Harold Mabern - Somewhere Over The Rainbow (2006)

Harold Mabern is one of a number of American jazz artists who have developed a strong following in Japan, resulting in regular opportunities to record for the Japanese Venus label. This trio date with bassist Dwayne Burno and drummer Willie Jones III (the latter sticking mainly to brushes) covers ten songs from the vast Harold Arlen songbook, though not all of them are well-known standards. Mabern's bouncing, breezy opener is a fun-filled take of "Over the Rainbow," followed by a gospel-inflected soul-jazz treatment of "A Sleepin' Bee" that prominently features Burno. His blues-drenched take of "Blues in the Night" is harmonically rich, while Mabern's jovial treatment of "I've Got the World on a String" swings like mad. The pianist adds a hip Latin vamp to introduce a soul-jazz-infused arrangement of "This Time the Dream's on Me." "Savannah" is not one of Arlen's better-known tunes, but Mabern's chart sets it up as a calypso before seguing into hard bop, with Jones getting several breaks on sticks. (Ken Dryden)

Graillier-Cullaz-Goubert - It Was A Very Good Night (2006)

Serge Forté Trio - Oscar A Tribute (2008)

Serge Forté is an experience one should grasp, and often. His ivory “Take the A-Train” is nothing less than meticulousness musicianship; for his implementation of his Oscar Peterson influence, has a very precise vision. Forte seeds the dramatic flair of his 2008 tribute release from Ella Productions Oscar, by offering an honoring perspective to jazz icon, Oscar Peterson.

Serge Forté, Jazz pianist, composer, arranger, born 1st May 1960 in Tunis. At 18 years old, studying musicology in Lyon, he discovers Jazz and listen to all masters with avidity. He teached classical piano to pay his studies, playing with local groups also. Professor at CIM, Paris, from 1988 to 1990, Serge Forté recorded VAÏNA latin jazz compositions, with in bonus a duo with Michel Petrucciani, followed by many concerts as 1st parts of Miles Davis in Poitiers, Stan Getz and Michel Petrucciani at Festival Heineken...

In 1992, Serge recorded LA VIE EN BLEU, on French Songs , and then MOSAÏQUE in 1994.
Working on the play of Oscar Peterson, Thelonious Monk, Erroll Garner, Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett, Phineas Newborn, Lennie Tristano, taking some distance from his first latin mood and going deeper in his technique and harmonic play.

John Lewis Trio - Live At Tanglewood (1996)

Jazz historian Francis Davis once wrote, "With the advent of bop, the soloist reigned supreme, and the ensemble had some catching up to do. John Lewis was one of the musicians who consciously or unconsciously set out to restore the balance."

Lewis says he was indeed very conscious of what he was doing when he adopted classical European forms and structures into his jazz repertoire. "It was conscious," he said. "I was very conscious of what I was doing. But it wasn't my goal. My goal was to make music I wanted to hear."

These days, the Modern Jazz Quartet is "semi-retired," according to Lewis. After Connie Kaye passed away last year, Percy Heath's brother Albert joined the group, which plays a few times a year. In the meantime, Lewis keeps busy with a number of his own projects. He is too busy to teach, but lately he has been working with various sinfoniettas, one based in Bellingham, Wash., and the other at the Manhattan School of Music in New York. Jean-Michel Pilc Trio - In Paris (2008)

(click on cover to enlarge)

NYU Jazz Piano Faculty Jean-Michel Pilc was born in Paris, France in 1960. He has performed with many jazz icons of American and European jazz music including Roy Haynes, Michael Brecker, Dave Liebman, Jean Toussaint, Rick Margitza, Martial Solal, Michel Portal, Daniel Humair, Marcus Miller, Kenny Garrett, Lenny White, fellow NYU Jazz Faculty member Chris Potter, John Abercrombie, Lew Soloff and Richard Bona. He has also worked with Harry Belafonte, as his musical director and pianist. "Mr. Pilc seems to have dropped from the sky fully formed, with technique and his ideas in place. He is a physical and densely harmonic player, a splashy stunner who also has a Rubik's-cube mind for chord substitutions." (Ben Ratliff, New York Times)

