Arthur Blythe-The Grip & Metamorphosis-1977

A little request fulfillment,2 monster live sets by one of the great bands of its day,
These are among my favorite jazz records period!!!
.
. To my knowledge, both were also issued in Japan by Paddle Wheel , and once on CD combined  in the early 90's..

The Band has a very distinct unique sound, with Bob Stewart and Abdul Wadud  given plenty of space , all the instruments more or less have an equal weight.
in the ensemble passages, there's a lot here that is delightfully  reminiscent of earlier free wheeling New Orleans , collective playing....

Beautiful Stuff .
and btw,Blythe hasn't been well the last couple of years, and you can help him by buying some of his available cds from reputable sources, such as the labels Cadence..Enja or in an out .

ENJOY!

JAYNE CORTEZ AND THE FIRESPITTERS – MAINTAIN CONTROL (BOLA PRESS, 1986)

I was preparing this post for a request from May 2012, when I found, sadly, that Jayne Cortez died on 28 December 2012. A powerful poet, both in writing and performance, and a civil rights activist, Jayne released numerous books and albums. Her first album as leader was with Richard Davis on bass (Celebrations and Solitudes, Strata-East). Many later albums were written with her band, The Firespitters, produced with her son, Denardo Coleman, and featured leading free jazz and African musicians.

ARTHUR BLYTHE QUINTET - LIVE IN MONTRÉAL, QB, CANADA JULY 1981

Here's a wonderful concert by the great Arthur Blythe in his prime.

One of my favourite concert albums of all time has always been the Grip/Metamorphosis set on India Navigation from a few years before this concert.

Arthur has been around forever, and has recently (last 10 years) made a spate of great records for diverse labels.

For a time it looked like he was floundering after being picked up by cbs, for whom he made a couple of great records which didn’t sell, and are only now being rediscovered for the gems they are.
Label executives have never been terribly tolerant of artists intentions, unless they can make money.
So it seemed to a lot of Arthurs fans for a time that he was being manicured , and given a commercial makeover that didn’t suit him at which a lot of his virtues and integrity were sacrificed, to recoup the big advances and initial cost of that manicure.

But Arthur's back in full force,
And heres a potent souvenir from the glory days of that great period from the mid seventies to the early eighties.

Thanks to the original seeder/trader
