Eliane Radigue - Geelriandre - Arthesis (Fringe Recordings, 2003)

1 Geelriandre 29:59
2 Arthesis 25:46

Pianist Gérard Fremy, in his liner notes - in French only, so you'd better invest in a good dictionary - recalls the story of the world premiere of Eliane Radigue's "Adnos" in the Musée Galliera, Paris, on November 10th 1974, an event at which all the important music journalists of the time were present, and not one of them wrote about. A kind of anti-Rite of Spring, if you like. Fremy seems somewhat baffled at the (non) reaction, but it seems clear that the reason for their silence was that they were confronted by a music that was literally decades ahead of its time. Back in the early seventies the first musicians who worked with ARP and Moog synthesizers were more interested in sci-fi bloops and swoops, but Radigue was one of the few composers (perhaps even the only composer) who recognised and exploited its potential for extremely slow transitions of pitch and timbre. Though she'd long been associated with the French musique concrète establishment through her work with Pierre Henry, her music revealed no apparent interest in Schaefferian solfège or the jump / cut aesthetic of standard slice'n'dice electronic music. Filing her away in the minimalism drawer might be inevitable, given her long association with various American institutions and enthusiastic champions of her music such as Phill Niblock, but the mystery and magic of Radigue's music occupies a twilight zone of minimalism between the static drone world of Young, Conrad and Niblock and the gradual process aesthetic of Reich and Glass. With the former, we're presented with great blocks of sound that occupy the listening space, redefining our perceptions of its architecture - the music itself is unchanging (until the often abrupt transition to the next drone), but we are free to explore its inner nuances; with the latter, once the process is set up and loaded, to quote Reich, it's more a question of following its gradual development, as musical material changes either incrementally (Glass's linear additive and Reich's later block additive processes) or at a regular rate (Reich's phase pieces). Radigue's elusive music sits squarely between the two perceptual worlds - it is forever on the move, albeit very slowly (try loading one of her pieces into some music software and speeding it up fivefold, and you'll be surprised), but constructed so meticulously that it somehow slips out of time: change is perceived as having taken place rather than taking place. However many times you listen - and this is music you will return to on many occasions - you'll probably never quite figure out how she did it.
The release (at last!) of these two works dating from 1972 and 1973 is another major event in the (re)discovery of Radigue's music, after Table Of The Elements' landmark triple CD issue of "Adnos" last year. "Geelriandre" features Fremy on piano, gently inserting beautifully poised sonorities into Radigue's seamless textures - John Tilbury's work with AMM comes inevitably to mind. Originally premiered in Paris in 1972, this particular recording was made in Amsterdam's Stedelijk Museum seven years later, and a few distant Dutch hacking coughs unfortunately manage to make themselves heard. "Arthesis", realised on a Moog synthesizer during Radigue's residency at the University of Iowa in 1973, is heard here in a recording of its world premiere in Los Angeles' Theatre Vanguard that year. It's utterly useless to describe either of these works: they simply must be heard to be believed. French musician and Metamkine label boss Jérôme Noetinger, who released Radigue's "Biogenesis" on his Cinéma Pour L'Oreille Collection a while back, has indicated that there remain several other pieces her early 1970s music that have so far not been released. It surely is only a matter of time: the world might not have been ready for "Adnos" in 1974, but thirty years later, Eliane Radigue's time has come. Anyone who seriously claims to be interested in new music simply cannot afford to pass this by.
Dan Warburton, Paris Transatlantic

