Where have I been?!

For over a year I have not properly blogged here (just the odd very infrequent update) and some of you may have been wondering where I went and why I dropped off the face of the planet! It may have surprised a lot of you since for about 5 years I updated this blog very frequently.

So, here's the truth, the complete truth, and it's a long read!

A year ago something catastrophic happened to me. It was so painful that it's taken me this long to want to come back to blogging properly and really resume business as usual. What the heck happened?! I'll tell you...
I was sitting at my computer one day and all of a sudden the folder I was saving some work in looked empty. I was like "hey, where did my files just go?" I clicked out of that folder and explored the rest of that hard-drive where I kept all my work, and found that none of the folders opened.... panic started to rise from the tips of my toes throughout my whole body, and I waited nervously for my computer-wiz friend to come over and help me check out what was happening. He couldn't even get the hard-drive to open and see any info. Now, this hard-drive contained absolutely all of my work - my entire portfolio of miniatures for both Hummingbird Miniatures and Pixie Dust Miniatures, and also all family photos, and all photos in general in my life. But most of all it was my portfolio going back 5 years - when I started creating and photographing my miniature work. I felt an enormous sense of panic because I knew I hadn't backed up for 6 months. I was terrified to the pit of my stomach that I could potentially lose 6 months work (for me that represented thousands of images, my book 'The Art of Pixie Dust Miniatures' I had been writing and was almost complete, tutorials I'd created and so forth. Nooooooooooooo, please don't let that work be lost, I kept saying to him! We took it to the best place for data recovery in LA (and don't forget, most of the best computer developments come out of California so I knew I was putting it into very safe hands).

Things couldn't get much worse... or could they...?

I went over to another hard-drive where everything (except the past 6 months) was backed up. Just wanted to browse it and feel a bit better.

... Nothing was there.

My housemate had at some point moved it  / wiped it / who knows. He didn't know where it went. Basically it was gone. The only place my entire miniature portfolio existed was on the hard-drive that stopped working. And that was in the hands of these data recovery guys. I waited for their verdict with my heart in my stomach and sheer dread.

They got back to me weeks later. "It's dead" they said. "No chance of recovery". I was devastated, but wouldn't accept it. I searched out the best recovery places in the world (which also are in the US - although I'd have sent it anywhere). I paid a few thousand and sent it to them. Surely if this was crucial FBI material, something seriously important they'd be able to recover it, was what I kept telling myself. I told them I'd pay any amount, I just HAD to have all my work back (hundreds of thousands of files). I waited weeks... maybe a month. The response was negative. I tried one final place, another few thousand dollars. Nope. They could retrieve absolutely nothing at all either.

And in this time my father died suddenly without warning at the age of 61 as well.

So I gave up on my work for about 5 months. Then I managed to climb back on the horse by applying myself in a new direction. Barely creating anything for Hummingbird Miniatures or Pixie Dust Miniatures, I decided to dedicate my time to the short film I have been planning for a while. I started really creating for it in March of this year. I designed and sculpted the characters for the film, which is called 'Good Witches Bad Witches' and started blogging about them here and showing them on the Facebook page for it. It helped. :)

Eventually I also started getting back to creating miniature food again and slowly and steadily rebuilding my Hummingbird Miniatures portfolio with things such as black forest cakes new mini food jewelry and a massive detailed range of Mexican food - which was soon after published in Dolls House & Miniature Scene Magazine.

Recently I finally started creating for Pixie Dust Miniatures again as well. I created some Jack o Lanterns and listed them at my shop here.

So! I rarely (or never) talk about my private life here, but I thought I owed everyone an explanation as to where I have been and why I haven't been responsive or active on this blog, or the Hummingbird Miniatures Facebook page, aside from Instagram feeds that occasionally show up there.

But I'm back now! I will resume updating this blog and listing new items at the Hummingbird Miniatures Etsy shop. So thanks for hanging in there!

Lovely to be back. Love to all! Caroline x X x

And don't forget I have some Halloween stock at the online shop at the moment...! Orders are shipped daily, and I gift-wrap at no extra charge if you wish. :)

Happy Birthday to Me!

It's my birthday tomorrow so I decided to make myself a cake! I gave up all sugar and desserts for Lent, so it doesn't matter to me that my birthday cake isn't edible. This miniature cake is made from polymer clay (what else?!) and in once inch (1:12) scale. The candles are extremely tiny, and if you read this previous blog post you'll know that my birthday candles have became far smaller, but I use a new technique which means that they are actually far less fragile and less likely to break than birthday cake candles I have made before.

The cake is a tall one - being 4 layers of vanilla sponge and pale blue icing. It's topped with confetti and of course tiny candles.

Since we're on the topic of candles, if that interests you, you might want to take a look at my realistic pillar candles which I've made for my film company (photos here) and which can of course be bought online here.

