Spheruleus - Debris (Audio Gourmet, 2011)

1 Debris #1 06:27
2 Debris #2 06:03
3 Debris #3 07:29
4 Debris #4 03:51

For the first Spheruleus outing of 2011, Audio Gourmet label curator Harry Towell has scoured his hard-drive to put together a collection of tracks that are born out of unfinished samples and discarded parts of previous projects. They have been presented as a four track EP which is aptly titled 'Debris'.

The source material was drawn from the usual collection of instrument samples that Towell's work typically comprises of, although heavily processed with 'vintage' style ambient production techniques. The resulting soundtrack is loose and drifting with moments of hiss and static - a production style that you might not always associate with the work of Spheruleus.
The aim was to draw out the near 24 minute duration as long as possible, giving the impression of time standing still and allowing these otherwise unused sounds a chance to have their 'day'.

2011 is to be a big year for Spheruleus, with CD album 'Voyage' scheduled for release on Hibernate this summer and another short album coming out on Resting Bell at the end of February. Not to mention the debut Paper Relics album recorded with brother Stuart due out in March/April...

Simon Whetham - Cold Shoulder (Audio Gourmet, 2011)

1 Cold Shoulder (Part 1.1) 02:51
2 Cold Shoulder (Part 1.3) 07:19
3 Cold Shoulder (Part 2) 06:45

Simon Whetham has been capturing and composing almost primarily with field recordings since taking part in a research trip to Iceland in 2005.
Since then he has been gaining a steadily increasing profile: exhibiting in Iceland; recording in the Amazon Rainforest of Brazil; performing at a large number of festivals and events, both nationally and internationally, notably the recent Madeiradig 2010; having work accepted for release by labels such as Cronica, And/OAR, Dragon's Eye, Con-V, Trente Oiseaux, 1000fussler, Mystery Sea, Entr’acte, Install, Lens and Gruenrekorder; commissioned by Creative Labs to build a surround sound installation to demonstrate their equipment and software; commissioned by painter Kathryn Thomas to compose a surround soundtrack to accompany her ‘Lightyears’ series of exhibitions; producing radio works for Resonance FM, Overlap.org and Kunst Radio Austria; and invited to participate in two residencies at the Art Container in Tallinn, Estonia, the second to compose new work, collaborate with other artists using sound and run deep listening, field recording and compostion workshops.
This residency has resulted in ‘Active Crossover’, a touring exhibition and exchange project which continues to tour through 2011 in four further exhibition spaces across the UK.
Future events and projects also include a performance at Experimental Intermedia in New York, and running field recording workshops in Bogota, Columbia.

Simon is based in Bristol, UK, where he has lived on and off for 14 years. Whilst much of his work is based around his travels, Simon took time out to record some sounds within his locality to make up an Audio Gourmet EP called 'Cold Shoulder'...
For four months Simon lived facing an industrial area of Bristol called St. Philips, where on quiet evenings he would wander around the buildings, listening to the city, but from somewhere very still and lifeless compared to it's daytime activity. Of course, as we all know, these areas are never silent. These nocturnal sounds of an area, normally crashingly loud, are the raw materials of 'Cold Shoulder (Parts 1 and 2)'
Simon has also put together a bonus track continuing from where he left off with this EP and it will be available to download as part of a forthcoming compilation album here on Audio Gourmet.

Listening Mirror - Wet Roads (Audio Gourmet, 2011)

1 Wet Roads 09:04
2 The Organist 08:44

In just a year of operation, Listening Mirror's Jeff Stonehouse and Kate Tustain have managed to put together a solid foundation to their discography with EPs out on Rural Colours and Heat Death Records. Their debut album then followed on Somehow Recordings later in 2010.

Sadly for the duo, Kate has decided to call it a day as part of Listening Mirror for personal reasons, leaving Jeff to carry forward the project. For one last excursion as the Listening Mirror duo, Jeff and Kate have assembled a two track EP called 'Wet Roads' to commemorate their work. The pieces act as bookends, with 'Wet Roads' being the very first piece of music they recorded together and 'The Organist' being the last.
To some of you, 'The Organist' in particular may feel quite familiar; this could be because a one minute edit was featured on the Audio Gourmet Coffee Break Ambient EP released last year.