In 2003, the small Italian label fringes, which had specialized in recordings of music on the farther edges of contemporary electro-acoustic improvisation, released the first disc on its archival sub-label: two earl- 70's performances by minimalist pioneer Eliane Radigue. It might seem an odd choice, but Radigue's steady-state, pulse and drone oriented works for synthesizer had cast a wider and wider influence over younger improvisers over the years, especially those concerned with the layering of extended tones and the unanticipated patterns that emerge. "Geelriandre," from 1972, created on the ARP synthesizer, begins with muffled bell tones nestled inside a drone that's just this side of harsh. Small sounds are added or removed over the piece's half-hour length, not through any strict system but rather intuitively, stressing the subtle placement of the notes within the drone-space, their sonic ripples the aural equivalent of pebbles tossed into a stream. At times, in its subtle complexity, the work comes very close to the sort of atmosphere generated by late AMM. It ends having, in one sense, traversed only scant territory; in another having opened huge vistas to explore. "Arthesis", performed the following year on a Moog synthesizer, largely dispenses with the personal flourishes and invests heavily in the essence of the drone itself, here a throbbing weave in which a given strand will occasionally rise to the surface and inevitably be subsumed, giving way to another. Choices are, of course, still being made by Radigue, but the overall effect is of experiencing some vast process of, for instance, leaning against the housing of an enormous generator, feeling its sounds and physical vibrations as one. It's ear-opening, invigorating music. Listeners who enjoy the work of practitioners such as Keith Rowe and Toshimaru Nakamura will be delighted at this possible antecedent.

We live in a wonderful time.

Sometimes the bad things that happen in this world and the pain and suffering of so many overshadow the good things that we do have. One of those good things is the music that we can now so freely share and enjoy, music of exceptional quality and enduring artistic value. Never before have so many been able to create and never before has an artist's work been so widely distributed, even to an audience dispersed around the entire planet. With this in mind, we proudly unveil Water Stories, the latest release by Finnish ambient maestro Janne Hanhisuanto, an outstanding contribution to this rising tide of artistic freedom that has touched us all.

Janne's debut Earth Mantra release, Icescapes, was critically acclaimed and very well received, and deservedly so. Janne's skill at crafting sublimely beautiful and mature ambient space music cannot be questioned. But with Water Stories, we feel he has upped the ante yet again, for in our opinion this album is simply a staggering accomplishment.

As with his previous work, the music of Water Stories exists somewhere in the crossover realm between ambient music, space music, and mellow new age, taking the best elements of each and fusing them into something altogether refreshing. Perhaps more introspective and slightly melancholy than his previous work, this music nonetheless possesses an almost aching elegance and wistful emotional appeal. While listening, we repeatedly found ourselves with goose bumps, drawn into the narrative of the album, into the water stories being told, immersed totally in the sound stage and sonic world that Janne has created. Anyone who is a fan of space music, light ambience, new age, or even symphonic music will likely find plenty to love about this stunning and delicate release.

Thematically, Janne presents a collection of tone poems inspired by water, and indeed his sound design and use of field recordings present this point of view well. We would encourage listeners to free their minds of concrete interpretations, however, as they listen to Water Stories, and instead let the magnificence flow through them unobstructed, like water through the sieve of the consciousness, and let the mind wander freely while the music plays. We would assert that this music is almost cinematic in nature, and would fit as the soundtrack to almost any story of importance. To us, this is the mark of a supreme artistic achievement, one where the listener can adapt the work to fit seamlessly into their own lives, to render a meaning as distinctively personal as each individual who listens. And Janne has achieved this in spades.

Very rarely do we hear an album that sounds so emotionally complicated that you're almost drawn to tears over how frail it is, and how lucky you are to hear it. Summons Of Shining Ruins is such an experience. Shinobu Nemoto treads a charred black landscape, picking up burnt fragments of his childhood and carefully threading them together into a hazy history for us to observe. Being a collector of all sorts of vintage recording equipment, this album is a massive display of Shinobu's masterful way with guitars and tapes. There is a prevailing sadness in this album, almost like Nemoto has resigned himself to an eternity of loss and decay, completely and utterly tethered to a void that overtakes everything. A brilliantly evocative trip that would definitely appeal to fans of Birchville Cat Motel, Boris and Tim Hecker. Limited edition of 100 copies with stunning photography by Jason Adams.

Since 2006 Óscar Yuste (aka Inane) has been self-releasing all his works at his webpage. After some gigs around Spain this artist from Zaragoza has decided to spread his work an reedit it on different labels.

Óscar Yuste considers his project Inane as a hybrid proposal in which to merge photography, design, improvisation and audiovisual experimentation. This project started with its homonymous album called Inane in which he settled down the basis of it’s very own language. After editing an EP homaging Eraserhead from David Lynch, Inane releases Til hamingju med afmælid that now comes to Audiotalaia as a reedited version ready to download.

