MANGELSDORFF - PORTAL QUARTET + MANGELSDORFF SOLO "LIVE IN GENOVA, 1981"

Got this recording from our recent anonymous donor some weeks ago.
Portal is sometimes a bit too much in the 'background'. This might be due to him wandering around on the stage.
In the same folder was the Mangelsdorff solo - so I assume it is from the same date...

GLOBE UNITY ORCHESTRA "BERLINER JAZZTAGE, 1970"

Several weeks ago I was doing research for some liner-notes. Eagerly searching for information also at the www I came across a book called "Postserielle Musik und Free Jazz" by Hans Kumpf.
The contents of the book did not help in my search. But I encountered some informations (and a score) of Manfred Schoof's "Ode".
Luckily I found the music in the collection of a friend who generously send me the files.
"Ode" never was available officially although it seems to be a rather important piece of music for the development of German (European) Free Jazz.

Schlippenbach's "Globe Unity 70" is or better was available through Atavistic.
Seemingly it's OOP at the moment - therefore I left it for your enjoyment.

The title of Brötzmann's tune "Drunken in the Morning Sunrise" reminded me about the circumstances for the recording sessions of "Machine Gun".
Brötzmann and Buschi Niebergall went - after the first part of the session - for some beers.
Eventually they took shelter for a nap at a building lot. Next morning Niebergall and Brötzmann woke up, had a mouthful of beer and went back to the "Lila Eule" for the second part of their recording session......

We had a request last year for Rhythmbox 1 and 2, live recordings featuring Peter Brötzmann, Fred van Hove, Han Bennink + Alfred Mangelsdorff, recorded and broadcast roughly mid-70s. Searching the archives, I came up with this 68-minute set from Quartier Latin, Berlin on 31 October, 1973 which definitely is live, has all four with Mangelsdorff popping in rougly mid-way through, and as was mentioned in the request, sounds like a professional recording suitable for airplay. Whether it is the one that was requested, I have no idea, but if anything, it's a pretty good substitute.

Having listened through it once, I'm not sure if this is jazz or whether there is anything avantgar(d)ish to it. To these ears, it's primal, pre-civilisational sound-makiing with the pianist trying to inject a bit of civility to the proceedings without really succeeding. So here we have two resident wildmen who could be shamans from an unspecified location in Siberia, trance masters from the Atlas mountains or thereabouts or just frolicking though the wilderness of Schwarzwald, playing what's there (which they eventually did): And there's a lot of homour in this, primal sceams courtesy of Bennink and Mangelsdorff.blending seamlessly into the general mêlée. In other words, whole lotta fun! To be enjoyed without hesitation!

EUROPE JAZZ ALL STARS "ROOM 1220" (TRIO, 1970)

Already posted in 2011 - here's the  re-up....

A forgotten masterpiece of European Jazz.
'Room 1220' is a tender yet burning duo of Mangelsdorff and Surman. And the mood of 'My Kind Of Beauty' still needs a public location (club or however you want to call it) to be build for ... in general I'm not a big fan of the Hammond organ, but what Eddy Louis is able to deliver ... and please listen to John Surman and Albert Mangelsdorff - they use the clichés - yet they reach a level far above such truisms.

Sadly OOP!