Whilst this EP will always serve as space to reflect on how their sound first started out, we can thankfully anticipate a bright future for Listening Mirror as Jeff fully intends to carry forward the project.
The first solo excursion penned for release is to be a 3" cdr EP in an A3 folded poster, recorded as a tribute to the late Throbbing Gristle legend Peter Christopherson. This will be out very soon on Heat Death Records:
www.heatdeathrecords.co.uk

A final word from Jeff on this EP: "I'll miss Kate's input, the beauty and talent of which is evident in both of these tracks. We remain good friends, and I wish her the very best in her new adventures."

The Inventors Of Aircraft - Lull (Audio Gourmet, 2011)

1 The Depths (Don't Be Scared) 02:43
2 The Arc Of Visibility 06:12
3 Back and Fill 06:28

The Inventors of Aircraft is a London based music project helmed by Phil Tomsett and here with 'Lull' we are proud to present three tracks of fine ambient music, themed around the sea.

With 2008 debut 'Unknown Language' out on the old Serein netlabel and then last year's follow up 'As It Is' on Resting Bell, the Inventors Of Aircfraft project is slowly gathering momentum. It is inching along further still with the inclusion of the three-track EP 'Lull', here on Audio Gourmet.

'Lull' was recorded during what turned out to be some fairly intense sessions in Phil's studio between December 2010 and January 2011. Through these sessions, around 15 pieces of music were collated at various states of completion and it then became an issue as to which he would choose to fit the bill for a fifteen minute Audio Gourmet EP.
Throughout the recording process, Phil became unintentionally aware of some kind of sea voyage theme, with flickering imagery of giant ships hauling themselves away from the quayside and powering through the water running through his imagination.
When the sessions were complete and the time came to chose the final three tracks for the EP, the sea voyage theme had remained. This prompted the overiding nautical theme to be written into the track titles and the cover artwork too.

Phil would like to extend his gratitude to Ian Hawgood who showed amazing speed and dexterity with the mastering on 'Lull'.
As with the Resting Bell album 'As It Is', Ian's mastering job really brings the EP alive...

Jukka Vakkinen-Kannonen - Improvisaatioita Kanssa Siniaanet (Audio Gourmet, 2011)

1 Yksi 07:44
2 Kaksi 05:37

Jukka Vakkinen-Kannonen is a former TV documentary director who currently lives in Tampere, Finland. He now works as a computer technician assisting small architecture studios with IT services.

Initially intrigued by the work of local heroes Pansonic and Mika Vainio and then later by the work of György Ligeti, Iannis Xenakis, Arne Nordheim and Bernard Günter, Jukka started to perform and record short improvisations using sine waves and field recordings that he originally captured for his documentaries.

To accompany his work, he refers to the texts of German philosopher Martin Heidegger "...a place that the ideas and sensibility behind what I do seem to perceive as very familiar."

After four years and many hours of archived sounds accumulated through improvised sessions, he decided to edit them into a two-piece sound release titled Improvisaatioita Kanssa Siniaanet which simply means 'Improvisations With Sine Waves'
What is interesting with Jukka's work is that instead of the at times irritating and shrill sound that we often associated with sine waves, he has painstakingly carved out a pair of viscous soundscapes that manage to coax out a sense of calm and transition between his several years' worth of source material.
Audio Gourmet

Transition seems to be Vakkinen-Kannonen's main concern when working with sound as we can learn from his quotes below:

"The notion of time is acquired in the passage from one moment to another not in the moment itself."

"Sine waves seem to end nowhere and start never."

Coldstream - The Asleep (Audio Gourmet, 2011)

1 The Asleep 04:54
2 Delivery 05:40
3 10, 11, 9 04:22

Coldstream is the ambient-music project name of London based sound artist Dan Mumford.
He has previously released his work through the likes of the marvellous Under The Spire and Rural Colours imprints and now for Audio Gourmet, he has turned his creative ears towards putting together this short EP called 'The Asleep'.

As the title suggests, this body of work is themed closely around sleep and dreams - a much explored and familiar concept throughout the ambient music scenes.
It is not something that you'd associate with the classic fifteen minute EP duration...all too often this topic is reserved for the longer, more explorative duration of the full CD-length album.
In this short timeframe however, Dan has managed to weave in a wealth of dreamy mystery within three heady drones. They can be listened to late at low volume, inducing a lulling sleepy state or at a louder volume for a more conscious exploration of his thoroughly melodic work.