David Hazeltine Trio - Cleopatra's Dream (2006)

The capable New York City-based pianist David Hazeltine dives head first into the music of Bud Powell on these 2005 sessions with veteran bassist George Mraz and drummer Billy Drummond. His straight-ahead interpretation of "Tempus Fugit" is full of energy yet without the quirky stop-and-go flavor of many recordings. "Wail" is a light-hearted affair, while the trio saunters through an easygoing take of "Bouncing with Bud." Hazeltine's dexterity is put to the test with a brisk rendition of "Dance of the Infidels," while his lyrical approach to the ballad "I'll Keep Loving You" also merits praise. Some of Powell's less frequently performed numbers are also explored, including the playful "Danceland" that showcases Hazeltine's partners at length, along with a breezy Latin-flavored setting of "Cleopatra's Dream." The CD wraps with "This One's for Bud," a fine salute to Powell by the pianist. (Ken Dryden)

Denny Zeitlin Trio - In Concert (2006)

“Merging a 1960s-‘70s jazz sensibility with a profound awareness of classical-piano history and technique, Zeitlin remains a gloriously unconventional player. In general, he pursues an unlikely array of musical idioms, apparently oblivious to musical fashion or trend…exquisitely, uniquely Zeitlin.” CHICAGO TRIBUNE

This live album was recorded over a five-year period between 2001 and 2006 at the Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles and the Outpost in Albuquerque. Denny Zeitlin and his trio stretch way out, let tunes flow according to the dictates of particular evenings in California and New Mexico, and give everyone space to blow. In Concert is extravagant and spontaneous as only live recordings can be, but never feels loose or rough.(Thomas Conrad)

David Gazarov Trio - In Stuttgart (2000)

The composer and pianist, David Gazarov, was born in Baku, Azerbaijan, to Armenian parents. David's father was responsible for directing the country’s radio jazz big band at the time. At the age of four, David started his piano education and took lessons from the Shostakovich-disciple, Elmira Nazirova. From his recital performances, David immediately was considered a child prodigy. His father Eduard Gazarov encouraged the young pianist’s interest in American jazz and provided him with the sheet music of famous jazzmen. As Azerbaijan was governed by a communist regime, it was nearly impossible to obtain music of such “capitalistic” artists; thus the family was forced to buy records from international tourists at astronomical prices. Through these records and listening illicitly to Willis Conovers’ radio broadcasts, both father and son acquired their theoretical and practical knowledge of jazz by ear. In 1991, the virtuoso was discovered by a German record label and relocated to Munich. David’s current position as pianist of the renowned trio, the Klazz Brothers, proves that he will continue to devote himself to the unique crossover projects of classical music and jazz.(Grandmontagne Music)

Bennett/Brubeck - The White House Session Live 1962 (2013)

For the first time, the complete Tony Bennett and Dave Brubeck performance from the White House Seminar American Jazz Concert, held on August 28, 1962.  With the Washington Monument as the evening's backdrop--the show was moved from its original Rose Garden location to the larger Sylvan Theater grounds nearby to accommodate the crowd--the concert was an end-of-summer event thrown by the John F. Kennedy White House for college students who'd been working as interns in the nation's capital.

This is a long-lost piece of jazz mythology, wrongly labelled in the vaults and only unearthed by Columbia last winter. It was recorded live when the mainstream impact of Take Five was still fresh, and Bennett had just released his famous signature song I Left My Heart in San Francisco. Bennett jams with Brubeck on four unrehearsed songs, while five others feature the singer with his own trio, and the first half-hour showcases the Brubeck quartet, notably on a thrillingly fast Take Five. Bennett's jazz skills weren't to be fully honed for at least another decade, when changing public tastes led him to reinvent himself with Bill Evans and others – and some listeners might therefore find the operatic, on-a-roll exuberance of his 1962 persona over the top. (A boogie version of One for My Baby feels like a rash decision.) But Brubeck's chord-blasting drive has an infectious relish on a flying There Will Never Be Another You, and Bennett and the Brubeck rhythm section elegantly shuffle together on That Old Black Magic. The four Brubeck Quartet tracks are the real treasures, though, with the leader's rippling Chopin diversions on Thank You (Dziekuje) and the Latin-inflected 5/4-time Castilian Blues showing just why this group took the jazz world by storm.(The Guardian)

