Clint Eastwood - On Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz (2004)

Clint Eastwood is best known for his work in Hollywood, but he's also a composer and jazz aficionado. Combining his love of both art forms, he's included classic jazz recordings in his films — including Play Misty for Me, which features the famous Errol Garner ballad. On this episode of Piano Jazz, Eastwood discusses his love of Garner's music and reminisces about seeing Charlie Parker perform live. Host Marian McPartland gives treatments of Eastwood's compositions "Claudia's Theme" and "Doe Eyes."

Bill Evans - On Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz (1979)

This is one of the finest of all the Marian McPartland Piano Jazz radio shows. Bill Evans (less than two years before his death) not only plays in prime form and talks a little about his career but explains to McPartland in detail his approach to playing piano. One gets to know not only Bill Evans the musician but the man, too. Musically Evans performs a brief "Waltz for Debbie," "All of You," and "Reflections in D"; McPartland plays "While We're Young"; and they duet on five numbers, including "In Your Own Sweet Way," "Days of Wine and Roses," and "I Love You." This is a special show well worth hearing several times.

Michel Petrucciani - On Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz (1987)

Born with the genetic disease osteogenesis imperfecta, he only stood at three feet. But with an extraordinary talent, Michel Petrucciani has benn one of the greatest jazz pianists of all time. Petrucciani was raised in a highly musical Italo-French family and developed a love for piano at age 3 upon seeing Duke Ellington perform on television. Less than a year later, at age 4, Petrucciani began his studies in piano. Overcoming the obstacles of his genetic disease included building aids to reach the piano pedals, and he played his first professional concert at age 13. By age 18, he'd moved to the U.S., where he began performing with Charles Lloyd. Gigs with Wayne Shorter, Jim Hall and Dizzy Gillespie would follow. Petrucciani joined host Marian McPartland for this program in 1986, shortly after becoming the first French musician to sign with the prestigious Blue Note label. Originally broadcast Jan. 22, 1987.

Keith Jarrett - On Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz (2006)

Host Marian McPartland tried for years to line-up elusive pianist Keith Jarrett for a Piano Jazz session. Following his stellar performance at Carnegie Hall in 2005, McPartland confronted the elusive performer and convinced him to put in an appearance on her show. The Allentown, Pa., native graciously invited McPartland and a small crew to his home studio, a converted barn next to his 18th-century farmhouse. The intimate setting and the chemistry between the two made for an exhilarating session. Originally recorded Sept. 8, 2006.

Joanne Brackeen - On Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz (2005)

Joanne Brackeen has been called the "Picasso of jazz piano," a nickname that encompasses her adventurous style and visionary approach. A free spirit since childhood, Brackeen was lured to her parents' grand piano at an early age, though actual piano lessons were short-lived. Her frustrations with formal music education meant that Brackeen had to teach herself, which she did by transcribing and memorizing Charlie Parker and Bud Powell tunes. That work laid the foundation for the amazing chops on display in this Piano Jazz session. Brackeen's admiration for the host is evident throughout the show. It's certainly reflected in her performances of the McPartland original, Ambience. Originally recorded Aug. 15, 2005.

Ellis Marsalis & Marcus Roberts - Duo Piano Rehearsal (1991)

Two perspectives on contemporary jazz piano came into sharp focus at WHYY Studios in Philadelphia on this mid-February day of 1991. Seated at opposite ends of a pair of large Steinways, Marcus Roberts and Ellis Marsalis performed a program of solo and duo piano improvisations whose source material was the rich library of American jazz and pop songs, and whose style ranged from stride piano to free floating bebop. The interaction between the two players--separated in age by more than three decades--was surprisingly facile. Roberts spent a few years as the piano mainstay in the rhythm section of Wynton Marsalis' band, and the indirect linkage seems to have resulted in a genuine musical empathy between the elder Marsalis and the younger pianist.