To round this EP off, we have been allowed by a photographer and artist called Georgina Richardson to use an image for the front cover that really encapsulates the loosely defined conceptual intentions of 'The Asleep'...

Tone Color - Today Will Not Be Like Tomorrow (Audio Gourmet, 2011)

1 Less Than Zero 07:09
2 Perpetual Sunlight 02:17
3 Vemod 03:19
4 Saudade 03:38

With a four-strong collection of ambient tracks derived from fragments of midi files and unfinished tunes that date back several years, we welcome Tone Color to the Audio Gourmet netlabel catalog.

Tone Color is Manchester based artist Andy Lomas, whose influences of Brian Eno, Harold Budd, Ulrich Schnauss, Raster Noton, Cocteau Twins, Ymo and 12k spill into his work which takes on a loosely ambient/electronica feel on the whole.
He has had work featured on a compilation album on Earth Monkey back in 2007 and also, he contributed a minute-long piece for our Coffee Break Ambient compilation that was released last year.

It is from the piece for the Coffee Break compilation 'Less Than Zero' that we began discussing the possibility of a full 15 minute Tone Color EP to come out on Audio Gourmet. Andy provided us with the full length original version of this and took the time to shape the fragments of sound on his computer into the soundscapes that make up this fantastic EP.

Paper Relics - Recovered Artefact (Audio Gourmet, 2010)

1 Paper Relics - Razed 02:46
2 Embers 04:38
3 Salvaged From The Ruins 03:43
4 Requiem For Home 04:41

Paper Relics are brothers Harry and Stuart Towell from a small town in Lincolnshire UK, called Bourne.
As well as running the Audio Gourmet netlabel Harry is a sound designer recording as Spheruleus.
Stuart is a self taught multi guitarist with several years' experience.
As Paper Relics, the brothers manage to combine their differing musical backgrounds as a hybrid of Stuart's blues, jazz, rock and folk influence and Harry's involvement within the modern ambient music scene.

Here we present their debut EP 'Recovered Artefacts', which should serve as a light introduction to their sound and nod towards the arrival of their first full album, which will be out later in the year.

Thematically, this EP is based around a photograph of the Malvern Hills that was taken by Stuart on a weekend away. After treating the image to make it look antiquated, the pair agreed on the title 'Recovered Artefact' as with the addition of vintaging effects, it looked very much like an old and long forgotten photograph.

After arranging the tracks into order, the duo began to think about what they felt the EP was trying to say as a package of music and treated photographic imagery. They got a vision of an elderly man discovering this old photograph of the tiny town he grew up in. Throughout the decades of his lifetime, the man had watched it change completely with constant industrial and commercial development turning the beautiful village it once was into a large and busy town.

'Recovered Artefact' tells the story of a man and his town as he reflects over the years of change and development that has turned this once picturesque village into something he no longer recognises...
Audio Gourmet

Paper Relics is an experimental music project recently formed by brothers Harry and Stuart Towell. While Stuart is a self taught multi-instrumentalist in his own right, readers will likely be more familiar with Harry's work, both for his own ambient/drone music under the moniker Spheruleus and as curator of the Audio Gourmet netlabel In Paper Relics, both brothers are given a chance to explore their mutual musical interests to their fullest extent.

The title of Recovered Artefact and indeed of the band itself, bring to mind images of reminiscence and of the passing of time and it is this mood which surrounds this debut EP, proving to be wistful and melancholic without becoming maudlin. The guitar work has an experimental flavour and in its makeup there are influences of blues, jazz and folk. When considering Stuart has found his way onto previous Spheruleus material and that Harry writes music in a broadly similar style himself, it is notable that Paper Relics has an identity of its own. The brothers narrate a story with the all-instrumental music and each track revolves around the artists unhurried guitar playing, often taking the form of Harry choosing to strum acoustic guitar chord shapes while his sibling plays electric lead, both in a loose laid back manner and usually joined by field recordings and found sounds.