Til hamingju med afmælid its probably the album that sets the tempo of Inane’s creative path, if we listen his following release called “Ensemble” we can understand waht’s going on with this particular artist and his way of constructing parcels of melodic drones and building cinematic scenes with a big charge of epic gestures.

Also we want to show our gratitude to Andrea Pazos who has agreed to work on the artwork for this special release. Pazos has been working on the image of this Inane release. She has combined its own visual language with the hidden concept behind Til hamingju með afmælið.

Robert Henke - Signal To Noise (Imbalance Computer Music, 2004)

1 Signal To Noise I 22:58
2 Signal To Noise II 9:32
3 Studies For Thunder 21:26

One of my favourite instruments, the Yamaha SY77 can produce timbres that slowly change and mutate via FM synthesis, and recordings of these sounds formed the basis for what was to evolve into Signal to Noise. The recordings mainly consisted of harmonic droning, so I found them to be a bit boring after extensive listening. I began filtering, pitch-shifting and processing the material using granular resynthesis, aiming to achive erosion and diffusion of the sound while preserve some of the original movements. The signal became the noise.

The sonic sculptures in Studies for Thunder were created mainly by feedig short pulses of filtered noise into a complex network of granular delay lines. No natural recordings were used as source material - this is a completely artificial world. But, in a fascinating coincidence, I experienced more thunderstorms in Berlin during the realzation of this project than ever before, so that the artificial storm took shape while I was listening to the actual storms outside my windows.

The photo on the cover was taken on February 1st, 2004 at Joshua Tree National Park in California, right before an impressive thunderstorm. When recording the first sounds for Signal to Noise, I immediately remembered the color and atmosphere I had experienced at this magical place. I looked at the image again and again during the creation of this CD, and it became the guideline and inspiration for what had to be done musically.

Studies for Thunder was further refined into a 30 minute eight channel concert version.
Robert Henke

In the mid-90s, New York City's electronic music scene was quite splintered, at least in regards to record shops. For trance, there was Throb, for disco-house there was Vinyl Mania, for drum and bass there was Breakbeat Science. But when it came to techno, it was usually Sonic Groove Records on Carmine Street where I first heard Monolake and the Chain Reaction/Basic Channel label for the first time. Monolake was at times a duo with Gerhard Behles, but in the end, it became a vehicle for Robert Henke. Nearly ten years later, Henke has recorded his third solo release, Signal To Noise, a minimalist wash of drone and crackles that epitomizes cold German winters and the relationship between man and machine. Crammed into 55 minutes, three expansive tracks make up the album. Keith Fullerton Whitman's use of drone and minimalist loops are probably the best source for comparison, but instead of Whitman's reliance on guitars as his origin, Henke's veteran use of computers shows the master showing his chops. On "Signal to Noise II," melodic elements akin to "Treefingers" from Radiohead's Kid A leave a lasting impression on the listener. Henke's liner notes cite his use of the Yamaha SY77 as the tool used to filter and synthesize the 'boring' drones originally created for the album -- hence the signals became the noise. Henke makes it clear that there are no natural sounds on this release, everything is artificial. During the making of Signal To Noise, Henke's home in Berlin experienced severe thunderstorms on a regular basis. This environment, coupled with the filtered drones has given computer music new life and sees Henke at the forefront of a synthesis between artists and computer music.

Mikrodepresja is a project of Robert Skrzyński from Poland.

Under this name it came into beeing in 2002 but it existed before under variety of different names. Mikrodepresja join in itself click n' cut & digital loop minimalism.

He is known for such works as "mikrohałas" (2007, 77industry), "mininoise" (2007, 77industry), "|14|15|3.3.30||3:40||" (2007, far from showbiz), "last day of sun" ( 2008, I hate Mondays rec.), "brud" (2009, 412 rec.).

His tracks also appeared on few compilations such as "a candle's golden glow" - Darkwinter holyday compilation" (2007, darkwinter). Mikrodepresja collaborated with many polish artist (Selmes viragszirom, Pleq, Kill the liver etc.).
On his foreign account are such persons as Leif Jordansson from Sweden, S.AmO from Japan and many more.
From the less formal point of view, it should be said that mikrodepresja's works are mirror image of his video activity under a name "no_signal". The sounds created by the artist are full of unspecified melancholy and sadness which is present in every world's being. The irregular and superficially chaotic music evoke a lot of opposing emotions and images which seems to be almost apocalyptic but there is always a note of hope...)

