Tete Mbambisa - Did You Tell Your Mother - 1979

Here is one record by one of the most unknown hero of the south African jazz. Tete Mbambisa has been considered as a major reference by musicians like Johnny Dyani or Dudu Pukwana. But Mbambisa have recorded only few records, less than ten for a man who is more than 80 years old. Here we have some very beautiful cape jazz, relaxed music with positive vibrations. Some of the musicians on this session can also be found on some records by Dollar Brand recorded and published by the same label like « Cape Town Fringe » or « Mannenberg Is Where It’s Happening ».

  • Trane Ride - Past Time - Winter time - Irene

Bass: Zulu Bidi
Drums: Monty Weber
Piano/composition: Tete Mbambisa
Tenor Sax/Flute: Basil Coetzee

The Sun ml4258 published in 1979

Recently the label Matsuli Music have reissued the first session by Mbambisa under the name « The Soul Jazzmen »

In 2012 independent producer Jonhattan Eato have recorded and published a superbe solo piano by Tete Mbambisa that can be found here
or

Last but not least: a recent recording by Tete with British musicians have been published in south Africa in the end of 2017 in a very limited quantity, it will probably be issued in the world very soon. In preparation is also the first time issue of an unreleased session from 1978.

Doudou Gouirand - Mouvements Naturels - Disques Jam 1982

Doudou Gouirand is a french saxophonist who has started to record in the middle of the seventies. As side man he have worked with Pierre Dørge New Jungle Orchestra, Mal Waldron, Johnny Dyani, Okay Temiz’s Oriental Wind, Michel Marre to name a few. Some of those musicians are featured on his own albums. In 1985 he have recorded « Forgotten Tales » with Don Cherry on one track but this album is not so memorable in my opinion. Three years before he published « mouvements naturels » with some of the musicians previously mentionned + Chris McGregor on one track.

Just to add to the mini Phillip Wilson fest!
Heres an upgrade of another great lp, which has been around the web as mp3's..

Unusual,to hear Dyani with an amped up industrial strength tone... he often occupies the foreground on this one.

Johnny Mbizo Dyani - African Bass

Here's some more Johnny Mbizo Dyani, this time a session recorded in Milano in November 1979, about a month or so prior to the Stockholm sessions we featured in the last post. This, however, is a solo/duo set with drummer/percussionist Clifford Jarvis and quite different from the Stockholm session. Only three pieces on this record, first a solo bass track with added Mbizo vocals, then a piano-drums duo with Jarvis on drums and then finally, on the second side, an extended duo piece, starting with vocal improvisations and handclaps, then sequing into a bass-drums duo, starting and ending with a four note motiv and developing into a drum solo with some frenzied arco playing from Mbizo in the middle. A much more closeted, intimate set, this one, featuring the fat, thick tone of Mbizo's bass, of which I'll never grow tired.

This one was out on the Italian Red Record label and has never been rereleased. A bit of background static on this disc, but hopefully, not too distracting. This one is for Igor/Selim and their valuable discographical project, to which this is a small contribution.

The basic facts:
Johnny M. Dyani - African Bass
Red Record VPA 149

Johnny M. Dyani - bass, piano, voice
Clifford Jarvis - drums, voice

Side1
Afrikan Anthem (Zulu) (trad. arr. J.M. Dyani)
Afrikan Blues (J.M.Dyani)
Ithi-Gqi (J.M.Dyani)

Side2
South Afrikan (trad.arr. J.M.Dyani)
The Robin Irland Struff (J.M.Dyani)

Recorded at Barigozzi Studio, Milan, 14/11/79
Produced by Sergio Veschi
Photos: E. Carminati

It's actually listed as "Irland", but I trust it's a typo for "Island". There's no date of release for this record, but as the session was in late 1979, I guess we're talking 1980 or later.

As always, enjoy!

Johnny Mbizo Dyani - Witchdoctor's Son 'Together'

Following Dudu Pukwana's Zila, here's Johnny Mbizo Dyani's Witchdoctor's Son. This is not to be confused with the Witchdoctor's Son that came out on the Steeplechase label with a different line-up, though with Dudu Pukwana in both. This here is a Swedish - South African crew assembled by Mbizo for a session in Stockholm in late 1979 - early 1980. Most of the South Africans on the record were living in Sweden at the time, including Mbizo while Pukwana flew in from London for the session. Kenny Haakonson, guitarist with the prog rock outfit Kebnekajse was roped in as well as drummer Bosse Skoglund, old chums of Mbizo.

What we have here is one side of Mbizo compositions drawing on the popular SA music of the 50s and later, one traditional (in fact the same tune as the one on the Zila album posted previously), one quickie fusion number and then the odd one out, I thought, "Kalahari", named after the Botswana desert. Here Haakonson gets to do a proggish uptempo piece which would not out of place on a Kebnekajse record from the 70s, though normally not associated with Mbizo, though . Mbizo has vacated the bass for keyboards and handles vocal duties on this record.

