Sunday Night 6:30 pm - 2 sets

Notes from the original uploader:
A beautiful Fall day in New Jersey... A house of about 100 people to see Bill Charlap solo. We sat to the rear of Bill, so were able to see his keyboard work.  Bill played two sets of The Great American Songbook. He really has a great touch when it comes to these classics.

Renee Rosnes & Bill Charlap - On Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz (2008)

It's a rare thing to have three pianists at three pianos in one studio. But given the marriage of keyboard masters Bill Charlap and Renee Rosnes, host Marian McPartland thought it was a perfect opportunity to expand the Piano Jazz format with two of today's most gifted players as her guests.Charlap is one of the finest interpreters of  the american songbook and Rosnes is a modern jazz wizard. They join McPartland in this 2008 session and here after for the music only without the usual conversations between performances.

A NPR PRESENTATION: Bill Charlap Trio With Anat Cohen And Bob Wilber, Live In Concert: Newport Jazz 2013

Pianist Bill Charlap's trio is about as quintessentially "New York elegant" as it gets. At Newport, it's been drafted to accompany the reedman Bob Wilber, an esteemed elder who specializes in classic jazz styles. (You might specialize too if you were mentored by Sidney Bechet.) The presence of Newport favorite Anat Cohen makes this something of a clarinet summit: a refreshing little hint of traditional jazz at a festival that's become a lot about the modern lately. ON THE SPOT: Bill Charlap

The Gerry Mulligan Songbook (1997)

This excellent CD features pianists Bill Charlap and Ted Rosenthal, who both played stints with Gerry Mulligan; bassist Dean Johnson and drummer Ron Vincent (who conceived this session) are also Mulligan alumni. What is unusual about this Mulligan tribute is that it covers his compositions without reeds of any kind. Mulligan was an excellent pianist (he played some piano with his groups in the 1950s and '60s and stuck to piano exclusively during his guest appearance on Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz); the give and take between Rosenthal and Charlap captures the essence of their former leader's works. The two pianists play together without their rhythm section on the jaunty "Walkin' Shoes" and the lesser-known but dramatic ballad "Curtains." Ron Vincent's crisp brushwork is added to the pianos during "Bark for Barksdale." Rosenthal's feature with the trio is the melancholy "Lonesome Boulevard," while "Noblesse," a relatively obscure ballad, is Charlap's trio feature. The remaining tracks utilize the full quartet; "Line for Lyons" and "Wood On Wood" are among the choice cuts. Perhaps the quartet will choose to explore "Good Neighbor Thelonious" and "K-4 Pacific" on a follow-up session. A chat by the musicians, titled "Jazzspeak," concludes the CD. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide

Bill Charlap Trio - Back Again At The Village Vanguard (2008)

One of today's most popular mainstream pianists, Charlap delights in selecting the most attractive standards of yesteryear and rendering them with tactful, warmly familiar gestures. He brings his celebrated trio back to a favorite downtown haunt.

The Village Vanguard is a 123 seat Mecca for jazz in the heart of Greenwich Village in New York. Charlap describes it as "Carnegie Hall to us. It’s the greatest listening room in jazz." And that feeling is captured to a tee in this excellent live recording (fm) done in 2008.

The Bill Charlap Trio is indeed a trio, not a king and two pawns, but three very talented musicians that form a whole that is at least equal to if not greater than the parts.
