Magda urban guerilla knitter:

Because sometimes someone has an idea,
a vision
and a pile of old afghans and yarn
and on the right night
when the stars align
and the moon is foolish
they are able to create a soft urban
wrapsody.

UPDATE
remodelista recently posted a DIY version of this.
sadly, you won't find me making one any time soon.
but in case I ever learn to knit and find a bit of time,
here is the recipe, excerpted from the comments

Twinkle soft chunky wool using 19 or 20 needles. I think I used 5 or 6 skeins to make a decent sized throw at about 20.00 per skein.

Cascade's Magnum. Not sure on the needle size, but it looks to me like the following: CO 37 sts. Row 1 (and all RS rows): k2, p1, [k1, p1] 3 times, k2, p2, k2, p1, [k1, p1] 3 times, k2, p2, k2, p1, [k1, p1] 3 times, k2. Row 2 (and all WS rows): p2, k1, [p1, k1] 3 times, p2, k2, p2, k1, [p1, k1] 3 times, p2, k2, p2, k1, [p1, k1] 3 times, p2. Knit until desired length. BO all stiches. The edges may roll a little, so I'd recommend blocking, especially if you use 100% wool. If this isn't wide enough, just repeat the alternating 3 single ribs followed by 2 double ribs until it is wide enough.
