Pic of the Week (August 29, 2014): NW694 Loon Close-Up

"I have been intrigued by loons for many, many years. My license plate was even "Loon 1" for awhile! And I absolutely am entranced by this photo. I mean, look at the water droplets, the bubbles on his back, the feather detail and the muted colors are incredible. "

Pic of the Week: Hummingbird Dance

Hummingbird Dance ©Jim Brandenburg

"How delicate, the world's tiniest bird that can flash its bright colors, as well as hide them if needed. The bright radiant color on humming birds comes from iridescent coloring like on a soap bubble or prism. There it is, holding its body perfectly still while wings are beating 70–200 times per second. They are the only birds that can fly both forward and backwards, hover in mid-air, fly sideways and even upside down. This lovely image is captured with a ghostly reflective background."

Pic of the Week: Cape Buffalo and Glossy Starling

"If this isn't life!"

~ Milli
Brandenburg Gallery

Notes on Cape Buffalo and Glossy Starling from Jim Brandenburg:

"I was on assignment in Kenya for National Geographic Magazine when I happened upon this scene. My story was Rhinos but this moment electrified me. I still remember the feeling, a rare moment in my photographic career, when many compelling elements converged. The delicate rain fell upon a colorful Glossy Starling as it sat nonchalantly in a thorn tree in the foreground of one of Africa's most dangerous animals. The Cape Buffalo kills more people each year than lions - no gentle cow. With an unpredictable mood they can charge quickly with deadly power. As Milli's comment says, life's forces residing in one moment.
Delicate appearances can have ominous backdrops...
This image rarely gets chosen by editors but
remains one of my personal favorites."

Pic of the Week: Heron, Pine, Fog

"There is so much to love about this image. The beautiful composition, the unexpectedness of the heron atop the spruce, the stately leaning white pine, the softening fog - simply elegant."

~Diane
Brandenburg Gallery
Ravenwood Studios

Notes on Heron, Pine, Fog from Jim Brandenburg:

"Most people put their camera away in the fog or bad weather. I see it as an opportunity to create an emotional atmosphere. In this case, the fog brought a simplifying effect - acting like a seamless studio backdrop, allowing the subject to stand out from its surroundings.

I was shooting the 90 days of summer (which became the Looking for the Summer book) when I came upon this scene at Section 12 Lake near my home. I had shot from this place many times, but on this day everything looked better than usual. The forest is visually complex if not chaotic. I often find it difficult to represent the simpler elements, the ones I most respond to. On this day, the fog acted as a filter.

In June, 2003, National Geographic Magazine published selections from this 90 day journal in a story called 'Boundary Waters'. It was the first non-film (digital) photography story in the magazine's history.

The letters to the editor in the NG Magazine were quite critical of the use of digital cameras in the next month's issue. Being the first 'digital' story ever, it raised a lot of eyebrows.

I remember well the mistrust I had of my digital camera's ability to properly record the scenes, especially the important ones.  I actually carried an extra film camera body with me to 'back-up' the digital version.

Today, with the extremely rare exception, all of the National Geographic's stories are shot digitally."

Pic of the Week: Catching Snails

"Although Jim made this image years ago, it wasn't until recently that I discovered it. In terms of color and composition, it was unlike any of his other work. Travel through Jim's work is common- this is one of the first pieces that really transported me."

~Jayne
Brandenburg Gallery
Ravenwood Studios

Notes on Catching Snails from Jim Brandenburg:

"This image was shot on assignment for National Geographic during the Cold War era in the early 80's so it was rare for Americans to roam about, although I did have constant 'babysitters'. It was also at the end of the Chinese Cultural Revolution after Mao.  I was one of the earliest American photojournalists allowed to see some of the off-limit places in northern China, like their underground cities built as bunkers against possible attack from the USSR. As one of the few Caucasians ever to visit, I had crowds of wide-eyed young people surrounding me almost everywhere I went; I felt like a rock star.

This image was made in Beijing at the Old Imperial Palace - the fellow was catching snails by dragging a net along the wall of the moat surrounding the palace. This was not a recreational pastime as food was scarce. When I noted the lack of birds, I was told Mao had instructed the people to catch and eat them.

China has completely transformed since this photograph was made."

"These patriotic predators have finally returned to the northland- just in time for the 4th of July! They fly ahead of me as I walk down the trails, buzzing around, protecting me from the tormenting mosquitoes. I hope that your picnics, parades, and parties are
attended by these beautiful creatures!"

Pic of the Week: Two Boys Walk in Village

"This beautiful photo captures a moment of a time gone by. China has been changing at a very fast pace over the past several decades, and scenes like this one are hard to find, if they are not gone already. There's something about this image that captures the sense of time for me, though, more so than many others. I think it might be the wisps of smoke and the moment between the boys, one having just put his arm around the other as they each take a step along the road, but I am drawn in as my eyes explore the photo and the smoke drifts by."

Pic of the Week: God is Our Landlord

"This image brings me back to my childhood on a farm and among farm folks, back when photographs were only black and white. I love the details in this hard-working barnyard: the metal roof, the water trough, the wire fence, the bent gutter and the peeling paint. I also like the contrast between the cockiness of the rooster and the humble message on the barn. Or maybe it’s that both the rooster and the farmer are confident in their own place in the world -
simple and profound."

Pic of the Week: Sheep with Phone Booth

"The red phone booth- an icon of the isles. And all these sheep lining up to make a call- if only they could sort out how to open that door. The complementary colors, the lighting, the composition- all brilliant, but I delight most in wondering who it is these sheep would like to speak with. Although this photograph was taken in the 80's, while Jim was photographing for the National Geographic book, Discovering Britain and Ireland, it feels timeless, a true classic."
