Keep Calm And Eat Sushi...

Oh heerlijk hè? Sushi? Zoveel verschillende manieren om deze klaar te maken, met vlees, vis, groente, zalig! Voor mijn volgende kaart werd ik dus hierdoor geïnspireerd, had sushi gemaakt en zag in de la nog een paar gekleurde eetstokjes liggen die ik nou niet bepaald bij m'n Japanse tafel vond passen (want ja, ik vind zelf zwart met rood gecombineerd toch wel het mooiste ;-) En omdat ik zo'n slechte ben in het opruimen (lees weggooien) van dingen, besloot ik er maar een kaartje mee te maken met een afbeelding die ik op Deviantart heb gevonden en heb ingekleurd met potloden en stiften. De vorm van de kaart lijkt zo wel wat op een kimono, toch?

Do you like sushi? I think it's absolute bliss! So many different ways to prepare this, with meat, fish or vegetables. Yummy! I found my inspiration in this delicate dish. I made some sushi and found some green coloured chopsticks in one of my kitchen drawers. But since I wasn't going to use them (since I love to set my Japanese table in black combined with red) and I'm really lousy at throwing things away I decided to make a card with a lovely image found on Deviantart (coloured with pencils and markers). I tried to make the card look a bit like a kimono:

Ben normaal niet zo van 'cute', maar zo af en toe vind ik het wel leuk om te doen ;-)

I'm usually not that much into 'cute', but every now and then I like creating such cards ;-)

Trading Envelopes

Het was alweer een tijdje geleden dat mijn vriendin Odetta en ik een swap hadden gedaan, dus moest er weer ééntje worden bedacht. Dit keer mocht ik het thema bepalen en ik heb gekozen voor 'envelop'.  Ik heb gekozen om de mijne van borduurstof te maken, gevoerd en al, dus de naaimachine mocht weer aan het werk :-)  Heb hem verder bestempeld en afgewerkt met kant, pareltjes en er enkele bestempelde tags ingestoken. De bloem heb ik volgens mijn tutorial hier gemaakt:
It's been a while since my friend Odetta and I had done a swap, so we needed to come up with a new one. This time I was allowed to pick the theme and I chose 'envelopes'. I made mine out of embroidery fabric, even added inner lining to it so I had my sewing machine working again ;-) I stamped it, added some lace, pearls and stamped tags. I made the flower according to my tutorial here:

En dit is Odetta's geweldige bijdrage, een beschermengeltje op een envelop gevouwen van gemstone cardstock van Bazzill en voorzien van prachtige bloemen die zijn gemaakt met de stansen van Marianne Design. Is het geen schatje? Er zit een onwijs mooie glans over het blauwe papier. En die geweldig zelfgemaakte stickpin is superchic!

And here's Odetta's fabulous contribution, a guardian angel sitting on an envelope made of gemstone cardstock (Bazzill). With beautiful flowers that are made with dies from Marianne Design. Isn't he the sweetest? The blue envelope has a gorgeous shimmer and don't you just love that DIY stickpin?

En net zoals ieder jaar sturen wij onze Chinese buren van een paar deuren verderop een kaart om hen gelukkig nieuwjaar te wensen, want dat wordt binnenkort gevierd. Heb voor hen een lampion gemaakt:

Vandaag neem ik jullie mee naar Azië, ik heb een mix van Japanse en Chinese elementen in mijn kaart verwerkt, de Japanse geisha - een afbeelding van Deviantart (Photofreak37) - en een bekende Chinese quote op een ingestoken tag. Sorry voor de slechte fotokwaliteit, ik heb vanmorgen wel tig foto's gemaakt maar ik krijg 'm gewoon niet goed, pech! Het wordt hopelijk toch wel een gezellig zondag ;-)
Today I'm taking you on a trip to Asia, my card is a mixture of Japanese and Chinese elements, the Japanese geisha - an image found on Deviantart (Photofreak37) - and a famous Chinese quote written on tag tucked inside the card. I'm so sorry for the bad photo quality, I've made like a zillion photos this morning and none of them were good, bad luck! I'll hopefully be a good Sunday for you girls anyway ;-)

