Talvihorros - Solo Guitar Improvisation II (Rural Colours, 2011)

1 Solo Guitar Improvisation II 16:43

'Solo Guitar Improvisation II' is the first release of 2011 from the enigmatic Talvihorros who has previous releases on Hibernate, My Dance The Skull & Benbecula.

The track was recorded in a single live take with no overdubs and minimal post-production. A prepared electric guitar, played with various objects including battery-operated devices such as the Ebow, Buddha Machine and a shortwave radio, then sent through a complex chain of effects pedals and loopers.

The result is a rich tapestry of textures, guitar melodies and waves of static combining to create a unique and modern take on live guitar improvisation.

Hat Melter - Unknown Album (Crouton, 2003)

1 Untitled 15:45
2 Untitled 17:10

Crouton weeps with joy over this new release featuring Steve Hess, percussion; Jeff Klatt, cello; Jon Mueller, percussion; and Matt Turner, cello. Together they form ‘Hat Melter’, and quite literally too, as their names suggest. Although beyond the coincidence of the selective letters of their names, this group also combines elements of each others’ instruments to create a record of rich, vibrant sound - loaded with the texture of strings, and the melody of percussion. Strange, yes, and so is the record. The initial recordings were captured in a live setting. The cello work of Matt Turner, who is regarded as one of the world’s leading improvising cellists (as featured on Meniscus, Stellar, O.O. Discs, Asian Improv, Rastascan, Geode, and Cadence), is top notch, and is complemented wholeheartedly by vibrant cellist and recent composition graduate Jeff Klatt. Steve Hess and Jon Mueller, known Chicago and Milwaukee area percussionists, play harmonies with their cymbals, and grind Styrofoam through box fans. The results of this live session were then taken back to C. Rosenau’s studio, segmented, and analog constructed into new developments - segments as heard from the ‘ear’ of one room mic, strings picked up by snare drum mics - a reassignment of the flow of vibrations, and the feeling of ‘moments’ being pulled out of a magic hat. The end result is a record of switched sound characteristics, mixed emotions, and combined names that reveals a mysterious, often dark labyrinth of unknown sound. Two side long tracks, each with no name - unknown first by the players, and finally the listener...
Crouton

A platter of black vinyl packaged in an unmarked black cardboard jacket, with only a strip of paper disclosing some information: this is Hat Melter's Unknown Album. The group consists of four American improvisers: two cellists (Matt Turner and Jeff Klatt) and two percussionists (Jon Mueller and Steve Hess). At the heart of this album is a free improvisation, but what we hear through these two side-long pieces is a different story -- to be more precise, a different perspective. The pieces have been reshaped and re-sourced by Chris Rosenau (Telecognac, Collections of Colonies of Bees). Instruments are heard from other musicians' microphones, events have been resequenced, the whole listening experience is reconstructed following another person's point of view. It results in a fascinating but highly dizzying album. For example, at one point on side two, the quartet is split into two cello/drums duets, each isolated in its stereo channel and "heard" from a distance. A cello moves front stage center and a few seconds later everyone gets tucked away in the right channel. The technique recalls René Lussier's CD Deboutonné, where the sound engineer had the possibility to mix the input of a dozen microphones placed in and outside the recording booth, but in that case the performance was left unaltered, only the sonic perspective changed. Here, we don't know where performance ends and studio construction begins. It makes for very dynamic music, despite the highly abstract nature of the original improvisation -- which should be included as a bonus track if this album ever gets released on CD.

Daniel Barbiero, Gary Rouzer & Chris Videll - Indigo Over Red On Grey (Electronic Musik, 2011)

1 Indigo Over Red On Grey

Indigo over Red on Grey represents one event in an ongoing collaboration among Daniel Barbiero (prepared & unprepared double bass),Gary Rouzer (amplified textures & field recordings), and Chris Videll, aka Tag Cloud (sound sculpture, processing & mixing). Combining diversely-sourced sound elements into audio atmospheres of varying rarefaction, Barbiero/Rouzer/Videll explore the ways in which conventional and extended string techniques can interact with readymade sounds, amplified objects and digital processing.