All in all, this is eminently danceable and groovable, and an appropriate follow-up to Zila, of which there'll be more later (and more Dyani, of course).

Basic facts:

1. Together
2. Johnny's Kwela
3. Marabi Soweto
4. High Priest
5. Kalahari
6. Crossroads
7. Tula Tula

All compositions by Johnny Mbizo Dyani, except 7, traditional, arranged by JMD.

Johnny Mbizo Dyani - keyboards, vocals
Dudu Pukwana - altosax, whistles
Virimuje Shimmy Radise - tenor sax
Kenny Hakansson - electric guitars
Hassan Ban - congas
Bosse Skoglund - drums
Felix Perrera - South African trad. harp

Produced by Stanley Koonin at Sound City Studios, Stockholm, Dec.1979-Jan.1980.

This was released posthumously on the Cadillac label in 1987 and label head John Jack is listed as executive producer, though whether he may have had anything to do with the original sessions is not clear.

Dyani - Temiz - Feza - Music for Xaba (Sonet, 1972)

A small contribution to the south African thread running through these pages, and by way of a response to a request, here's Music for xaba a great fusion of free jazz , tribal psychedelia and those unforgettable township melodies.

All these players had strong associations with Don Cherry.. and these sessions have a marked resemblance to many of his projects...(long may he b4e remembered).
To those who are familiar with Cherry and the many classics in the free ethno tribal trance out sub genre, but don't know this..its well worth checking out.

note this is my rip, and thus different to that which first appeared at jizz relics, and has since done heavy duty in the blogosphere.
For my money feelings ,on side one and gorans soder the final track contain some of the best Feza playing on wax.

JOHN STEVENS - SPONTANEOUS MUSIC ENSEMBLE (aka ‘Oliv’) (MARMALADE, 1969)

A Friend ,who wants to remain anonymous has sent me this.

John Stevens – Spontaneous Music Ensemble (aka ‘Oliv’)
Kenny Wheeler (fh), Trevor Watts (as), Johnny Dyani (b), John Stevens (perc), Maggie Nicols (voc), Pepi Lemer (voc),
Carolann Nicholls (voc). Rec. by Eddie Offord at Advision Studio, London, February 7th, 1969.

Waiting for Giorgio 22’50 –
Oliv I (Stevens/Nicols) 19’33 Marmalade 608008/Polydor 2384 009 (lp)
all out except Watts, Dyani, Stevens, Nicols
Oliv II (Stevens/Nicols) 16’02 Marmalade 608008/Polydor 2384 009 (lp)

This is almost folk like , very different to the pointilism derided as plink plonk scratch by detractors, which characterises most of their out put.

many thanks to the friend

Johnny Mbizo Dyani - Grandmother's Teaching

Here is a rare item which has been confounding me for a while. A Johnny Dyani discography on the net lists this as being released on the ITM label in Germany. Having got the item, I found that it was actually a tribute record to Dyani from a group led to Marilyn Mazur, but with Chris McGregor and Harry Beckett guesting on a couple of tracks.

So, further research led me to this record which is another "Grandmother's Teaching" on the JAM Disques 0582/JD030 (France) label. And this is the real deal.

This album has six tracks:

1. Blues For Bra Dick
2. I Will Let The Spring To Explain
3. Open Ballad To Mandela
4. Grandmother's Teaching
5. Zalis Idinga
6. Majikas Bhekane

Composition credits are not provided on the record; most likely all are by Dyani. Recording details not provided either; most likely 1982 or at any rate, the early 80s.

Line-up:

Butch Morris, cornet;
Doudou Gouirand, alto saxophone;
Pierre Dørge, guitar;
Johnny Dyani, bass, voice;
Makaya Ntshoko, drums

Gouirand is French presumably and has done a few more records on the same label; Dørge is Danish and has recorded other albums with Dyani, mostly on Steeplechase; Morris is well-known having played with many prominent free jazzers in the 70s and beyond and Ntshoko has recorded with other members of the Blue Notes and their UK associates on the Ogun label.

"Blues for Bra Dick" kicks off the proceedings in a funky mode with a Dyani groove that drives the soloists along. "I will let the Spring" sounds like something that would not be out of place on a "Nordic" ECM album with a plaintive, evocative theme which could have been signed by Garbarek or Vesala or Stanko. "Mandela" is as the title indicates, a slow, somber and pensive ballad. "Zalis Idinga" starts off in similar somber fashion, but picks up speed after a short while and returns to the ballad theme at the end. "Majikas Bhekane" is classic kwela with the band in swinging mode and Dyani intoning over the rest. That leaves the title track which is truly something else. Dyani starts off in acapella and is slowly joined by percussion and then bass which leads into a duet and and fades out, unfortunately after about 11 minutes. This is an astounding vocal performance which I can't recall having heard on any other Dyani record. Worth the price of admission alone. Truly stunning!
