Thanks to Bozo for this tape.  Once you get used to listening to this from inside one of the basses it's ok.  The saxes are a little on the quiet side but this is a stupendous grouping with some fabulous playing. Pretty wild (no township).  Something happens (?) at 33:05 so I put a track break in.

PIERRE FAVRE QUARTETT "PIERRE FAVRE QUARTETT" (WERGO, 1969)

Have the LP since several years. Plus I got a rip from a friend years before I found the vinyl.
The sound of the rip seemed to be really OK. But it had a lot of nasty scratches which caused many clicks and some pops. Tried to remove as many as possible. (cover from the www)

Especially great to my recent listening experience is the bass of PK - but it is all along a classic.
All four musicians still young and at the beginning of their considerable musical achievements.

COMPANY "BBC STUDIOS, MAY 1983"

While preparing this post I got confused a bit. Got this with a text file which states 11 items but my version has 12. The point of consideration are tracks 5 and 6. The list coming with the CD-r I've got years ago says there's only tr. 5 ( EP-HD-JL). But the folder contained also tr. 6 (EP-JL).
Maybe the performance of the trio was split into two separate tracks? And I cannot hear Hugh Davies on track 6. So it seems the way it is offered here might be accurate enough. Maybe someone can shed some light on this...Andy?

I left the short announcements which are obviously truncated - but better some meagre crumps of hopefully reliable information than none at all.
Interestingly this recording is not mentioned in Ben Watson's book on Derek Bailey, although it has a particular chapter on Company concerts and recordings.
There is an official Company recording from the I.C.A., London, 24-28 May 1983, which is also the only Company never reissued.

But the music is great and IMO that's what is important.

EVAN PARKER & PETER KOWALD "COTTBUS, 1979"

Re-discovered this excellent recording today when a friend and myself browsed through my collection and listened to great music for almost four hours (with a meal in-between).
Also soundwise a superb outing from these two early prime members of the European version of Free Music.
It seems to me that in later years both worked only very infrequently together. We must not forget that the first visit of Kowald to the UK were he met and played with Parker and John Stevens was a kind of initial ignition for the then burgeoning pan-European scene at the end of the 1960s.
Not the only early meeting but arguably a seminal one.

For Correct Silence - I really enjoy your comments and reasoning. Makes IS a better place - Thanks

EUROPÄISCHE JAZZNACHT FÜSSEN "1993/1994/1995 TEIL 1"

The "König Ludwig Lied" is a traditional song which came up shortly after the mysterious death of king Ludwig II from Bavaria.
Lyrics vary sometimes - occaisonally with a strong incriminating political content.
But it is also a quite 'kitschy' song which has also connotations to a superficial view of Bavaria and its history/customs.

HOHE UFER KONZERTE + 1 (1976/77)

I got this rip through a kind trader - THANK YOU!! - and I post it as I've received it (only a tiny bit of manual declicking).

Here is a loose translation of the cover's text:

"The "alta ripa" group (Günter Christmann, Johannes Goebel and Gunter Lage) was formed to create a place in Hannover, were they could be presented unusual forms of dance, theater, text, new music, improvisation, new jazz a.o.
In cooperation with the Hannoverschen Künstlerverein and with the help of the ministry of science and arts [region of Niedersachsen - in the nothern part of Germany], monthly Hohe Ufer concerts were held in the historical museum of Hannover.
Parts of the program were held also in three other cities.
The surprising success of the presentation gave the motive for the publication of this LP."

The last piece "Tanka" is from another LP - probably released by the city of Langenhagen, which is located near Hannover.

The lyrics on track 4 are from the german painter Kurt Schwitters.
His activites were far broader than only painting - dada, surrealism, poetry, sound, sculpture, graphic design, typography and installation art. Most famous he is for his collages called "Merz Pictures".

GLOBE UNITY ORCHESTRA "BERLINER JAZZTAGE, 1970"

Several weeks ago I was doing research for some liner-notes. Eagerly searching for information also at the www I came across a book called "Postserielle Musik und Free Jazz" by Hans Kumpf.
The contents of the book did not help in my search. But I encountered some informations (and a score) of Manfred Schoof's "Ode".
Luckily I found the music in the collection of a friend who generously send me the files.
"Ode" never was available officially although it seems to be a rather important piece of music for the development of German (European) Free Jazz.

Schlippenbach's "Globe Unity 70" is or better was available through Atavistic.
Seemingly it's OOP at the moment - therefore I left it for your enjoyment.

