Vidna Obmana - The Ultimated Sign of Burning Death (1985)

Previously on OPIUM HUM:
Vidna Obmana - Gathering in Frozen Beauty (1989)
Vidna Obmana - Echoing Delight (1993)
Steve Roach & Vidna Obmana - The Well of Souls (1995)
Vidna Obmana - The River of Appearance (1996)

The Ultimated Sign of Burning Death is Vidna Obmana's first release, and as you may have guessed from the title, it is far, far removed from the tranquil ambient/new age sound for which the project would become known. Instead of gentle tribal drumming and ethereal synthesizers, we get rumbling static, inhuman howls, distorted moans, cacophonous tape loops, and jagged feedback. It took me years to track this down, and I still haven't been able to find The Face That Must Die -- any leads would be greatly appreciated.

Track listing:
1. Move
2. Headdecay II
3. Skinned Alive
4. Unvital
5. Shroud
6. The Inquisition II
7. Doom to Die
8. Hell of Victory
9. Suck Blood

Vidna Obmana - The River of Appearance (1996)

Previously:
Vidna Obmana - Gathering in Frozen Beauty (1989)
Vidna Obmana - Echoing Delight (1993)
Steve Roach & Vidna Obmana - Well of Souls (1995)

Lulling, melancholic, nocturnal ambience composed mostly of gauzy synths, with some gentle percussion and ye olde rainsticks. I feel somewhat obligated to post this record, as it has been my go-to sleepytime record for the past four nights, but it's great when I'm awake, too!

Track listing:
1. The Angelic Appearance
2. Ephemeral Vision
3. A Scenic Fall
4. Night-Blooming
5. The Solitary Circle
6. Weaving Cluster
7. Streamers of Stillness
8. The Ominous Dwelling

Vidna Obmana - Gathering in Frozen Beauty (1989)

Previously on OPIUM HUM:
Vidna Obmana - Echoing Delight (1993)
Steve Roach & Vidna Obmana - Well of Souls (1995)

Haunting ambience from this Belgian composer. Icy floes of synthesizer -- crystalline chords, simple melodic mantras, dissonant drones -- drift about with an eerie calm.

Track listing:
1. Dazzling Array 1
2. Lost in the Swirling Distance
3. Inside the Empty Mass
4. Dazzling Array 2
5. Before Mutual Grace
6. Upon Steel Heaven
7. Dazzling Array 3
8. Reflecting Deep Stars
9. Into Gray Divides
10. Gathering in Frozen Beauty

Vidna Obmana - Echoing Delight (1993)

Vidna Obmana is Belgian composer Dirk Serries, who specializes in the same type of drone-based, tribal-flavored ambient as Opium Hum favorite Steve Roach, with whom he has released a couple of collaborative full-lengths (here's one that I posted back in August.) Echoing Delight is arguably his defining moment: a spacious, shimmering, nocturnal world of drifting synths, drones, and insistent, trance-like percussion.

Track listing:
1. Winter Mouvement
2. Crystal Traveling
3. The Empty Night
4. Echoing Delight
5. Narrow Gloom (Part Two)
6. Glass Splendour