Rhythmic noise electronics with the expected attack of frequencies and harsh sounds... Track no 4 (Red Halo) though, swirls around you like an insistent dream or a hard-to-get rid-of obsession and leaves you with a sense of redemption, or maybe something else, an eventful aural experience anyway. David Khan & Peter Wright - Confinement And Release (Apoplexy, 2001)

**** sorry no cover art *****

1 Part One 23:09
2 Part Two 23:18

Limited to a mere 50 copies on CDR, confinement & release was recorded live in October, 2000. It features two tracks, each about 23 minutes in length. Their catalogue of instruments is impressive: David Khan performs on sampler, analogue keyboard, metal pipe, knives, concrete, oil drum and Balinese rainmaker, while Peter Wright performs on bowed electric guitar, electric razor, digital effects, screwdriver and cymbal. As they describe it in the liner notes, these pieces are all about polarities, an exploration "of boundaries imposed and relieved and of the contrast between abstract and concrete viewpoints in both life and art." In the first track, an expanse of sparse, metallic sounds opens up, the sounds appearing and disappearing in slow movements. Silence and resonance figure largely in this piece, which is in turn answered by the swirling drones in the second piece. Metallic textures and abrasive harmonies are coupled with the droning of Wright's bowed electric guitar in an intense, dark atmosphere. This later recedes to reveal a crunchy repetitive texture of fluctuating static sounds, ending suddenly and leaving you wanting more. It's an excellent work, engaging and highly recommended.

We found the sculpture at different moments in the first day, and agreed to go back the next day and try to get some music out of it, and record it. We did it in one continuous take, due to time limitations of the visit (everybody was waiting for us to get back to the bus), and we are glad it was so.

Lee Rosevere - The Vela Companion (Light Years Book II) (Test Tube, 2010)

1 Chapter Four - An Actual Infinite
2 Chapter Five - You Are a Floating Star
3 Chapter Six - Haumea
4 Chapter Seven - Re-entry

Canadian musician Lee Rosevere returns to test tube after a long - nearly three years - hiatus. 'The Vela Companion (Light Years Book II)' is the conceptual follow up to his previous release 'Light Years'.
Assuming that the previous three pieces on 'Light Years' were 'Chapters One to Three', the current release picks up at 'Chapter Four - An Actual Infinite' and goes from there on. Enjoy the same space-epic nostalgia of Lee's experimental ambient compositions as before, sounds that send spikes through your spine cord while you close your eyes and imagine a one-way trip to the boundaries of our galaxy, and beyond, in glorious 'star trek style'. It's also amazing how Lee sculpts the raw drone and turns it into a round-shaped and smooth sound artifact, a totally desirable and soothing artifact (Chapter Seven - Re-entry).

Lee also draws the mysterious and the obscure with his design ambient, like in 'Chapter Six - Haumea', one of his most accomplished (although short) pieces, where the urge to discover and explore the cosmos is just palpable, almost visible in every direction your attention is focused.
There's plenty of different moods throughout each piece, a genuine proof that Lee is a well experienced ambient composer. He should be writing independent sci-fi film scores by now... it's amazing how much talent is lying around here.

Keep it up, Lee!

Maps And Diagrams - Tintinnbulate (Audio Gourmet, 2010)

1 Komagataella 02:41
2 Irma's Injection 04:10
3 Two Centuries 04:11
4 Cucullospora 03:30

Maps and Diagrams "Tintinnbulate" is released on the Audio Gourmet label in November 2010. The work is a continuation of the conceptual drone-based sounds of "Koom" and "Foel" that was released on the Handstitched* imprint in 2009. This continuation sees the recycled use of original source material, layers and processed sound created during the making of the pre-mentioned releases.

Collectively, "Tintinnbulate" as a body of work travels and drifts through a distant rumble and sub-level murmur which force dense fragments of distorted melody from within the body of each piece - this content remains intentionally corroded and disjointed from the human ear - cascading into more a more audible, crystalline landscape.

