FREYUNG PASSAGE - VIENA, ÁUSTRIA

Esta elegante passagem liga duas ruas do centro de Viena: a Freyung e a Herrengasse, dizem que entrou em decadência e que os lojistas fugiram de aqui mas depois de ter sido reabilitado é agora um lugar com um toque mágico. Entrámos pelo o lado do Palácio de Ferstel o mesmo nome do arquiteto que o criou no século XIX e que foi o autor da Votivkirche, uma igreja criada depois do atentado ao Imperador Francisco José I.

This elegant passage connects two Vienna downtown streets: the Freyung and Herrengasse, they say it fell into decay and shopkeepers fled from here but after being rehabilitated is now a place with a magical touch. We entered by the side of the Ferstel Palace the name of the architect who created it in the nineteenth century and was the author of the Votivkirche, a church established after the attempt to Emperor Franz Joseph I.

CAFE RESIDENZ - VIENA, ÁUSTRIA

Partilha ementa com o Café Museum e o Hofburg por isso não aporta grandes novidades no capítulo culinário o que realmente dá mais valor ao Residenz é o facto de estar em pleno Palácio de Schönbrunn com um interior que achei um pouco antiquado (achei os outros dois mais interessantes) mas com detalhes que lhe dão algum charme como por exemplo o pianista ao fundo da sala ou o móvel de balcão com a vitrina de doces como se vivessemos no principio do século XX.

It shares the menu with the Cafe Museum and the Hofburg so it did not brings major innovations in the culinary chapter but what really adds more value to the Residenz is the fact that it is in the Schönbrunn Palace with an interior that I thought was a bit dated (I found the other two more interesting) but with details that give it some charm such as a pianist at the back of the room or the bar furniture with the candy shop window as if we lived in the beginning of the twentieth century.

MERCADO NATAL SCHÖNBRUNN - VIENA, ÁUSTRIA

Viena tem vários mercados de Natal, dois deles já colocámos aqui no blog e um dos mais famosos é o do Rathausplatz mas visitar um que está aos pé de um Palácio é sem dúvida muito interessante e surpreendente. Ao centro da praça uma grande árvore de Natal que durante a noite se ilumina e as várias bancas vendem produtos artesanais alguns podemos ver noutros mercados mas ainda assim é sempre interessante ver as velas feitas á mão, os enfeites em porcelana e pintados á mão ou os esculpidos em madeira, entre outros produtos. 

Vienna has several Christmas markets, two of them I already published on the blog and one of the most famous is the Rathausplatz but to visit one that at the feet of a Palace is certainly very interesting and surprising. At the center of the square a large Christmas tree that during the night light's up and various stalls sell handicrafts some we can see in other markets yet it is always interesting to see the handmade candles, the ornaments in porcelainand hand painted or carved in wood, among other products.

KARLSPLATZ - VIENA, ÁUSTRIA

Chegámos á Karlsplatz depois de visitar o Palácio de Verão da familia real, já estava um pouco cansada mas a animação do mercado de Natal com a Karlskirche como pano de fundo fez ganhar um novo fôlego. É uma das maiores da cidade e á sua volta para além da igreja podemos encontrar uma universidade, o Musikverein (uma sala de concertos) e pelo Künstlerhaus, assim como dos pavilhões desenhados por Otto Wagner.

We reached the Karlsplatz after visiting the Summer Palace of the Royal family, I was already a little tired but the animation of the Christmas market with the Karlskirche as a backdrop made me regain my strenght. It is one of the city's largest squares and around it, in addition to the church we can find a university, the Musikverein (concert hall) and the Künstlerhaus, we can also see the pavilions designed by Otto Wagner.

GRABEN - VIENA, ÁUSTRIA

Visitar Viena no Natal tem o inconveniente do frio mas a grande vantagem da iluminação e animação que vemos pelas suas ruas, uma das que mais me chamou a atenção foi a Graben mesmo sem antes saber que é muito conhecida e é onde algumas das lojas mais caras abrem as suas portas. Dizem que tem a sua origem no século XIII e já com caracteristicas comerciais porque há registos da venda de frutas e verduras num mercado que aqui decorria.

BURGGARTEN - VIENA, ÁUSTRIA

De passagem para o centro da cidade encontrámos o Burggarten, o jardim que está junto ao Palácio de Hofburg construído no século XIX pelos Habsburgo era nessa altura conhecido como o Jardim do Imperador (Kaisergarten), o seu uso era privado e exclusivo para a familia real até que em 1919 foi aberto ao público.


Passing through to the city center we found the Burggarten, the garden that is by the Hofburg Palace built in the nineteenth century by the Habsburg family was then known as the Emperor's Garden (Kaisergarten), its use was private and exclusive to the royal family until in 1919 it was open to the public.