Jutta Hipp - At The Hickory House vol 1 (1956)

At the Hickory House is a thoroughly appealing collection of lightly swinging small-combo jazz that draws equally from hard bop and soul-jazz. There's a soulful lilt to Jutta Hipp's playing that keeps it engaging and enjoyable. The rhythm section of Peter Ind (bass) and Ed Thigpen (drums) largely stay out of the way, letting Hipp dictate the tempo and mood of the pieces, and she has a knack for creating infectious, swinging interpretations of jazz and pop standards that are enjoyable and easy to listen to. Vol. 1 contains such staples as "Dear Old Stockholm," "Billie's Bounce," "Mad About the Boy," "Ain't Misbehavin'" and "These Foolish Things," all of which are performed with verve and style, making the record a wonderful little gem.

Sonata No. 1 in C minor moderato swing theme bring a lot of memories from more than 25 years ago, so it is my favorite. Barry Harris Trio - The Last Time I Saw Paris (2002)

Barry Harris is an Internationally renowned Jazz Pianist, Composer and Teacher. Dr. Harris is the recipient of an Honorary Doctorate from Northwestern University. He has received the Living Jazz Legacy award from the Mid-Atlantic Arts Association, and an American Jazz Masters Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts.

"One of the major bop pianists of the last half of the 20th century, Barry Harris has long had the ability to sound very close to Bud Powell, yet he can also do convincing impressions of Thelonious Monk and has his own style within the bop idiom. He was an important part of the Detroit jazz scene of the 1950s, and has been a jazz educator since that era. Harris recorded his first set as a leader while in 1958, and moved to New York in 1960, where he spent a short period with Cannonball Adderley's Quintet. He also recorded with Dexter Gordon, Illinois Jacquet, Yusef Lateef, and Hank Mobley, and was with Coleman Hawkins off and on throughout the decade (including Hawk's declining years). In the 1970s, Harris was on two of Sonny Stitt's finest records (Tune Up and Constellation), and made many recordings in a variety of settings for Xanadu. Barry Harris has mostly worked with his trio since the mid-'70s, and he has recorded as a leader for Argo (1958), Riverside, Prestige, MPS, Xanadu, and Red." - Scott Yanow

Warren Bernhardt - So Real (2003)

There are two ways of explaining the CD title, So Real: It's the only original tune by pianist Bernhardt, or the fact that not one edit exists on the album. Eight of the nine cuts were first takes. Bernhardt recorded "Autumn Leaves" again because he was dissatisfied with the tempo.

Considering the "time is money" concept that short-changes so many sessions, DMP must be as delighted as Bernhardt, bassist Jay Anderson and drummer Peter Erskine. They have all created a memorable collection of chamber jazz: intellectual swing, intelligent interaction, tasteful choices, dynamic self-control, with stereo separation and clarity seldom heard these days. Espen Eriksen Trio - What Took You So Long (2012)

What Took You So Long does everything that a good sophomore disc should: it strengthens the chemistry honed by Eriksen with bassist Lars Tormud Jenset and drummer Andreas Bye, the result of touring opportunities that stemmed from the success of You Had Me At Goodbye, including a successful stop at Malaysia's Penang Island Jazz Festival in the fall of 2011; it further defines the trio's voice, which is predicated on lyrical intent and restrained but undeniable virtuosity; and it demonstrates Eriksen's growth as a composer. What Took You So Long is a worthy follow-up to Espen Eriksen Trio's debut, and a harbinger, no doubt, of even better things to come.
