THE SAM RIVERS SESSIONOGRAPHY

Today I would like to draw your attention to a book.
When I say book it's actually an understatement for the achievement
that Rick Lopez did in collecting all the data and information.
He still hopes for a normal life. Check it out!

The Sam Rivers Sessionography AVAILABLE HERE : : : Gofundme-Sam Rivers Sessionography
768 pages + nearly 600 images, many got from The RivBea Archive.
This is an independent publishing project—also contact ricklopez@bb10k.com for other options.

“A dizzying, stunning achievement of research and scholarship. ... A joyful, sometimes psychedelic experience.”
Mike Chamberlain review, allaboutjazz.com
“A Rosetta Stone of insight, and a well-deserved and worthy tribute to an overlooked giant of the music.”
Taylor Ho Bynum
“What an incredible piece of work. It’s really something else. Informative and entertaining. ... Anticipating hours of joy.”
Barry Altschul
“Absolutely mind-blowing! So great!” —Mats Gustafsson
“An essential resource, a trail map for a rare and beautiful landscape of sounds.” —Larry Blumenfeld
“A tremendous document. ... This book is powerful.” —Jason Moran
“Lopez’s Sam Rivers sessionography is state of the art.” —Lewis Porter
“Rick Lopez’s book is by no means a biography. It’s not a discography either, and it’s not a photo documentation. And yet somehow it is everything at the same time.”
Wolfram Knauer review, Jazzinstitut Darmstadt (Jan 2023)
“Rick Lopez has done it again!” —James Brandon Lewis

DAVE HOLLAND QUARTET & ANTHONY BRAXTON QUARTET "ANTIBES '74 & CHATEAUVALLON '73"

Two excellent concert films. (maybe the two shows aren't complete but surely worth your attention)

The first group is obviously the quartet which recorded the wonderful album "Conference of the Birds" for ECM. The album was recorded on November 30, 1972 in New York. So the concert in France was more than a half year later. Several themes of the LP are easily discernible.
---

For the second ensemble I've found the following description.

Details from Coda 12/73 p.34.
"They played a suite especially written for this occasion. A piece that showed some of the aspects in the music of the multidirectional Anthony Braxton. Wheeler and Braxton matched each other beautifully, Wheeler is a musician who has much in common with Braxton, an intellectual player with a cool sound and a good ear for Braxton's intricate written lines. Their performance ended with a bebop-like tune, and drummer Bobo Shaw (from Black Artists Group from St. Louis, BAG) who throughout the piece had revealed himself as a very musical and inventive drummer, kept the music on fire." (Ib Skovgaard Petersen)

[Some discographies claim other days (23rd f.e.) for the Braxton Quartet but I stick with what's given in the TV production, although the menu gives 1974 which is - obviously - incorrect]

During this concert we have the first performances of Braxton's "Composition No. 23B" and "Composition No. 23D".

Sam Rivers Trio - live in Foggia 30 April 1980

This is a repost of sorts of a file posted way back on this blog. In the comments section to the original post, Rick Lopez made the very valid point that Sam's scat singing towards the end didn't sound, shall we say, entirely authentic. So I ran it through Audacity to see if anything could be done about it. I made two versions, one with 15 percent speed reduction and one with 20 percent. Listening back, the 20 percent sounded a bit soggy, so I decided to stick with the 15 percent. In other words, this runs at about 85 percent of the original speed. I can't say if I have hit the nail right on the head, but at least it comes off more plausible, and in any case, your ears are the best judge. One more technical note, this was originally posted as a high grade mp3 and is reposted in the flac format to prevent further lossiness.

What we have here is a live concert in Foggia, Italy, on 30 April 1980 with Sam Rivers on multiple instruments and vocals, Dave Holland on bass and Steve Ellington on drums. As for the gig, it's marvellous, really a stayer, one to come back to. Sam Rivers starts out on tenor, switches to soprano, continues on flute interspersed with a bit of vocalising towards the end. In all, the piece runs for 78:28, so one consequence of lowering the speed is you get at least ten minutes extra of Sam and the gang. Can't be bad, eh?

UPCOMING & RECENT RELEASES XVIII

May will be a good month for those who still buy records. Once again Nobusiness records will publish several exciting titles.

Obviously they have started a reissue program of archival recordings of Sam Rivers. The first volume will be a trio with Norman Connors & Cecil McBee, this trio previously has recorded the fantastic « Stream »
http://nobusinessrecords.com/emanation-sam-rivers.html

Another great reissue is this obscure session recorded by Sunny Murray in 1994 with two musicians that comes from the alternative rock. Previously published on lp in a very limited quantity (less than 30 copies), it will be reissued with more music.