ZUR ALTE KAISERMÜHLE - VIENA, ÁUSTRIA

Ainda em período de adaptação entre o Le Meridién que foi o nosso hotel original no centro da cidade para o NH Danube City junto á ONU, procurámos um sitio para jantar numa zona praticamente deserta durante a noite. Decidimos perguntar na recepção e confirmaram-nos que o Zur Alte Kaisermühle. Era uma boa opção e estava a pouco mais de cinco minutos a pé. Depois de andar por umas ruas de casas onde não se via viva alma chegámos a este animado restaurante que seria ainda mais extraordinário se tivéssemos ido durante o dia porque tem vista para um lago.

Still in adjustment period between the Le Meridien which was our original hotel in the city center and the NH Danube City near the UN, we were looking for a place to have dinner in a nearly deserted area at night. We decided to ask the front desk and they confirmed to us that the Alte Zur Kaisermühle. It was a good choice and was just over five minutes walk. After walking for some streets with just houses where you could not see a soul we arrived at this lively restaurant that would be even more extraordinary if we had gone during the day because it overlooks a lake.

PALÁCIO DE SCHÖNBRUNN - VIENA, ÁUSTRIA

Quando pensas numa casa de Verão não consegues imaginar que seria o Schönbrunn mas pensando nessa funcionalidade que a Imperatriz Maria Teresa o mandou construir, ela que teve dezasseis filhos e mais que nenhum outro monarca precisava de algo tão grandioso. Tudo começou com um pequeno pavilhão de caça e sobre ele outro palácio que Leopoldo I tinha projetado para o seu filho mas foi o pai de Maria Teresa que lhe ofereceu e ela aproveitou para o transformar no que agora chamam"Versalhes de Viena". E é inevitável deixar de fazer comparações.

When you think of a summer house you can not imagine that would be the Schönbrunn but thinking of that functionality made Empress Maria Theresa built it, she had sixteen children and more than any other monarch needed something this grand. It all started with a small hunting lodge and on to another palace which Leopold I had designed for his son but the father of Maria Theresa decided to give it to her and she took advantage to turn it in what is now called "Versailles of Vienna". And it is inevitable not to make comparisons.

PRAÇA MARIA TERESA - VIENA, ÁUSTRIA

Ao passear pela cidade fui descobrindo também a história do grande Império Austro-Húngaro e sobre a extraordinária Casa dos Habsburgo, a mesma que governou Espanha com o Imperador Carlos V. Mas esta praça está dedicada a uma mulher, a única Habsburgo a ser coroada Rainha e a governar várias regiões que se estendiam até Itália, Maria Teresa e os seus muitos nomes próprios como Amália e Cristina. Ao centro está um monumento dedicado a uma soberana que conta a história foi muito feliz ao lado do seu marido, teve vários filhos (era a mãe de Maria Antonieta) e governou durante quarenta anos um dos impérios mais invejados do mundo.

As you stroll through the city I was also discovering the history of the great Austro-Hungarian Empire and the extraordinary House of Habsburg, the same that ruled Spain with the Emperor Charles V. But this square is dedicated to a woman, the only Habsurg to be crowned Queen and to govern various regions extending to Italy, Maria Teresa and her many names like Amalia and Cristina. At the center there is a monument dedicated to a sovereign that the story tells that was very happy with her husband, she had several children (she was the mother of Marie Antoinette) and ruled for forty years one of the most envied empires of the world.

LE MERIDIEN - VIENA, ÁUSTRIA

O hotel Le Meridien não seria a minha primeira escolha em Viena por apenas uma questão: o preço. A sua localização, o bom gosto e conforto dos quartos, o serviço valem mesmo a pena mas o melhor preço que vi rondava os 150€ por noite. Fui a trabalho e aproveitámos muito este hotel com o pequeno-almoço, refeições etc.. mas o melhor mesmo era sair á rua e estar mesmo ao lado do centro, a poucos minutos da Ópera e da Praça de Maria Teresa.

The hotel Le Meridien would not be my first choice in Vienna for just one reason: the price. Its location, the good taste and comfort of the rooms, the service are really worth it but the best price we've seen was around € 150 per night. I went to work and took advantage of this hotel with breakfast, meals etc .. but the best thing was to get out to the street and be right next to the center, just minutes away from the Opera House and the Maria Theresa Square.