Memories Of My Father

Vandaag zou mijn vader 81 geworden zijn, helaas is hij al bijna 5 jaar niet meer bij ons... Deze dag is zijn geboortedag, hij is in Indonesië geboren en in 1958 naar Nederland gekomen waar hij mijn moeder leerde kennen. Omdat het roerige tijden waren (hij had een Engels-Franse vader en een Javaanse moeder) duurde het tot 1977 tot hij weer terug kon keren naar het land van zijn roots. Ik was destijds 11 toen ik voor het eerst kennis maakte met dit immens grote en wonderschone land en raakte meteen in de ban. Stille Kracht? Ongetwijfeld. Eenieder die wel eens in Azië is geweest, weet dat je er nooit meer los van komt... We zijn nogal eens wat keren terug geweest, ook na mijn huwelijk; mijn mannetje ging gewoon mee en ja hoor, ook hij was in trance. Omdat Bali één van de eilanden was waar papa zo wég van was, wou ik hem vandaag eren met een Balinese offerande. Deze offerandes bestaan grotendeels uit bloemen en wierook en vaak doet men er sigaretten, geld, koekjes, snoep bij. Ze zijn bedoeld om de voorouders te eren maar ook de aarde en de zee. Ik ben begonnen met een origineel Balinees schaaltje:
Today my father would have been 81, unfortunately he's no longer with us since he died almost 5 years ago... This day is his birthday, he was born in Indonesia and came to the Netherlands where he met my mother back in 1958. Because times were turbulent (he had an English-French father and a Javanese mother) it was not until 1977 that he was able to return to the country of his roots. At that time I was 11 when I first made acquaintance with this huge and immensely beautiful country; I was captivated on the spot. Silent forces at work? Undoubtedly. If you've ever been to Asia before you know that it will remain in your blood forever... We've returned several times, even after my marriage; my DH just went along and yes, he was in trance, too. Because Bali was one of the islands my father adored, I wanted to honour him today with a Balinese offering. These offerings usually exist of flowers, incense and often cigarettes, money, cookies and candy are added. They're intended to honour the forefathers, but also the earth and the sea. I started out with an original Balinese basket:

Daarna ben ik met het versieren begonnen, heb hiervoor met allerlei stanzen bloemen en bladeren gemaakt, van schelpen (op het strand van Bali gevonden) een vlinder gemaakt. Het geld is al echt heel oud, want 2,5 rupiah zou nu omgerekend zo'n € 0,0002 zijn. Kun je nagaan wat inflatie doet!

After that I started embellishing; I used all kinds of dies to make flowers and leaves, turned some shells (found on Bali Beach) into a butterfly. The money is quite old already, because 2,5 rupiah nowadays would be roughly 

€ 0,0002. A remarkable occurence, inflation!

 

Een klein houten slippertje erbij, de postzegel komt uit mijn kinderverzameling, vond ik onlangs in mijn oude postzegelalbum terug. Het woord Tjempaka Kuning betekent trouwens gele frangipani (en dat is weer de nationale bloem van Bali):

I added a small wooden slipper, the stamp is from my childhood collection, I recently found my stamp album again. By the way the word Tjempaka Kuning means yellow frangipani (which is Bali's national flower):

Van de week werd ik blij verrast door Odetta (Somerset Garden); ze stuurde me nl. een stempel op met de afbeelding van haar opa, oma en moeder als klein meisje. Odetta en ik delen allebei onze Aziatische afkomst, zij heeft Thais bloed, ik Indisch. Ik vond het zo'n eer dat ik met haar familiestempel iets mocht maken, ik wou uiteraard wel in het orientaalse sfeertje blijven en heb uiteindelijk een muurhanger voor haar gemaakt. Met wierook erbij!

Last week I received happy mail from  Odetta (Somerset Garden); she sent me a rubber stamp with the image of her grandparents and her mother when she was little. Odetta and I both have Asian ancestors, she's of Thai origin, I have Indonesian blood. I felt so honoured that she allowed me to create something with her family stamp; of course I didn't want to steer away from the oriental theme and so I decided to make this wall hanger for her. With incense sticks!
