Johnny Griffin & John Taylor Trio - Cheltenham Jazz Fest (1997)

Cheltenham Jazz Festival
Everyman Theatre, Cheltenham
April 6, 1997

Johnny Griffin, who passed away in 2008 at 80, was from Chicago and his speed, control and harmonic acuity made him one of the most talented American jazz musicians of his generation, spending most of his career in Europe. He was described by The Times as "the supreme ballad player on tenor". John Taylor, who died on stage in July 2015 at 72 from heart attack, emerged as one of the most promising newcomers in the British jazz generation of the late 1960s. As one of the house pianists at Ronnie Scott’s in the 70s, he inventively drew on the methods of Evans and Hancock. His diverse involvements nurtured an original composer’s voice and one that would be as widely acclaimed as his playing. On this set, they both swing as marvel.

BBC Jazz On 3 - John Taylor Tribute (2015)

Jazz on 3 pays tribute to pianist and composer John Taylor, who died in July, aged 72, with key performances drawn from the Jazz on 3 archives and tributes from students, collaborators and musical friends.

A leading figure on the British jazz scene, known for his lyricism, for his contemporary approach to harmony and for his work as an educator and mentor, Taylor rose to prominence in the 1960s playing with the likes of John Surman, John Dankworth and Cleo Laine.

As the house pianist at Ronnie Scott's in the 1970s and subsequently as a bandleader and recording artist for labels such as ECM, he worked with a host of international stars, among them Jan Garbarek and Peter Erskine. But he is perhaps best known for his partnership with trumpeter Kenny Wheeler - a musical relationship that lasted until Wheeler's own death in 2014 and that must surely count as one of the most important in the history of British jazz.

John Taylor - Ambleside Days In Koln (2013)

"…Taylor played as if the piano were his orchestra, always intriguing and filled with sumptuous chords, groove-alerting cross-rhythms and nimble lines. His playing is strikingly original and immediate, as if the piano has revealed all kinds of secrets to him that are kept from most other musicians…" (Peter Hum, Ottawa Citizen)

Gwilym Simcock Trio - Liverpool (2011)

Gwilym Simcock / piano
Yuri Goloubev / bass
Asaf Sirkis / drums

A graduate of Londons Royal Academy of Music, multi award winning virtuoso pianist and composer Gwilym Simcocks work blurs the boundaries between jazz and classical music. I feel confident that Simcock already deserves to occupy the inner circle of the great contemporary pianists along with Mehldau, Jarrett, and Rubalcaba. (David Kane, Cadence Magazine, USA)

Simcock, Garland, Sirkis - Lighthouse (2012)

With Lighthouse, saxophonist Tim Garland, pianist Gwilym Simcock and percussionist Asaf Sirkis make the move to completely egalitarian collective. It's also the first album to feature the trio without any additional guests. Garland's Lighthouse Trio first came together on the saxophonist's If the Sea Replied (Sirocco, 2005), an ambitious song cycle that—in addition to including mates from his impro-folk Lammas and Acoustic Triangle, which by that time also featured Simcock—was scored for members of the Northern Sinfonia Orchestra. Libra (Global Mix, 2009) was even more far-reaching—a double-disc set sporting an even larger cast of characters. But the emphasis was always on the core trio—and, with the exception of three jazz covers on Libra—Garland's compositional pen. With Lighthouse, the trio's name reflects its more democratic nature, and in particular the emergence of the twenty-something Simcock as a leader in his own right.

Tim Garland: soprano and tenor saxophones, bass clarinet;
Gwilym Simock: piano, melodica (1);
Asaf Sirkis: drums, percussion, hang drum.