MERCADO NATAL PRAÇA MARIA TERESA - VIENA, ÁUSTRIA

Foi o primeiro mercado de Natal que visitei em Viena, pareceu-me mais pequeno que o da Rathausplatz mas tinha o mesmo tipo de casetas de madeira que vendem decorações de todo o tipo, grande parte artesanato além dos tradicionais bares com o Glühwein, sandes com enchidos da região, kartoffel (batatas), entre outras propostas gastronómicas. Mas então qual é a diferença? Porque é que quem vê um vê que é igual ao outro?

It was the first Christmas market that I visited in Vienna, it seemed smaller than the Rathausplatz but had the same type of wooden houses selling decorations of all kinds, much of crafts in addition to the traditional bars with Glühwein, sandwiches with stuffed region, Kartoffel (potatoes), among other gastronomic proposals. But then what is the difference? Why one sees a market sees another?

CAFÉ HOFBURG - VIENA, ÁUSTRIA

Depois de visitar as várias salas de Imperadores e Imperatrizes do Hofburg era tempo para uma pausa e entre salas deixam-te entrar no seu café mas preferimos chegar até ao final da exposição, voltar á praça e entrar pela porta principal do Café Hofburg. Pareceu-nos ser dos mesmos do Café Residenz e do Museum pela carta que tinham, o seu interior era diferente mas seguia a mesma linha de conforto do último que mencionei. Conseguimos um sofá acolhedor junto a uma janela e o primeiro que pedimos foi um chá.

After visiting the various rooms of emperors and empresses of the Hofburg it was time for a break and between those rooms they let you come to their coffee but we chose to reach the end of the museum, exit to the square and enter by the front door of the Café Hofburg. It seemed to us to be the same Cafe Residenz and Museum because of its menu, its interior was different but followed the same line of comfort of the last one mentioned. We got a cozy sofa near a window and the first thing we ordered was a tea.

HOFBURG - VIENA, ÁUSTRIA

O Hofburg é muito mais que um Palácio, é um complexo arquitetónico que serviu de casa a várias familias reais e uma das mais poderosas foi a dos Habsburg, que governou a Áustria durante cerca de seiscentos anos. Aqui viveu também um das imperatrizes mais conhecidas da história, Sissi ou Isabel da Bavaria, todos se lembram do filme que parecia tocar o lado mais doce da sua vida mas nada se compara a visitar o seu apartamento para entender mais sobre esta complexa mulher. Valeu a pena entrar no seu museu para conhecer o interior de uma pequena parte do Palácio Imperial.

The Hofburg is much more than a Palace is an architectural complex that served as the home to several royal families and one of the most powerful was the Habsburg, who ruled Austria for about six hundred years. Here lived also one of the best known empresses in history, Sissi or Elizabeth of Bavaria, all remember the movie that seemed to touch the sweeter side of her life but nothing compares to visit her apartments to understand more about this complex woman. Worth enter his museum to see the inside of a small part of the Imperial Palace.

CAFÉ MUSEUM - VIENA, ÁUSTRIA

Qualquer guia te dirá que os cafés de Viena são verdadeiras instituições, são outro tipo de monumentos aos quais te recomendam ir mas só quando realmente entras num sentes o que estão a falar. E um dos seus mais emblemáticos é o Café Museum que logo á entrada exibe a sua montra de doces para deixar-te deslumbrado e para não peças um café sem companhia. Fundado no final do século XIX nas suas mesas sentaram-se artistas como Klimt ou Kokoschka ou os arquitetos Otto Wagner e Adolf Loos.

Any guide will tell you that the cafes of Vienna are true institutions, they are other types of monuments which they recommend you to go but only when you enter one you really feel what they are talking about. And one of its most emblematic is the Coffee Museum that as son as you get in displays its sweets window to leave you dazzled and not drink a coffee without company. Founded in the late nineteenth century at their tables sat artists like Klimt and Kokoschka or architects Otto Wagner and Adolf Loos.

MERCADO NATAL RATHAUSPLATZ - VIENA, ÁUSTRIA

Viena tem mais mercados de Natal que alguma vez imaginava, cada praça e recanto tinha umas casitas que vendiam entre o vinho quente (glühwein), especialidades locais e artesanato de todo o tipo seja para decoração de Natal ou para oferecer. Mas o rei de estes mercados é o Christmas Advent na praça do Rathaus (Praça do Municipio) e a melhor hora para o visitar é quando já cai a noite, nessa altura podemos ver as suas decorações iluminadas.

Vienna has more Christmas markets than ever imagined, each square and cranny had a casitas that sold between the mulled wine (glühwein), local specialties and crafts of all kinds is for Christmas decoration or to offer. But the king of these markets is the Christmas Advent in the square of the Rathaus (Municipio Square) and the best time to visit is when ever the night falls, then we can see its lighted decorations.
