Tord Gustavsen - Hymns & Visions Live In Loccum (2015)

Norwegian jazz pioneer Tord Gustavsen is back with a new project "Hymns & Visions" which features Afghan-German vocalist Simin Tander and long-standing partner Jarle Vespestad on drums. For his upcoming album on ECM, Tord Gustavsen turns his attention to interpretations of ancient Norwegian hymns. These tunes are, for him, his original and deepest ‘standards’ as a jazz musician, and the process was initiated by the inclusion of the hauntingly powerful version of "Eg veit i himmerik ei borg" (A Castle in Heaven) on his latest quartet release Extended Circle.

Tord Gustavsen & Jarle Vespestad - At The Sunside, Paris (2014)

Tord Gustavsen Quartet - Extended Circle (2014)

For Norwegian pianist Tord Gustavsen, the title of his sixth album for ECM has a programmatic significance. Extended Circle refers, he says, to the completion of a “double circle” of trilogies: the first with the trio heard on Changing Places, The Ground and Being There, and the second with the quartet (formed inside the expanded ensemble of Restored, Returned in 2009 and then documented on The Well in 2012). Extended Circle incorporates tunes inspired by chorales and spirituals. These were developed collectively and gradually integrated into the repertoire as the group toured in the wake of The Well. “The new album title also refers to the view of things not being linear,” says Gustavsen. “The modernistic notion of linear progress is dead... But still we want to move in creative circles or spirals, coming back to musical and spiritual issues from ever-new angles, developing the musical approach or ideology with – hopefully – a deeper insight, a deeper set of experiences and skills.”

Ulrich Drechsler Quartet Feat. Tord Gustavsen - Humans & Places (2006)

Humans & Places follows Drechsler's loving tribute to Thelonious Monk on the 2004 disc The Monk In All Of Us, where his bass clarinet conjured the spirit of Eric Dolphy. On this quartet recording his music directs itself more towards Bill Evans than Dolphy. Perhaps the influence of Norwegian pianist Tord Gustavsen is what imparts this music with the stark emotions you would expect from Manfred Eicher's ECM sessions.

Gustavsen has now gained international recognition for his two ECM releases, Changing Places (2003) and The Ground (2005). His economy of playing, a kind of "less is more style, influences Drechsler's compositions and approach. Or probably it is more correct to state these two kindred spirits embody this sparse and beautiful presentation naturally.

Tord Gustavsen: piano;

Tord Gustavsen Trio - Silence Way (2009)

Before he started his trio, Norwegian pianist Tord Gustavsen, born 5 October 1970 in Oslo, Norway, was already very much involved in his country's jazz scene. Contributions to releases by groups like the Silje Nergaard Band, the Ulrich Drechsler Quartet, and others had already helped to establish him as one of Norway's top players. In 2003, signed to ECM, Gustavsen, along with drummer Jarle Vespestad and bassist Harald Johnsen, released Changing Places, which was followed in 2005 with Ground. Two years later, Being There, what Gustavsen called the completion of the trilogy, hit shelves. In 2010, Gustavsen delivered Restored, Returned on ECM, featuring vocalist Kristin Asbjørnsen.
