Dave Brubeck Quartet - At Newport (2009)

It's been 50 years since Dave Brubeck's Time Out, and its crossover hits "Take Five" and "Blue Rondo a la Turk," first appeared in record shops. Brubeck was plenty famous before then — he had already been invited to the Newport Jazz Festival a handful of times — and his musical output continued to evolve afterward. But that album is a large reason why he was invited to George Wein's Newport productions, as much as ever in this 50th anniversary year. What's more, Brubeck says he still loves playing that material. And even at almost 89 of age, and largely confined to a wheelchair, he still tours frequently with a quartet styled after that which recorded Time Out. (Dave passed away on December 5th, 2012)

Dave Brubeck Quartet - At Newport Jazz Festival (1960)

Brubeck's appearance at the 1960 Newport Jazz Festival came at a time when "Take Five," the most requested song from Time Out, still dominated radioplay and sales figures for that landmark album had surpassed the million mark. No wonder, then, that the Brubeck quartet's June 30th appearance was met with such an air of anticipation for these new darlings of jazz.

Dave Brubeck - On Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz (1993)

His two older brothers, Henry and Howard, studied to become musicians, but Dave had no intentions of following them, although he took lessons from his mother. He could not read sheet music, but played well enough that this deficiency went mostly unnoticed. Later, as a student at the College of the Pacific, he initially studied veterinary science and was nearly expelled when one of his professors discovered that he couldn't read music. The college agreed to let Brubeck graduate only after he promised never to teach piano. This Piano Jazz was recorded in 1993 with no more trace of it today while the second appearance of Brubeck was held in 1997 (and broadcast Jan. 18) before an audience at Borders Books and Music in Washington.

JALC Orchestra - Reimagining Brubeck (2014)

The late pianist Dave Brubeck left jazz with incredible performances, recordings and advocacy —  as well as a large body of compositions. His iconic music is reimagined by members of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. Jazz Night in America explores various Brubeck compositions, discussing the decisions the arrangers made when approaching the material. Also, we unearth a rare recording from Brubeck's personal archive of him singing with Carmen McRae.

2 Generations Of Brubeck - At Newport (1975)

After disbanding his classic quartet (with alto sax great Paul Desmond, bassist Eugene Wright and drummer Joe Morello) in 1967, pianist-composer Dave Brubeck went on to form an adventurous new quartet with noted baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan, bassist Jack Six and drummer Alan Dawson. This unit stayed together until 1972. The following year, the forward-thinking Brubeck formed his Two Generations of Brubeck band with his Woodstock generation sons Chris, Darius and Dan. They released their eponymous debut on Atlantic in 1973 and followed up with 1974's Brother, the Great Spirit Made Us All. They performed material from both albums at this July 2, 1975 appearance at Carnegie Hall for the Newport Jazz Festival in New York.

Dave Brubeck Quartet - Live in London (1966)

A complete never before released 1966 concert by the Dave Brubeck Quartet with Paul Desmond recorded in London. The material for the show consisted of versions of classic songs like “Take Five”, as well as tunes rarely recorded by the quartet, such as “Out of Nowhere” and the group’s only existing live recording of Brubeck’s own composition, “Softly, William, Softly”.