Indigo over Red on Grey is an electroacoustic exquisite corpse in which a double bass improvisation served as a foundation track inrelation to which sound processing and field recordings were created in a double-blind process, after which all three tracks were combined and mixed.

Clayton Thomas is a double bassist and grass roots organiser working in the broad spectrum of improvised music. Equally at home playing at high, medium and starkly reduced energy levels, he finds inspiration in creative music and musicians of all generations. He is the founder of The Splinter Orchestra, the NOW now festival and the concert series 'if you like improvised music, we like you." in Sydney, Australia. "I'm trying to work out a physical activity equally engaged in electronic and acoustic music aesthetics, while maintaining the kind of transitional and transformative energy of the music that changed my life. I draw inspiration from creative music of all eras, happily learning from and engaging with improvisers, sound artists, composers and thinkers alive and kicking in the 21st century. I have been inspired and pushed by many great musicians, but would especially thank Jon Rose, Jim Denley, Andrew Meisel, Cooper-Moore, Tony Buck and Hollis Taylor for doing some real work on the topic. All my music is dedicated to my first teachers, Wilber Morris and Peter Kowald." (text collected from Ausland)

RE:KONSTRUKT - Istanbul Improvised Music Label (Audition Records, 2011)

After our recently visit to Istanbul, our 3rd document is a promotional compilation of the catalogue of re:konstruKt label curated by Umut Çağlar. 39 tracks of 39 releases. Enjoy the music!

Umut Çağlar, is a musician from Istanbul, Turkey, interested in improvised music in all the formats. One of his main projects is the band Konstrukt . Konstrukt was founded to play improvised music in 2008. The lineup is Umut Çağlar (guitar), Korhan Futacı (saxophones), and two drum players, Korhan Argunden, and Ozun Usta also as percussionist. The band has already released several albums, recorded and performed with Peter Brötzmann, Marshall Allen ( Sun Ra Arkestra), Evan Parker, Jürg Solothurnmann, Eugene Chadbourne and the horn players of the dutch big band Bik Bent Braam... Having the chance of collaborate with local and international musicians, Umut Çağlar promotes performances and recordings moving around from total noise to total improv concerts. In re:konstrukt they are open to all the venues while improv still there as the essence and principal axe of the music environment created by the combination of different backgrounds.
Interview with Umut Çağlar Istanbul, 07.01.2010

Talk us about improvised music scene in Istanbul?
Improvised music scene in Istanbul is very fresh actually. There were some personal attends or efforts by many musicans like in the beggining of 80's, or in the middle 90's. But the oldest band right now performing can be Islak Köpek (Wet dog) which is from 6 years ago by Korhan Erel, Şevket Akıncı, Volkan Terzioğlu and Volkan Ergen. And before that in the history of the turkish improvised music scene the first record recorded by a turkish musician is not recorded in Turkey, but in the USA by the famous painter Hüseyin Ertunç, who has lived in Los Angeles in that time, and he recorded with Phil Musra and Michael Cosmic a trio album which came out on, I don't remember the label. The album name was "Musiki", which means music in ottoman language, in 1974. After that nothing happened in free jazz turkish scene, but, with the help of some free jazz artists who came for concerts like Albert Mangelsdorf (late 70's) and in the beginning of 80´s, Sun Ra Arkestra; people get use to this kind of avant-garde sounds and then, as i call, Murat Taner, who is also responsable and started me playing guitar in early 80`s and made connections with the music of Ornette Coleman and John Coltrane at a very earliest ages of mind. He has just came from the USA and tried to collect young musicians, his friends and collegues, and then I remember in 1989 we first performed a live free jazz performance in a big hall, and you know, it was like a disaster of the moment. We were very young. We were not actually very able to perform well our instruments.

