut qu'apprécier tout ce travail qui est fait autour de la musique traditionnelle et de sa modernisation. Bravo Dji-Nesto.

Mamadou Doumbia: Vol.1 & Vol.2 on Badmos (Côte d'Ivoire, 1975)

Mamadou Doumbia is a guitarist from Côte d'Ivoire who is part, after independence, of the first generation of modern musicians, with Amédée Pierre and his "Ivoro Star" band, presumed first Ivorian musician and singer.

In 1962, Mamadou Doumbia created the band "Trio de l'entente" which will become "Orchestre de l'Entente" ("orchestra of the agreement") and recorded  over sixteen 7-inches singles on Safi Deen label. From 1975, he recorded on Badmos label, here is two volumes.

Badmos, a name that rhymed with music in Ivory Coast. Badmos the almighty. Sam Mangwana was singing: "Badmos handsome man, very slim, you've turned my head". He was born Gbadamassi Raimi of Nigerian origin and for the purposes of its business, it shall be known as Badmos. H produced many artists such as Ernesto Djedje, Bailly Spinto, Jimmy Yacinthe, Wedji Ped, François Lougah, Salif Keita, and of course Mamadou Doumbia.

Traore Amadou Ballake & Ses Dieux (1975)

I wanted to re-post this record in a better quality ripping. That's done. This album is beautiful and one of the best Ballake. Funk, rock, psychedelic, mandingo, Traore founds is unique style. Note that the great guitarist Mangue Konde already accompanies him.

Depuis longtemps je voulais re-poster ce disque dans une meilleur qualité d'enregistrement. C'est chose faite. Cet album est splendide et l'un des meilleurs de Ballake. Funk, rock, psyché, mandingue, Traore fonde son style si particulier. A noter que le grand guitariste Konde Mangue l'accompagne déjà.

Cornaire Salifou Michel is a singer and guitarist from Benin who recorded his first title, "Amanicer", in 1975, with the orchestra "Les Perles Noires" (The Black Pearls), a band known for its Afro-Cuban influenses. "Amanicer" is a great tune with a heady guitare.

For two years Cornaire Salifou Michel, also known as "Miguelito Cuin", remains silent. In 1977, he records with the orchestra "El Rego and his Commandos" in a new style, hybrid, traditional inspired, with a fantastic organ, greatful. The label "Etape du Voyageur" ("stage traveler") is unknown for me but rich in meaning. This records has been posted by the wonderful blog Worldservice and this is its link (thank you for him).
