Hoppy (William Boyd) has his hands full as the new sheriff of a wide open town.

This includes keeping his younger brother Buddy (William Janney) out of trouble.

But it also puts him on the wrong side of a crooked saloon owner (Grant Richards) and his hired gun (Morris Ankrum).

(This film would be remade in 1941 as "Wide Open Town.")

Hoppy (William Boyd) becomes the new sheriff of the most lawless town in the territory.
He and his sidekick Windy (George "Gabby" Hayes) introduce themselves at the local saloon...

...which is owned by beautiful but bad Belle (Evelyn Brent).

Bad guy Morris Ankrum tries to intimidate Hoppy...

...but finds out quick that you don't want to be on Hoppy's bad side.

Robert Mitchum's Film Debut In A Hopalong Cassidy Western (video)




Robert Mitchum's first featured role was in "Hoppy Serves A Writ" (1943).

He was billed as "Bob Mitchum" and played an outlaw named Rigney. 

He would go on to appear in the series several more times.