There is something particularly satisfying when listening to music of high quality which still contains the occasional minor blemish such as a note not quite perfectly fingered or a scrape of the frets and this helps to give the EP an authentic and perhaps even a retrospective feel, harking back to a time before digital recording techniques could give an unnatural sheen to music. Recovered Artefact represents an honest account of the talent and the technique behind Paper Relics and is all the stronger for it.

Gimu - Beluga (Audio Gourmet, 2010)

1 Beluga 1
2 Beluga 2

For the final Audio Gourmet EP release of the year, we welcome a little-known sound designer from Brazil called Gimu. His earlier music career was based around a pop/electronic band called 'Terrorturbo', in which he was lead singer. As the members of the band went their separate ways over time, Gimu found himself left alone and unsure as to what would be his next move.

It was at this time, that he'd grown very tired of lugging equipment around, endless wires, instruments and even of the sorts of chord progressions and conventional aspects of playing that had been the mainstay of the band.
He had in fact grown tired of writing 'songs' altogether and began to seek new methods of artistic expression through sound.
He decided to strip away all of the structure and rhythm of these 'songs' for his solo work, concentrating on ambient soundscapes with a focus on repetition. He began a fascination with how repetition can take you to a new level of consciousness to the point where you suddenly feel as if you are listening to things that may not even be present in the recording.

For his debut EP here on Audio Gourmet, Gimu has assembled two beautiful tracks that are a perfect representation of the sort of soundscapes he has been inspired to produce in his quest as a solo sound artist.
Through the two tracks on 'Beluga', Gimu tributes this work to close friend Patricia; a constant voice of encouragement and support to his music. This soundtrack is thematically based around the dead dreams of a biologist, the ocean and hope...

We hope you enjoy this body of work and keep an eye out for future output from this emerging talent!

Herzog - Small Loves (Audio Gourmet, 2010)

1 Small Loves 04:27
2 Aubade 05:21
3 Once They Know 05:03

Herzog is the solo artist project of Bill Bawden from South London, UK. Many will be familiar with his work on the likes of Resting Bell, Serein and 12Rec and we are fortunate to be able to bring his latest work to you through Audio Gourmet.

'Small Loves' is a short set of musical vignettes inspired from childhood. For example, the front cover is a photograph taken from the artist's bedroom window, reminding of watching rain droplets 'race each other' across a car window whilst on a long journey. In fact, it was the auditory memories of rain/car/radio/motorway that inspired Bill to craft this sonic portrait of that moment in time.

The main musical influences for the work of Herzog are cited as being Fennesz, William Basinski and Colleen as well as bands such as Low, Mogwai and The Microphones. Bill's musical tastes are eclectic however and so influences can come from almost anywhere.

These many musical influences bleed into the work of Herzog, as a melting pot of different tones and textures. The three tracks that make up 'Small Loves' were created from a simple acoustic loop, which was manipulated for a long time until something different and unexpected was coaxed out of it to form the backbone of each piece. Many of the clicks and pops that arise through the process of cutting up the various samples have been retained, making for subtle extra detail. Over-distortion and clipping effects have been put back into the mix, at a lower volume to further extend the textures you can hear in 'Small Loves'

I am told that Herzog is slowly working on his first full length album, so much to look forward to! For the meantime, feel free to explore and enjoy this magnificent EP....

Headaches - Itsoundslike (Audio Gourmet, 2010)

1 Itsoundslike (Part One) 07:55
2 Itsoundslike (Part Two) 05:35

Next up on Audio Gourmet, we've this stunning 2 part drone EP from Headaches, called 'It sounds like'

Landon Speers, the guy behind Headaches gives a few words on the creative process behind this body of work:

"The track is one form of a semi-improvisational piece that can be played with many different outcomes. In an effort to utilize aleatory in my work, I put together 96 samples from a Casio keyboard. I arranged them into eight groups of twelve melodic elements ranging from lows to highs. Each group can be played/programmed separately or in unison with any other of the eight groups. Altering how samples are played, the piece can take on various forms; from slow and droning to fast and percussive, rendering the potential for as many ways to perform it as there are chances too."

