GLOBE UNITY ORCHESTRA "BERLINER JAZZTAGE, 1970"

Several weeks ago I was doing research for some liner-notes. Eagerly searching for information also at the www I came across a book called "Postserielle Musik und Free Jazz" by Hans Kumpf.
The contents of the book did not help in my search. But I encountered some informations (and a score) of Manfred Schoof's "Ode".
Luckily I found the music in the collection of a friend who generously send me the files.
"Ode" never was available officially although it seems to be a rather important piece of music for the development of German (European) Free Jazz.

Schlippenbach's "Globe Unity 70" is or better was available through Atavistic.
Seemingly it's OOP at the moment - therefore I left it for your enjoyment.

The title of Brötzmann's tune "Drunken in the Morning Sunrise" reminded me about the circumstances for the recording sessions of "Machine Gun".
Brötzmann and Buschi Niebergall went - after the first part of the session - for some beers.
Eventually they took shelter for a nap at a building lot. Next morning Niebergall and Brötzmann woke up, had a mouthful of beer and went back to the "Lila Eule" for the second part of their recording session......

Here we have another installment of the Baden Baden Free Jazz Meetings.

Notes:

Some of the music from the Workshop portion of this set (discs 1-3) has been issued commercially: "Every Single One of Us is a Pearl," "Ruby, My Dear," and "Kunstmusik II" on Pearls (FMP 0380), and "Jahrmarkt" on Jahrmarkt/Local Fair (Po Torch PTR/JWD 2). These titles were recorded November 25-27 at the Südwestfunk Studios in Baden-Baden during the New Jazz Meeting dedicated to "Ten Years Globe Unity Orchestra."

For Part 2 of Kowald's "Jahrmarkt," the group is divided into six small groups throughout in the studio. From left to right in this recording:

The issued version of "Jahrmarkt" is presented as a single performance but in fact -- because of the logistics of arranging musicians in groups around the studio -- it was recorded in three pieces.


Rutherford's "Hip Hymn No. 2" also involved complicated logistics. The musicians are arranged in four groups from left to right:

Schlippenbach, Kowald, Niebergall, and Lovens
Rava, Carl, Pilz, and Mangelsdorff

In addition, Rutherford prepared a tape of the synthesizer part, and the group played on top of it.

Discs 4-5 were recorded during a public performance on November 28 at Kurfürstliches Schloss in Mainz.

This is the first performance of what came to be known as the Globe Unity Orchestra and one piece which was recorded at Donaueschingen (the other title "Globe Unity 67" was released by Atavistic as Globe Unity 67 and 70 (Atavistic Unheard Music Series UMS/ALP 223CD).
Two other groups played at this occaison:  Irène Schweizer's Jazz Meets India group and the Archie Shepp Quintet ("Live at the Donaueschingen Music Festival", MPS).

ALEXANDER VON SCHLIPPENBACH "GLOBE UNITY" (SABA, 1966)

"The cosmic eye at the central point and on the periphery of the sphere can see all the structures from every angle at the same time. From the divine indifference of the sphere emerge the solos with all the impulse of revolt. The lines they trace are the images of life."— Alexander von Schlippenbach, from the liner notes to Globe Unity (Saba, 1966).


As told to John Corbett by Peter Brötzmann: 'Out of the first trio (with Kowald and Sven-Åke Johnasson) and the Schoof/Schlippenbach Qunitet - Gerd Dudek was in it, Buschi, Jaki Liebezeit was the drummer - out of that combination was formed the first Globe Unity'. Not contradicting this, Jeske (1980), reported that Globe Unity was formed in autumn 1966 with a commission received by Alex von Schlippenbach from the Berlin Jazz Festival. 'We did three days of rehearsal in Koln and performed my composition entitled Globe Unity at the Philharmonie in Berlin on 3rd November. The piece was released on Saba the same year.' In the early days, the musical influences were various and the contributions and organization to some extent egalitarian, with Peter Brötzmann and Peter Kowald being particularly important. However, as the different 'periods' (Schlippenbach, 1993) were worked through Schlippenbach became the cornerstone and the provider of musical starting points for the group.........and in September 2012 Globe Uunity will be on the road again.



This was the birth of this unique orchestra which received great critics but the concert also has been titled “a men´s joke featuring the devil”

Heres an old favourite, brought to us by glmlr… a pristine rip of one of the GUO’S Great albums.
the version of lacy’s worms dedicated to ezra pound is extraordinarily vivid and definitive.
Comparatively speaking this is one of the best recorded ,most structured and less turbulent efforts.
That may make it uncharacteristic, but for me no less essential.
I owned this until it was lost to me in 1997, being a favourite I’d missed this a lot .. ..so thanks glmlr for stepping in.