Last but not least there is a reissue from a fantastic Detail session done in 1982. (Previously released on vinyl as Okhela) If you have missed the cd on FMR published almost one year ago, don’t miss this one.

JEANNE LEE ‎– CONSPIRACY (SEEDS RECORDS, EARTHFORMS RECORDS, 1975)

I have listened to this many more times since the last post, but the transition in Sundance from the spoken-word poem to the dance between Jack Gregg's bass and Jeanne Lee's vocal is still spine-tingling.

Reggie Workman-Summit Conference,2-8-1995, aud

Here's a  good Audience capture of the summit conference band , this was obviously recorded while they were touring the essential postcards Cd.
Nice long chewy set ... thanks to the original Taper/Seeders!

SEEDERS Notes
Reggie Workman's Summit Conference

August 2, 1995

Yoshi's, Oakland, CA
(first set only)

Reggie Workman  bass,
Andrew Hill  piano,
Sam Rivers  flute, soprano & tenor sax
Julian Priester  trombone
Pheeroan akLaff  drums

01 Conversation (Sonelius Smith)  25:31
02 Suite Tristan (Workman) 13:15
03 unidentified  8:39
04 Joanne (Hill) 13:29
05 Breath (Priester)  10:06
06 Midnight River Crossing (AkLaff)  5:49

TT 76:49

This quintet of giants came to be as a consequence of Ralph Simon’s offer to Reggie Workman to record a CD for his label Postcards in 1993. The result is the brilliant "Summit Conference" (Postcards  POST1003), highly recommended and still in press.
This show was recorded almost two years later at Yoshi's in Oakland, CA. I can neither find it in a bot list search nor apparently in blogland, so I assume it is uncirculated on the web. This is a remarkably fine audience (or perhaps, on stage) recording with a intimate and very concentrated atmosphere and no distracting noise at all.
On the CDR I received there were very short silent parts near the start and end of tracks 2 and 3 which are probably due to a transfer from a CDR with SBEs.
I repaired this and retracked all tracks. Pitch is correct (I suppose this comes from a digital source).
As the levels initially are very low on the original recording, I raised them a little (more so in the very low passages and less so towards the end).
I also applied a tiny amount of compression to the really loud passages.
As always, I did all processing in 24bit.

The closing stage announcement identifies track 5 as "Midnight River Crossing" and track 6 as "Breath".
Both relevant discographers (Ronald Lyles in his Andrew Hill Discography and Rick Lopez in his Sam Rivers Sessionography) do so likewise (see below), but track 5 is clearly the same as Julian Priester's "Breath" on POST1003,
so I assume that track 6 is "Midnight River Crossing" by Pheeroan akLaff.

There might be a splice in track 1 at 3:32:485. I removed a click there.

All praise goes to the creators of the music, truly a summit conference, and thanks so much to the unknown taper!

SAM RIVERS TUBA TRIO/JAMES NEWTON "FLUTES" (CIRCLE RECORDS 1976/77)

I post this on behalf of inamorata.

In his own words:

Sam Rivers Tuba Trio/James Newton - Flutes!(Circle Records, 1976/1977)

This serves both as an alternative transfer of the final section of the Sam Rivers Tuba Trio at the Bimhuis in 1976 and as the first installment of The Complete James Newton on Circle Records.

Sam Rivers Tuba Trio/James Newton: Flutes!
Circle Records RK 7677/7

Sam Rivers, flute

Warren Smith, drums & percussion

A1 Essence - Part XI (Rivers/Daley/Smith)

Recorded live September 2, 1976 at Bimhuis, Amsterdam by Rudolf Kreis

James Newton, flute

B1 Woman (Bobby Bradford)
B2 The Dean (James Newton)

B2, B3 recorded live May 21, 1977 at Studio A, KPFK Pacifica Radio Los Angeles, Cahuenga Blvd., N. Hollywood, CA
Produced by Rudolf Kreis

A link for Sam Rivers' Essence Pt. XI (courtesy of Nick) was posted by onxidlib in the comments to http://inconstantsol.blogspot.com/2012/02/sam-rivers-tuba-trio-essence-heat-and.html. However, that transfer appears to have gone though radical noise reduction, resulting in some loss of high frequency detail. This is my own transfer, carefully de-rumbled and de-clicked but otherwise unchanged except for the manual removal of some defects (mostly in the James Newton tracks).