Each piece is framed within its own floating horizon; it appears visible close-up but subsequently out-of-focus at the furthest point. In the layering of sound there is the natural aspect of field recordings, continuous static and human-influence which surround the listener and create a vast expanse of experimental and applied sound.

Susperia-Electrica - Intrinsic (Earth Mantra, 2010)

Nick Fortune of Susperia-Electrica returns triumphantly to our humble netlabel with his latest creation Intrinsic.

And what a splendid album we have in store for our listeners here. In the short while we have known Nick, he has impressed us mightily with his scope of vision, his superb production skills, and his trademark attention to detail. With Intrinsic, he elevates his craft even further, delivering an ornate and sleek collection of ambient space music that we think will you will fall in love with immediately.

Nick has raised the bar high indeed. As usual with his work as Susperia-Electrica, the music is cosmic and spacious, with heavenly layers of synthesizers flowing like the river of stars across the midnight sky, with waves of sound caressing each other in an elegant dance of quantum fields and particles, mathematical purity resulting in spiritual enchantment. Such thoughts dance and such images flicker through our mind as we listen to this exquisite album.

The production really knocks our socks off. Nick polishes all of his work with a fine eye toward the excellence of the production, but the sound quality of this album seems somehow even more gorgeous than usual. The sound field spans the full one hundred and eighty degrees, and somehow possesses a subtle three dimensional depth that is pure magic. His choices in timbre and loving sound design really shine through as well. Anyone who loves space music or light ambience will bond with this album right away, and will find plenty of detail to make repeated listens very rewarding. Remarkable work by an artist at the top of his game.

So it is with immense pleasure that we unveil Intrinsic, Susperia-Electrica's latest opus on Earth Mantra. One of the top pure space music releases of 2010, and an album we are truly grateful to be able to bring to our audience.

Able - Migrations (Rope Swing Cities, 2010)

It’s been a long hiatus for Rope Swing Cities while we dealt with life’s ever changing tapestry of challenges and decisions, but in 2010 we return with a year’s worth of releases from old friends and new faces alike. With this in mind, we would like to offer up for your perusal Migrations, the newest album from long time confederate, Able.

Over the last several years, Able has crisscrossed America, hitting both coasts and all points in between collecting impressions of the lives lived in our big, strange land. These memories have been given life in the form of the fifteen songs comprising this release.

Migrations is ambient music made for winter listening; dark, moody, longing, often confused, but ultimately hopeful. Able crafts stark, emotional soundscapes geared toward the searcher. Long, penetrating drones give way to crackles and pops; moments of urgent, driving percussion, the strum of guitar and the trample of feet. Other times, the drone conquers all else, melting away into cool meditation. Listening music in its purest form, Migrations is a headphones on, eyes down listening experience.

Enjoy!

Khate – Therapy (Just Not Normal, 2010)

What are you saying; you never heard of Khate before. What rock have you been living under?
One of the finer mistresses of the world of experimental electronics resurfaces with a brand new album!
After the longest absence from music making and as she claims ‘the crazies’ this fine fine artist returns and boy are we in for a treat. From one of our back and forth emails:

“But! I’m on the mend (or at least pretending to be). And one thing me & the ol’ therapist are working on is me being able to let go of artwork. Like, it’s never good enough, so it languishes in the hard drive/studio forever. I’ve got hours of material that have been building up over the past couple years that I just can’t let go of. Yet I’ve kept them around and worked on them over and over, so I must think they have some merit.

I wanna set some of these captive animals free, just grit my teeth and let them go. In my head, these are terrible tracks… but I can’t exactly hear someone argue otherwise unless I let them go, right?”

Let’s give Khate a warm welcome back and for now delve into this 17 track madness called Therapy, being Therapy.

