Gigi Gryce Quintet - The Hap'nin's

** OK just so you know up front, this is not just a posting but a plea for a better recording!!! ***
The back story is that I probably borrowed this from one of the Chicago area libraries that I strip mined for great jazz records shortly after my second awakening. Unfortunately I either did not notice, or I had no way to fix it, but the left channel is virtually non existent, leaving many fine solos as only a whisper.
I'm sure there must be one kind soul out there that can help me revise the first paragraph.

This is just one of those subtly exceptional post bop dates that seems to get lost in the crowd. Tis a shame...this date swings like a mother!!!

Read carefully!!! My link has been deleted...it was faulty. The pristine link is placed in the comments sextion...and make damn sure you thank the fellow who left!!

Gene Ammons - The Soulful Saxophone of Gene Ammons

Gene Ammons is not the best known tenor around. Nor the most loved. But he is good at what he does, and that is that big FAT tenor sound.

What I have for you here are couple of Ammons lps. The first is a Chess release that I don't see round much, the other a Prestige lp that you shouldn't have too much trouble running down.

Since both are short they are being included here together. They will fit on a disc nicely.

This second lp was Prestige released with credits listed only as "organ, bass, and drum accompaniment."

This record probably has more soul than the last record.

I don't know if it is the gospel undertones on this lp that make feel so fulfilled...or just that big ole saxophone!

Dexter Gordon - Blues a' la Suisse

I have a weird relationship with Dexter Gordon's records. Not necessarily a love/hate thing because I don't ever really hate them. His earliest stuff is entertaining but not necessary. A single Bethlehem compilation will suffice. The Blue Note post bop dates are excellent and essential to any decent jazz collection, but more often than not, they are not the records I quickly reach for.
What I have really come to appreciate is his later period stuff where he feels like he has settled into his older, wiser statesman status. He was rarely boring and he played with an ease that seemed to just settle my nerves.
Sure there were a few clunkers that occasionally, on paper should have been better, but I find myself more accepting of even those lately.

This one has always felt like a gem to me, and I don't see it around much, so here it 'tis.

Dexter Gordon
Blues a la Suisse

2. Blues a la Suisse
3. Some other Spring
4. Secret Love
