Mike is off of work for the season so he's been doing some exploring during the day. On one of his explorations, he stumbled upon a nesting eagle at the South Branch WMA, not far from our house. Of course, the two of us were determined to go back and find said eagle with our cameras in tow. That's what we did on Friday morning. We hiked down to the river, but saw no sign of the bird. We decided to sit tight for a little while and wait. Our patience paid off, and it wasn't long before the eagle appeared. We spent quite a while just sitting on the banks of the Raritan, watching the bald eagle work on its nest. Pretty cool!

After a while, we wandered off and took pictures of some of the scenery and other wild life. We spotted a great blue heron, but I didn't manage to get any photos. We also saw wood peckers, blue jays, cardinals, and a stray robin. Best of all, I got to see a Kingfisher. I had never seen one in the wild before, and while I didn't get a photo of him, it was pretty cool to watch him swooping in the river.
As it turns out, the paved trail makes for good winter dog walking, so we went back the next day with Herbie and Julio in tow. I can't believe we've been living here for two years and haven't checked out this park before!
oh my, a real blue jay. the only time i saw one was when we were in maryland.
