ART QUILTS: The House Quilt Project and Quilting Arts Magazine

I created this 14x14 inch quilt to donate to  The House Quilt Project
I had my watercolors printed on fabric by Spoonflower.

It started like this...

Then I added the flowers and hand stitching.  I hope the family that receives it likes it.

I have an article in this issue of Quilting Arts Magazine Dec/Jan 2019
My article is about travel and how it influences my artwork. These small quilts are in the magazine and inspired by my trip to Cuba earlier this year.

You know I love gelli plate printing! Here's my latest little completely hand-stitched art quilt from my original printed fabric.

I'm working on some pieces for my workshop at CRAFT NAPA next week (sorry it's been long sold out.) (There will be an artist sale on Friday, January 13 at the Napa Embassy Suites at 6:30 pm, if you are in the area. I'll be there selling my wares!)

Is it a quilt? Is it a sketchbook?

"I'll take Manhattan" handmade sketchbook (9.25 x 6 inches)  by Jane LaFazio

detail "I'll take Manhattan"by Jane LaFazio
This project started about 2 years ago (?) when I was creating a project for a 3-day workshop in New York City. The workshop didn't happen and either did this part of the project.  (Fabric was from City Quilter in NYC, but I see they don't carry it anymore.)

But I had the 'quilt' and knew it would make a cool sketchbook cover.

So, I added 10 pages (two-sided would make 20 pages) of Fabriano hot press watercolor paper. Hmm, maybe it will turn into a workshop after all....

Recycled Circles continues to be one of my most popular classes and projects. Here's a little video on my Recycled Circles (Layered and Fused Applique Art Quilts DVD in my JaneVille Etsy shop ) to inspire you.

OR, if you live in San Diego, you can take the class in person from my on Monday, May 9 at Visions Art Museum.

RECYCLED CIRCLES: a mixed media art quilt
May 9th, 9:30-5:00
Quilt Visions Museum, San Diego, California
Call to register,  619-546-4872
Fee: $100
Create a fabulous mixed media piece from your own cloth and a few paper scraps! As seen in “Cloth Paper Scissors” magazine [March 2009 issue] Jane’s Recycled Circles is a layered project that will teach you an assortment of techniques, while creating this guided, yet totally your own one of a kind art quilt. Each student’s work will look very very different, even though we’re all doing the same step by step process. The class is especially great for beginners, as you just can’t go wrong!

Flowers in the Window ~ a small art quilt

"Flowers in the Window" (12x7.5 inches) $150. by Jane LaFazio
I love being able to leverage or extend my drawings in my sketchbook into my other work. Here is a small art quilt, created from a drawing I did of tiny flower vases in my home. I love the journal page and it was fun, and labor intensive (!) to free motion machine stitch the images.

And then I did some hand embroidery to bring out the colors in the flowers.