The title of Brötzmann's tune "Drunken in the Morning Sunrise" reminded me about the circumstances for the recording sessions of "Machine Gun".
Brötzmann and Buschi Niebergall went - after the first part of the session - for some beers.
Eventually they took shelter for a nap at a building lot. Next morning Niebergall and Brötzmann woke up, had a mouthful of beer and went back to the "Lila Eule" for the second part of their recording session......

TONY OXLEY - INCUS 8 (1971 - 1975)

This is a re-up (my rip in flac) of Sotise's post from February 26, 2007.
I've added a new pic above and the line-up etc.
The following is his text from seven years ago.....

hi all here's a riveting long unavailable album by tony oxley. incus8 1975

most of the tracks are solo percussion and electronics,a couple feature ensembles with the usual suspects, derek b ,barry g
,paul r,etc.

this has remained sadly unissued for some inexplicable reason.

its a very rewarding listen guaranteed to reverse

any received opinion /assumption you may have about solo percussion being boring.

oxley also happens to be a visionary painter and graphic artist of some note.

here is some biographical info about oxley from the european free improvised music website.

Born Sheffield, 15 June 1938. Drums, percussion, violin, electronics.
Tony Oxley, with Derek Bailey and Gavin Bryars, created one of the foundations of free improvisation in the UK through their explorations in the group Joseph Holbrooke. A detailed retrospective view of Joseph Holbrooke can be found in Bailey (1992, pp. 86-93) but, briefly, the group existed in Sheffield from 1963 to 1966, initially playing conventional jazz though by 1965 playing totally improvised pieces. The fact that the three were 'isolated' in Sheffield from developments elsewhere (John Stevens and the SME) provided an ideal environment for experimentation and development. After that the participants moved to London, Oxley becoming the house drummer at Ronnie Scott's while all the while continuing with experimental music. He was in at the beginning of the Incus label with Bailey and Evan Parker and some of his work for that label is recognised as landmarks in the development of free music. He also appeared in various (early) versions of the London Jazz Composers Orchestra
In the last 25 years he has performed and recorded in an extremely wide variety of situations, from those where an emphasis on time-keeping is important to free situations with perhaps Paul Bley at one extreme and Cecil Taylor at the other. His work with Taylor, as a member of The Feel Trio with William Parker, in duos, or augmented with other musicians (such as the quartet of Taylor, Oxley, William Parker and Derek Bailey for two concerts in London and Manchester in 1991) lasted from 1988 to 1991 and can be seen by the viewing a selection of their concert schedule.
In recent years Tony Oxley has run his own Celebration Orchestra, worked with Bill Dixon - both are painters as well as musicians, and there have been plans for multimedia presentations - and with the Austrians, violinist Andreas Schreiber and pianist Dieter Glawischnig in the trio Cercle. This group briefly toured the UK in 1997 (having played the Beijing Jazz Festival in October 1996), with displays of Oxley's paintings, and had a broadcast on BBC Radio 3 in May 1997. Oxley has also begun to work again in duo with Derek Bailey, playing, for example at the Knitting Factory in New York in September 1995, in London in November 1995 and in Vand'Oeuvre in France in May 1997. He also remains in demand to bring unconventionality to conventional settings, particularly with his 'rainforest percussion', playing for example, on ECM recordings with Paul Bley and John Surman and with the Tomasz Stanko Quartet.
His kit is highly individual and an early version of it was described by Derek Bailey (1992, p. 101) thus:
'The acoustic part is: drums - eight, various sizes and texture; cymbals, fourteen, various sizes, thicknesses, weights, sounds; cowbells - five, from six inches to sixteen inches; wood surfaces - five, wood blocks and oriental skulls; saucepans - two. The amplified section of the kit is: amplified frame containing cymbals, wires, various kitchen equipment, motor generators, springs, used with 3 contact mikes (home-made), 2 volume pedals, 1 octave splitter, 1 compressor, 1 ring modulator and oscillator, 1 amplifier and two speakers.'
More recently the whole kit has been slimmed down and the electronics have (probably temporarily) been put to one side, but the playing, of course, remains individualistic. A transcription of an interview with Oxley, where he discusses his current kit (1997) with Alyn Shipton in a BBC Radio 3 Broadcast is available, complete with sound clips.
Tony Oxley is also a painter and three pages of his paintings can also be viewed: Paintings 1 or Paintings 2 and Paintings 3.

PLEASE BUY CD'S BY TONY OXLEY ,YOULL FIND MANY LISTED IN HIS SELECTED DISCOGRAPHY AT THE EUROPEAN FREE IMPROVISED MUSIC PAGES.