And describing the sound he creates, Landon says:

"it sounds like the process of dying and my particles turning into light and they're shooting up to the sun- they keep going faster and faster until they reach space where things start to slow down; not because im actually moving slower but because the scale of everything is growing and im getting smaller along it- the track starts getting more distant and icey as it tails off and eventually im away from everything familiar and theres a sense of isolation and cold ive never known and then it all just sort of dissipates into…"

Maps And Diagrams - Tintinnbulate (Audio Gourmet, 2010)

1 Komagataella 02:41
2 Irma's Injection 04:10
3 Two Centuries 04:11
4 Cucullospora 03:30

Maps and Diagrams "Tintinnbulate" is released on the Audio Gourmet label in November 2010. The work is a continuation of the conceptual drone-based sounds of "Koom" and "Foel" that was released on the Handstitched* imprint in 2009. This continuation sees the recycled use of original source material, layers and processed sound created during the making of the pre-mentioned releases.

Collectively, "Tintinnbulate" as a body of work travels and drifts through a distant rumble and sub-level murmur which force dense fragments of distorted melody from within the body of each piece - this content remains intentionally corroded and disjointed from the human ear - cascading into more a more audible, crystalline landscape.

Each piece is framed within its own floating horizon; it appears visible close-up but subsequently out-of-focus at the furthest point. In the layering of sound there is the natural aspect of field recordings, continuous static and human-influence which surround the listener and create a vast expanse of experimental and applied sound.

Carl Sagan's Ghost - Before I Go (Audio Gourmet, 2010)

1 Before I Go (Part One)
2 Before I Go (Part Two)

For our 24th release, we are delighted to welcome Carl Sagan's Ghost to the Audio Gourmet netlabel catalog.

Carl Sagan's Ghost is Daniel Davis from the USA who has had work released on Earth Mantra, Soft Phase, Circlesandlines and Luxus-Arctica Records International. Since the early nineties, Daniel has been heavily involved with music of varying styles from ska bands right through to the beautifully crafted ambient soundscapes he has built a reputation for recently.

Although he possesses an immense talent with producing ambient, as an artist he feels that he shouldn't focus entirely on one style of music.
So he has just a couple more ambient releases scheduled for release before he heads off in a different direction with other musical projects and ideas.
'Before I Go' is one of the last projects as Carl Sagan's Ghost for the time being and is an aptly titled ambient/drone EP in two parts. For Audio Gourmet it represents a slight change in style of ambient, after the recent dark and more vacant material. It is warm, refreshing and thoroughly well put together...

Alex Durlak - Lowing (Audio Gourmet, 2010)

1 Lowing (Section 1)
2 Lowing (Section 2)
3 Lowing (Section 3)

Next up on Audio Gourmet, something a little different from Toronto based artist and musician Alex Durlak.
Alex is responsible for running a printing company and record label, Standard Form. It is here where the 'Rural Route' 3" CD series is based, with the label's curation being managed by Damian Valles.
The entire Rural Route catalog is manufactured in-house and it was here where Alex Durlak had his first release.

So to the follow up to his work on Rural Route...a 15 minute EP of gritty bass guitar drones which will please fans of dark ambient, drone and experimental music. This EP entitled 'Lowing', was constructed entirely with a bass guitar which was ran through a self-written granular synthesis patch in real-time.
There was no additional processing and editing was kept to a minimum as to preserve the integrity of the performance.
Given the minimalist production techniques, this 3 track EP turns out to be surprisingly detailed as a whole. There is an air of mystery to the recordings that is underpinned throughout by a wealth of powerful gritty elements.

As is often the case, a brief 15 minute excursion on the Audio Gourmet netlabel will usually serve as a warm up for something bigger lined up by the artist...and Alex has informed me that his next venture will be a one sided 12" record as the first part of a new series called 'Long Form'. This will be on Standard Form; curated by Alex himself.

Hessien - Broken (Audio Gourmet, 2010)

1 Passing You-Bye 05:43
2 500ml 04:55
3 Fly South For The Winter 03:59

The muffled voices in the walls and the murmurs behind doors of Hessien continue on "Broken" — the new release on Audio Gourmet. Something of a departure from recently released material, this outing sees a subdued and distant approach to the melancholic side of implied melody.

The dirty windows display looped field recordings, sustained acoustic delay and the fragile vocals of Jane Sage; the dark hallways are layered, wide-open passages that create the impression of motion. The rotting staircase is flickering static and kaleidoscopic distortion, leaning into organic textures and echoing reverb; all affected with a layered, instrumental composition that gives the sense of coming from or going to a faraway place.

