Here is the spread:

On newsstands now!

Song Stein House

framing progress at the Song-Stein House -
skylights and openings are framed in,
the window and door openings are ready,
and the central interior volumes are taking shape.

The shape of the space is already legible.

Menlo Park Addition and Remodel

This project was completed last year,
and now the fence is in.

Sego Kitchen progress

The kitchen is nearly done here.
Fine-tuning the lights, and working on the punch list.
We'll be waiting on a few Miele appliances to finish it all out,
and there are a few remaining pieces of cabinetry still due in.

This shot shows the induction cooktop in action.

Mahony May Studio

The back yard studio is complete,
and here are some snapshots from the Dwell photoshoot last month.
Look for it in the September issue!

home as inhabitable sculpture

I do like the way the building has entire walls of glass,
framing the landscape in 3D.

"The use of raw concrete and formal expressiveness are directly linked with the Sculpture House project, begun in 1962 by architect Jacques Gillet, whose constructive principle and idea of intuitive creation challenge the aesthetics of postwar modernism and instead return to the ancient roots of human existence, nature and organic architecture."

Japanese burnt cedar siding

my friend Scott has been documenting
some recent research on yakisugi

from his post:
Once the surface has been treated the wood requires no stains, sealers or other chemical treatments and is naturally resistant to insects.

open truss ceiling

great ceiling, well-done lighting.
exposed truss, painted out.
rustic floor with crisp drywall.

plywood adoration society

as a fellow lover of plywood,
I thoroughly enjoyed this video,
"Love Letter to Plywood."

porch house by Lake|Flato

unconditioned spaces tie small volumes together
for a less expensive building,
more tied to the site,
with a strong connection to the outdoors.

the buildings are factory built,
and the 'porch' elements are built on site.

and take a look at their other crisp yet warm modern work here

Tree rounds floor

My friend Jake Gorst
(whose latest kickstarter you should check out)
recently commented on Alastair Gordon's remarkable floor.

There was a similar floor in part of Robert Motherwell's
Long Island studio, designed by Jean Prouvé,

and William Wurster used tree rounds as an exterior paver

Brian Murphy pole barn house

Topanga.

totally brilliant:

the house is like a campus of buildings,
floating beneath this canopy.

2.24.2012

brazilian 70's architecture

amazing section
beautiful and simple

big, bold, brutalist form with
blurry lines between interior and exterior.

the outdoors winds its way through the whole building.

great materials, colors, and textures.
