Charles Lloyd Quartet - Dream Weaver

Really can't imagine why this lp doesn't stay in print. Great tunes, fantastic line up. These cats were at the top of their game. I still struggle a bit with the flute but it is swinging opening track that sways me this time. I dig the long sequences on the first side, while Love Ship from the oether side has ended up on many a jazz comp for unsuspecting novices.

I first heard this record while the India Navigation blog was being assembled. Somehow I screwed up and only recorded 3 of the 4 songs Of course the link had died before I realized this. I loved the damn disc I burned but I always felt I was being cheated. And then one day...when I am in some far too crowded with junk antique store, I find an immaculate copy of this lp for the outrageous price of 15.00. The owner was as happy to grab my tenner as I was to race outta there with my new treasure!
 It appears that the folk over at OIR posted this way back in 08. With the India Navigation blog history, I think it's time this makes it's reappearance, hopefully finding a few new fans.

Hannibal - The Angels Of Atlanta

This is the lp I promised a couple of posts back. One of those I found in the local junk shop (Gotta call a spade a spade here). Never the less I was quite happy to land this, an original German enja release.

Peterson's trumpet soars while accompanied by a fine, fine bunch of musicians. The addition of the Harlem Boys Choir adds to the grandiose feeling that pervades this release. At first I was a little put off by the many vocals but as I kept listening I began to understand how perfectly they fit in. Duke used vocals several times in the same manner making the song sound big and intensely soulful at the same time as they did here with "The Inner Voice". Another nice touch was the use of both cello and standard bass.

This is a record that I knew absolutely nothing about, had only a rudimentary knowledge of Peterson himself, but when I saw the band I know I should be listening to this record. My blind choice did not disappoint, and indeed while I was trying to whittle the guy down on the cost of several other records, I knew this would be worth every penny that he undervalued it...$5.00.

It wasn't until I listened to this record a couple of times that I even realized it was a live set. I liked it but I never sat down to really listen to it. when I did it really clicked for me. I never really liked the flute much either but it may have been its use on this record that opened my ears a bit.
 The record has a very spiritual feel to it. the sort of spirit you might feel if you were spending the evening under the stars in an oasis nestled somewhere just off screen from the front cover of the lp.
 Side one, a single track, flows steadily from quiet through some raucousness and back to a steady lope before fading gently out. Side two lures you in quietly with a gentle serenade, sweet and pure. The next track reminds you that dancing to jazz is quite acceptable and even encouraged, until that saxophone needs to solo. Accomplished dancers may want to stay on their feet, while the rest of us will be content to listen and groovily sway our noggins.
One of my favorite things in life is to rediscover an lp with fresh ears and be astounded. More so, when the lp continues to sound fresh for many moons. So much for dismissing enja as a label so long ago.