Seconds In Formaldehyde - Inaudible (Verato Project, 2007)

1 There Is A Certain Feeling Under My Skin
2 The Calm Before The Storm
3 When Death Took Position Of Him

With five years of experience on his back and a couple of previously released albums in his account German guitar drone experimentalist Martin Fuhs comes with his third album. “Audible”. The album was released by verato project and it is a limited edition deluxe digipack. The album contains three songs that sums a whole record time of 45 minutes of guitar drone bliss, although the titles suggest something entirely different. Martin is at charge of the whole composition, performance and recording process aside from programming the drums and playing the guitar.
SIF continues the tradition of Aidan Baker’s Guitar drone ambient (he is a declared influence in Martin’s work). Half way improvisation and other half meticulous work, SIF is able to dissect every guitar chord into elongated drones of roomy lush and spacious ether. He denotes mastery in superimposing guitar layers, one over another in perfect motion, decomposing the original sound and creating an entirely different relentless set of drones that cut their way from ethereal landscapes with melancholic undertones to relaxed and grandiloquent vistas that incite oniric states in the listener. Like fumes of incense smoke, elevating and the concentrating in a spot, the drone quality is undulating ever expanding, incessantly moving and evolving. From one basic drone loop then comes another very subtly and in the blink of an eye we have a sum of layers conforming a whole piece of delicate beauty. Martin is able to bring cohesion and divergence to the plot by adding a smart usage of drum programming, excellently conceived and managed. The beat bring this chill out quality to the music, conceiving a very simple quasi heart beat accompaniment to the ever morphing qualities of the drone layers slowly setting a placid atmosphere of vague elements and fuzzy environments. Music to lie off ! First piece “There is a certain feeling under my skin”, in spite of the title, the song is an entrance to calmness and relaxation. Second piece “The calm before the storm” still preserving the ever moving aspect of the drone layers takes a more tribal aspect with the drum sequence, it has some eastern reminiscence also and evokes perhaps a wide hamman where the course of time seems to be of eternal quality. This piece is more hypnotic by constant repetition in the guitar drone sequences and perhaps comes with a little more tension as product of this effect. Latest song is the most western alike and the more ethereal as well. No more drum programming is present, only a westernized psychedelic echoed guitar strolls in first plane while the ethereal clouds of atonal sound stampede at the bottom. This is perhaps the more ethereal and dreamy piece. Very surreal and sun flowered, the walls of guitar noise float relentlessly inducing infinite bliss and a casting away shadows. It is like the soundtrack for a perfect evening of delicate and yet powerful golden tonalities.
SIF is a band that pleases the unaware listener or the practical expert in drone ambient. Very well worked and polished. With no flaws accountable, the pieces have the subtlety to seduce the listener without burdening him with over imposition of sequences or unnecessary loops. Enough rhythmic to allow a conscious perspective and to avoid drowsy states it is perfect to chill out and relax in proactive calm. It is not yet another drone guitar ambient but an interesting experience of sound quality and ethereal atmospherics.

Machinefabriek - Roes (self release, 2005)

1 Untitled 1:32
2 Untitled 2:14
3 Untitled 3:09
4 Untitled 2:26
5 Untitled 2:25
6 Untitled 1:24
7 Untitled 0:55
8 Untitled 6:28
9 Untitled 0:18

'Roes' is best translated as 'intoxication', but it's not clear wether this describes the state this music was recorded in. Probably it does. This is already the sixth release by Dutch Machinefabriek, and not live this time, so no noise here. That is to say, only partly. In the nine pieces here, which are to be heard as one piece (non-intoxicated by this reviewer), noise plays a small role, but is much more manipulated and worked out in the form of a sound collage. Through some of the muffled hiss and distortion, we hear the far away play on a piano and some electronics. Everything sounds like well-processed by computer means, and Machienfabriek places itself along the lines of a noisy version of Richard Chartier or Roel Meelkop, but with much shorter tracks but not to dissimilar dramatic built ups and changes. So far the best release to come out of this machine factory.

Muied Lumens - Start Point (Just Not Normal, 2010)

01 Moonrise at Start point
02 Alienative
03 Antidistance recalculator

For as long as I can remember Rob Solheim aka Muied Lumens has been an active participant in the solstice marathons over at Electro Music. Still for some reason it has taken up untill now for Rob to release his first ever full featured album. And boy are we proud at JNN to be the host of this very first sublime album.
As Rob states in one of his emails to me: “It has kick started something that I have been missing for a while – which is to make composed stuff instead of just playing live material. I will continue doing more tracks as and when I have time”.
The world of CC music has just gained a new fantastic artist in its mids.