Don't miss out on new cakes which are gradually being added to the online Hummingbird Miniatures Etsy shop here!

PS Did you know that you get free delivery if you purchase from my Hummingbird Miniatures online store on the day of your birthday? Just email me a snap of your ID that shows your date of birth and I'll grant you a birthday code for free delivery, no matter where in the world you live. The purchase must be made on your actual birthday. If you've already made a purchase on your birthday and didn't use the code then just email me and I'll send a reimbursement for shipping via PayPal.

Have a great week everyone!

Merry Christmas and Happy 2015!

Quite a belated Christmas message from me, I know! Where have I been? Well last year I got more and more busy with exhibitions and also my film company (here), that I almost decided to quit Hummingbird Miniatures for a time, to focus exclusively on making stop-motion / miniature films.

However.... I have been persuaded by some of my lovely clients not to quit entirely, so Hummingbird Miniatures will continue to have a presence here, on Facebook, and also at my online Etsy shop.

I will re-open the shop very, very soon, and I've also started creating some new special items, just for the occasion. I look forward to blogging about them and stay tuned because to thank you for your patience, the Hummingbird Miniatures shop will re-open with a very BIG SALE.... details of this will be announced here on the blog soon.

Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas / holiday season! Have a fantastic new year.

Here's a look back at a few of Hummingbird Miniatures' Christmas 2014 photos. Also, find past Christmas's here.

PS Look what I received this Christmas!! Something I have wanted for ages, ever since I saw it in the window of a little shop at an LA mall. It's a miniature hot air balloon with a wicker basket and I just love it.

Dreamworks Birthday!

I know it's been a while since I blogged here at Hummingbird Miniatures. It's been a busy year, and I often have time only to update my 'Caroline blog' or it's Facebook page these days. You can get updates more often by following those pages. :)

Anyway, recently a friend of mine had a birthday. He happens to be the Lead Concept Artist for Dreamworks, so I wanted make him my best ever miniature cake, with my new, incredibly tiny and 'unbreakable' candles*. I made the little wooden tray for it and painted the little knife with my Hummingbird Miniatures signature dots!

If you'd like a perfectly detailed tiny little birthday cake like this (or want to design your own), then send me an email or leave a comment, or find me through the Hummingbird Miniatures Facebook Page here.

* My new unbreakable candles are made using a different method and medium than I have used in the past. Because they are no longer made using polymer clay, they don't snap easily. They are handmade by myself to a high standard and are possibly the smallest miniature candles on the market. I call them 'unbreakable' because they do not break easily. If you drop your cake then the chances are the candles will not break. However, if you try to break them then I am sure you will succeed!

Cake for Cake's Sake

I am flying to England today for my sister's wedding, and I'm super excited about it! But I just wanted to share something new with you all before I fly off. I have been working on some new cake trays of all kinds and here's some photos of a finished one. It's a blue cake on a wooden painted tray and it has one of my signature Hummingbird Miniatures dotty forks. I made the trays and everything else you see.

If you're interested in purchasing one of my new cake trays (don't forget you can personalize them - choose the colour, have a birthday cake with candles / a black forest cake / a cake like this blue one with strawberries etc etc) then just email me or leave a comment and I'll arrange a commission. They're so cute and tiny (approx 1.5 " in width) and make a perfect unique gift - even for someone who does not have a dollhouse.

Don't forget about my new range of birthday cakes, coming to my online Hummingbird Miniatures Etsy shop soon!

Take a look at my 'work in progress' on this new 'Cake Tray' range below!

Number Candles, New Cakes!

Hello everyone!
Gosh, what a lot of travelling I have done this year! I have neglected Hummingbird Miniatures over the past couple of months as I was away in China and then France. But, I'm back, orders are rolling in, the online Hummingbird Miniatures shop is open and you're welcome to email me to make any request you like.

The other day I was asked to make a pink birthday cake for someone with some '5 0' candles on top, as it is for their 50th birthday. I was delighted to do this as I've never done it before. Here are some photos of the finished cake before I send it off.

If you would like to design your own specialty cake, or request a birthday cake with number candles, then please email me and place your order now.

Thanks! :)

Russian Magazine Feature!!

Hello everyone,

I hope you all had a wonderful Halloween! I haven't been on here much in the past few weeks as I have been vacationing abroad with my family (UK and Canary Isles). This is also why there was no new Halloween range from me as such this year. However, I will make it up to you with a lovely Christmas 2013 range which will become available this week.

I flew back into LA 3 days ago and was ever so excited to see that I had been featured in a Russian magazine called 'довольно куклы'! I am 1/8 Russian so it meant a lot to me.

Here's the full feature below. Hope you enjoy it.

(Anyone interested in reading a bit more about me and what else I do aside from Hummingbird Miniatures, then please feel free to find my personal blog here.)
