Cats On Tuesday

Diamond Stars by Zoolatry
I had made the comment on Zoolatry's blog that while I know what filters she's using, she does much better work than me, and that well, Black Cats are harder to work with than Himmies because of the lack of contrast. She took it as a challenge and send me several nice treatments. I like this one the best I think (although wait until I unveil the Black Cat Pub one she do!)

Feline GPS: Whiskers help us figure out where we are in relationship to what is around us. Feline Vibrissae are not quite a GPS system for Cats, but according to Sandra Diaz-Vergara, veterinary dermatologist at Virginia Tech, cats use tactile orientation and must touch objects with their whiskers to transfer information. Vision-impaired cats from birth have longer whiskers to help them orient better.

"A cat that is born blind or has adapted to blindness will be a master at using its whiskers," says Tracy McFarland, veterinarian and owner of The Cat Doctor in Santa Clarita, Calif. "When I have a blind cat in my exam room, unless they are newly blind they are using whiskers to navigate."

More on Whiskers as Whisker Week continues tomorrow, here on House Panthers!

Help Higgins! Higgins, a beautiful 3 year old long haired House Panther is looking for a furever home in the Los Angeles, California, area. I must say, he is a very handsome Mancat and I'm told he's very lovable as well.

Higgins has been features on Kat's Cat of the Day as well as Grr, Midnight & Cocoa's Blog.

If you can let Higgins into your heart and your homes, please contact Midnight's Mom for more information.

Smeagol lives with Strider, a tan and white bicolor, Gizmo, a tiger tabby, and Mystery, a giant green Iguana. He can be found at Tails of Two Kitties. Here he is painted up, along with his "precious" sparkle toy. Although I must say, those Temptations are pretty precious as well.

Domestic Cats' Origin Many people know what dogs were domesticated from wolves, but what about cats? How did we come to live with humans? A study published in the July 2007 issue of the journal "Science" helps answer that question. Using genetic methods, scientists from the National Cancer Institute and the University of Oxford report that the origins of the common household cat can be traced back 100,000 years to ancestors in the Middle East. This much earlier than the earliest archaeological evidence of feline domestication that dates back 9,500 years to Cyprus.

By looking at the DNA of wildcats and domestic cats, the research team found five matriarchal lines from which all modern domestic cats have descended. Their ancestors, the Near Eastern wildcat, still lives in Israel, Saudi Arabia and other Middle Eastern countries. It is believed that the domestic cat's ancestors become helpful to early farmers by hunting rodents and that domestication evolved out of the relationship between humans and cats. In turn, cats followed their human companions as they migrated across the globe.

Pepper Needs Help! Pepper, a Russian Blue, has Cholangitis (inflammation of the bile ducts) and can't keep food down. She also has Hepatic Lipidosis from not eating and must be force fed with a feeding tube in her neck. He medical care and recovery is both expensive and lengthy.

You can read more about Pepper on Pepper's Page.

If you can help in any way, they really need to raise some funds to help Pepper. Thanks to Jan's Funny Farm for bringing this very serious matter to our attention.

Our fellow House Panther Alexi is a Russian Blue, so it would be great to help out this House Panther in need!

Persephone is the most persecuted of the House Panthers over at One Eyed Jack's, she just hasn't learned to blame things on those invisible bands of marauding woofies that come around. Or perhaps it's just the glowing edges that give her away?

Did you know? Excess plague and tartar can lead to gingivitis (an inflammation of the gums), which can allow bacteria from the mouth to enter the bloodstream. From there, bacteria can travel throughout the body and cause problems with your heart, liver or kidneys.

Keeping plaque and tartar under control is the key to a healthy mouth and a healthy House Panther.

We hope that you have found our little column on Feline Dental Care this last week helpful. Remember to keep you teeth clean and show us those pearly whites when you're on the prowl!

February is National Pet Dental Health Month. You can find out more at Greenies.com. Cat Fancy Magazine also running lots of info on Cat tooth care in their February issue.

Midnight Monday on Wednesday

Mini Panther

Tyler's brofer Jake wrote in Tyler's blog yesterday "The poor guy doesn't even get his own day of the week because none of the days start with "b" for black or even "p" for panther."

So I explained -- "Monday starts with M for Midnight - the official day of House Panthers, but everyone has gotten off Midnight Monday now and is doing Mancat Monday. Quite a shame, actually. The male House Panthers should be doing Midnight Mancat Monday to take both into considerations...that seems a bit complicated for them. And Tyler doesn't even take advantage of Mancat Monday, so who knows."

I have noticed that a lot of Mancats are getting away from Midnight Monday and I'm just as guilty some weeks as I don't always do a Midnight Monday, but it would be great if we could get the word out and make out club a little more active, don't you think? One of us with Mr. Linky (yes, I include myself in this) really needs to do a post in here each Monday with a Mr. Linky on it, so that our members can add links to their Midnight Monday posts.

I have been remiss, but so have all of us.

I'd also like to see this blog be more active, maybe we need to find something to do to make it more fun? Any suggestions? Tuxy Gang is always doing something, Simply Siamese is doing the Spring Contest for H.A.M. and well the M-Cat club as really taken off.

Help me out here, my fellow House Panthers. We need some ideas!