The letters under the floorboards are the three tracks waiting to be uncovered —three compositions leaning towards organic textures and blissful drones. They remain disguised until they are eventually discovered, released from imagination.

The rustling in the bushes indicate that Hessien are currently finalising their debut album, due out in Autumn/Winter 2010.

The bones in the backyard mean that "Home Is Where The Ghost Is" is released on Handstitched*; an ultra—limited CD run of 100 copies, packaged in digipack CD wallets with artwork by zenbullets.

David Velez - Vacío Retórico (Audio Gourmet, 2010)

1 Division 1 06:12
2 Division 2 07:51

David Velez is a Colombian sound artist whose work focusses on the use of field recordings, dealing with textures, landscapes and objects. His work has been released on labels such as Test Tube, Ripples Recordings, Mandorla and Rain Music among others and he is also a staffer on the field-recordings based label Impulsive Habitat.

Currently residing in Bogotá, David is taking a Master in Fine Arts where he is focusing on sound installations. Through this ongoing Master David developed the idea towards art that in some places rhetoric is more important than the actual work itself and this concept gave the title to this release.

'Vacío Retórico' is as good an example you're likely to hear of the kind of high quality field recordings based sound work that David Velez is renowned and respected for; it is a sheer pleasure to have an artist of his calibre grace our catalog.

Deep Into Perspectives - The Lost Tapes (Audio Gourmet, 2010)

1 Abandoned Town 04:39
2 Morphing Dream 05:24
3 Lucid Glass 04:54

Deep Into Perspectives is ambient and experimental artist Kent Nymann, hailing from Oslo, Norway. Through ambient drones, melodic elements and field recordings, he intends to search for pure artistic expression.
All sounds are handcrafted and layered gradually during the production process, eventually serving as dense, detailed soundscapes as each finished piece is completed.

Deep Into Perspectives has served us this three track exploration of a more pure ambient sound, specifically trailored for Audio Gourmet. The basis of these were formed from past recordings Kent had in his 'vault' of sound, and then gradually built upon through several layers of newly recorded accent takes. Thus, 'The Lost Tapes' have been born, free for your enjoyment...

Kent Nymann has been prolific as an artist over the last few years, with several pieces of electronic sound experiments available for streaming via his Myspace page:

Lexithimie - I Rather Die Terrified (Audio Gourmet, 2010)

1 Flesh and Stones 08:41
2 Glass and Blood 06:08

Next up on Audio Gourmet, we welcome French ambient sound designer Alexis Bechu, under his Lexithimie artist banner. Over the last year or so, he's had some excellent work released on Hibernate, Resting Bell and Rural Colours to name but a few, with his output spanning a wide range of dense drones and field recordings. Now for Audio Gourmet, Alexis has put together this two track EP that sees him head in a darker direction with the main concept being to try to get the listener to confront their deepest fears face on.

The soundscapes here are dense, dark and murky but there is plenty of detail throughout these two pieces to get to grips with. Chimes, glitching electronic sound effects and field recordings serve to punctuate the atmospheric drones to be found within this EP, with interluding moments of suspense adding balance to the overall body of work.

Specta Cira - Meadow Return (Audio Gourmet, 2010)

1 Hiding In The Low Lands 04:57
2 Foot Bridge 06:12
3 Disappearing 02:59

Specta Ciera is a project pseudonym of American experimental sound designer Devin Underwood.
His work typically comprises of ambient drones, field recordings and avant garde electronics, although he is keen to experiment through different techniques as each release comes out.

Throughout his discography, Devin has self released his material periodically and has albums signed to labels such as Distance Recordings, Project 168, Secret Station, Circles and Lines Recordings, Luxus-Arctica Records and most recently, Earth Mantra.

His most recent production to date, is this 15 minute 3 track EP for Audio Gourmet, 'Meadow Returns'.
It opens with the graceful yet quirky 'Hiding In The Lowlands', featuring gentle sprinklings of piano composition, sprawled with electronic synth manipulations. This piece sets the scene in a warm and light hearted fashion, before the following pieces 'Foot Bridge' and 'Disappearing' explore more minimal, field recordings based territory.

This is a truly fantastic EP from Specta Ciera and we're delighted to bring this talented sound designer to your ears via Audio Gourmet.