SAM RIVERS TUBA TRIO - "ESSENCE - THE HEAT AND WARMTH OF FREE JAZZ" (CIRCLE, 1976)

Finally a proper post of the complete concert (almost!) - THANK YOU GLMLR !
In the correct sequence and pitch-corrected - this is part I - IX > part X you'll find here

Part XI is still missing....as is a proper re-issue...!

IMPORTANT NOTE:

This rip is identical to the one which was first posted on Church Number Nine in early 2007, except in that this is now in flac, whereas the earlier post was in mp3. The same original wav files were used for each post.

Unfortunately, the three original LP's, as issued, reversed the entire sequence of the music as played, i.e. LP3 (sides 5 & 6) comprised the first set, LP2 (sides 3 & 4) comprised the second set, and LP1 (sides 1 & 2) comprised the third set.

This, I thought, was nonsense, so here (as on the earlier C#9 post) I have changed the sequence back to what the musicians originally played. Consequently, what is posted here is:

CD1 - the whole of the first set (LP sides 5 & 6), plus the first half of the second set (LP side 3)

CD2 - the second half of the second set (LP side 4), and the whole of the third set (LP sides 1 & 2).

SAM RIVERS TUBA TRIO & EARL CROSS SEXTET "JAZZ OF THE SEVENTIES" (CIRCLE RECORDS, 1973/76)

Some weeks ago I relistened to Noah Howard's "Black Ark" - again Earl Cross impressed me with his wonderful playing.
I started a reasearch about reccordings with/from Mr.Cross - there are very few and less are available.
Thanks to W. who kindly borrowed me this LP we are now able to enjoy one of the rare appearances of the trumpet/fluegelhorn player extraordinaire: Earl Cross!

As a "bonus" the LP contains a song of Sam Rivers Tuba Trio....three LPs from a concert at the Bimhuis were released on the german (Cologne) lable Circle - this is not the concluding track.
For "Essence XI" we would need "Sam Rivers/James Newton - Flutes" also on Circle Records...

Does anyone have the first three LPs?

Carman Moore (feat. Sam Rivers) - Four Movements for a Fashionable Five-Toed Dragon

Here's a very interesting item supplied by "inamorata" who agreed to write a little intro to this record:

Carman Moore (feat. Sam Rivers): Four Movements for a Fashionable Five-Toed Dragon

01 Overture 2:44
02 1st Movement - Pastorale 11:22
03 2nd Movement - Urban Walk 14:58
04 3rd Movement - Colours 14:27
05 4th Movement - Folk Energy 12:47

This is a rather peculiar record, and a strange context for Sam Rivers to appear in. It may not be exactly rare (there is a copy on offer at *bay right now for USD 19.95) but definitely has not left many traces on the WWW. Here's what Rick Lopez in his amazing Sam Rivers Sessionography (http://www.bb10k.com/RIVERS.disc.html) says about it, quoting Anthony B. Rogers (I included the whole entry with the files):

"This is an LP produced by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council and released in celebration of the American Bicentennial. The music was first presented at the 9th Hong Kong Ready-to-Wear Festival... The music was composed by Carman Moore and performed by members of the American Symphony Orchestra with... soloists."

The soloists are Sam Rivers, Elliott Randal, Kenneth Bichel, Richard Davis, and Warren Smith. The score by Carman Moore is played by members of the American Symphony Orchestra conducted by Isaiah Jackson. Although it has a jazzy tinge, it is not at all what one would expect from the list of soloists or, more specifically, the presence of Sam Rivers. I find it strange and fascinating and quite nice, but judge for yourselves.

The LP was recorded on February 29, 1976 (again according to Rick Lopez), right in the middle between what I consider the absolute high points of Sam Rivers prolific oeuvre: the IAI duo sessions with Dave Holland (February 18), and the Quest session with Holland and Altschul (March 12--13), both featuring the most intense and intimate musical communication I can think of.

I was lucky enough to find a well-kept copy and ripped and cleaned it very carefully (all remastering was done in 24bit resolution). I'm glad to share it here with the kind help of kinabalu. To him and to all other contributors here I wish to express my gratitude for the amazing amount of fine and rare music I got from this blog. I am mostly too busy to leave a comment, but this (and , hopefully, some future indirect contributions) is my sincere thank you to all of you.

Kind regards,
inamorata