After this there were many different kind of collaborations, like in the beginning of 90's with the band Zen who became Baba Zula later, or also like the band which i played Maximal Punch Effect with the saxofonist Bülent Tangay and Osman Özkan who plays trumpet. Also there was this guy, who lives now in Berlin 2/5BZ aka Serhat Köksal; we were doing in that time some improvising sessions of avant-garde music... is hard to call it jazz... it was more kind of industrial, new wave... and we played for 6 to 8 hours most stuff in that sessions. A lot of musicians were there every week. But there are no records, there is no footage, there are not pictures from this events which let me to archive the evolution on this process.
The need to collect and archive let me found my own label. My first aim was to make and archive, then, as i said, this band, Islak Köpek came. There more in the free improv vein in general. Is hard to call free jazz, because we can tell that they play with the sensibility of a modern chamber orchestra. The instrumentation is two saxofonist players,, one guitar player and electronics and many times additional musicians, like cello or violin. After then, two years ago, in 2008 we founded Konstrukt with our collegues. The older drum player Korhan Argüden was on the concert in 1989, my first free jazz concert. In this two years we built a good acknowledgment by the help of internet. And we had the chance to performed in the biggest festival of Turkey. And there we have the chance to meet Evan Parker.

In Akbank Jazz Festival?
Yes, in Akbank Jazz Festival in 2009 and 2010. We performed live with Bik Bent Braam and Evan Parker . We also have the chance to make a recording with Marshall Allen the director of Sun Ra Arkestra . Little by little we try to built a scene. Now we can tell we have a pool of musicians, around 20 to 25 musicians in total. Some of them are very busy playing gigs outside Europe like Korhan Erel, Oguz Büyükberber and Selen Gülün... We try to collaborate in diferents formats to make recordings with people who visit Istanbul. I tried to release all this recordigns through re:konstrukt label. For this two years has been a nice collection of work.

There were three names that captured my atention before coming to Istanbul, we talked already about re:konstrukt label and konstruK. Tell us now something about Melting Pot.
Melting Pot was the reflection of this collaborations wich led us to invite more people who was not involved in free improvisation or in re:konstrukt Label. Then we formed like several duos and trios with the musicians who were not already recorded with us... and a radio show host... AÇIK Radio of Istanbul, Yaprak Melike Uyar hosted this performances in the studio at the radio, and then we recorded all and we choosed the good ones and compiled a cd. We tried to release as a cd, but the cost were very high... then Yaprak wrote to the Wire Magazine and the Wire Magazine distributed this total format album to the online subscribers in 2010 in december issue.

It has been a good reaction from outside how do people also were interested in Istanbul anyway, because there was this cultural center of Europe in 2010. People were hearing about Istanbul so much around this time. People were not aware of something like this happening here. It helped a lot to recognize new works. And then when I started re:konstrukt label nights at Istanbul we evolved into the first event as Melting Pot. We played like forth quartets in all the night. It was an epic little happening. A kind of mini festival... Melting Pot history is like that... and it has become in a good challenge for all the musicians who are involved or not... together mixing their ideas.

Daniel Barbiero – Monuments Seen Through Peripheral Vision (Just Not Normal, 2010)

01 Monuments seen through peripheral vision
02 Listen to the room
03 Violet grey black on blue

A native of New Haven, CT, Daniel Barbiero has been involved in creative improvised music in the Baltimore-Washington area for several years as a performer, composer, and sometime bandleader. He has worked in a variety of contexts, including modal and post-bop jazz, free improvisation, and world fusion drawing on the Indian classical and Middle Eastern musical traditions.

Fans of NTNS radio know that I have a strong taste for free improv jazz, where the likes of D’Incise and many others have passed the airwaves. It is with great honor that I may introduce this fine gentleman that provides the JNN airwaves with a very strong free jazz sound that is interspersed with field recordings and all kinds of other background noises that have one big commonfactor; the sensuous sounds of the standup bass. It is just delicious!
