Formally Feral/Foster Friday

Geez....trying to find a feral/foster this week was a bit of a problem. Everyone I have on tap did not qualify (as far as I know).

Huggy Bear was part of a litter of four that was rescued from a feral existence in November of 2004. He went through several named - Bullet, Baby Bear - before they settled on Huggy Bear. He was put out for adoption like the rest of the siblings, but when he was not picked it become too much for Jasper's family and they brought him home from Pets, Inc.

Three and a half years later, he's turned into quite the fellow.

You can find out more about Huggy at Jasper McKitten Cat's blog.

CATS EYES

We cats have excellent vision, of course, and can see an ant at a distance of six meters(!). While looking straight ahead we can also see sideways in an angle of 45 degrees, but only 2-dimensional.

In pitch-darkness our eyes become more like a kind of ears: the pupils actually pick up acoustic vibrations.

Our nose has 17 million nerve cells, which we uses to trace all smells/aromas in our environment. Even the food we eat is chosen by the smell.

A cat who has a cold, doesn't eat because he isn't hungry, but because he can't smell the food.

In Comparison: a dog's nose has 147 million nerve cells; humans have 'only' 5 million nerve cells in their noses.

Note: I still have to clean up the contributers' section, but I know of a number of Panthers out there that aren't contributing members. So in talking to Not the Mama, we've come up with a new section called "Honorary Members". These are Panthers that we know and love on the Blogosphere, but which, for whatever reason, choose not to accept an invitation as a contributor.

Contributing members will now be called FULL members. I hope to generate a bit more interest in the group this way. This also opens up the club to Panthers on Catster that do not wish to get Blogger addresses, but which would still like to belong to the group and display our badge on their page.

If you know of any Panthers that should be added to our list of Honorary Members, please drop me an e-mail and let me know!

Thoughtful Thursday

black cat,photoshop
Huggy Bear is just a big black, floofy, huggily mancat. He lives with Jasper McKitten-Cat, Josie and Maggie in South Carolina. I have used Photoshop's smudge stick filter on him and did some color correction to try to get rid of the overwhelming yellow-green. But HuggyBear has such big golden eyes, there is not much you can do there!

Look, Don't Touch Your whiskers should never be trimmed, cut or otherwise disturbed. Unlike regular follicles, experts say, whiskers contain blood sinuses that connect to a nerve bundle, making the very tips - similar to human finger tips sensation - sensitive to air currents. The slighted touch can cause a cat to blink.

Veterinarians say that messing with a cat's whiskers is a big no-no. "As a cat doctor, I try to avoid annoying my patients more than I have to," McFarland says. When it comes to whiskers, she handles them minimally. "It's mean to cut a cat's whiskers," she adds.

Robyn Jaynes, Petsmart's veterinary and pet care expert, concurs. "From a general practitioner's point of view, (cats) need them for balance and movement and for sensing purposes."

More on Whiskers as Whisker Week continues tomorrow, here on House Panthers!

Help Higgins! Higgins, a beautiful 3 year old long haired House Panther is looking for a furrever home in the Los Angeles, California, area. I must say, he is a very handsome Mancat and I'm told he's very lovable as well.

Higgins has been features on Kat's Cat of the Day as well as Grr, Midnight & Cocoa's Blog.

If you can let Higgins into your heart and your homes, please contact Midnight's Mom for more information.

House Panther hunting

I got to let my true House Panther spirit out the other day when a large moth slipped into the house. With just a moment's notice, I pounced, caught the moth in my paws and my mouth, then ran through the house with sisters in tow with the moth fluttering in my mouth.

Here I am capturing the moth between my paws and studying my prey.

This might not be the best shot because everything was so frantic, but you can clearly make out the moth in my mouth. His wings tickled my lips. It was such a thrill. Dad eventually freed the moth, but what a rush!

Open windows

Mom and Dad have been doing some painting, which means the windows have been open. It's been warm here, so we've been able to have some open windows in the afternoons. You just can't beat the fresh air and birdies.

Labels

Huggy Bear again... I had a thought when doing my last post. Since there are a bunch of us who post here, if we use our name as the label, that would let someone follow all the posts about one of us. That way, if someone wanted to follow Smudge's stories, they could click his label and get all the Smudge posts, and the same for all of us. Just an idea, let me know what you think.

I made it to Dad's desktop

Huggy Bear here ... I'm excited because I managed to unseat Jasper from Dad's desktop wallpaper at work with my latest picture!

Dad has always fussed because he tells me how handsome a boy I am, but that the pictures really don't capture my face quite right. But in this picture Dad was very happy with how everything balanced out just right. So Dad bumped the big ball of orange fur from his work desktop and put me on instead. In this shot, I was studying the backyard for some birds that I knew were coming, or had visited, or should visit soon, and would be fun to watch.

Supervising the pumpkin carving

Hi ... Huggy Bear here! I got to spend some really good time in the garage with Mom and Dad last night. Mom and Dad were carving pumpkins and I supervised. I think my supervision really worked well because the pumpkins turned out great! Check them out at our blog and at Mom and Dad's blog! Posted by Picasa

Welcome to my jungle

Dad snapped this picture a while back and I've been meaning to post it ... This is a House Panther in his natural habitat. Since I don't have a jungle to prowl, I made the best out of what I had by prowling through this potted plant. Amazing, it keeps bouncing back despite how much I play in it. You've got to get one.

Huggy Bear

My name is Huggy Bear and I'm proud to be among the House Panthers. My older brother Jasper does the blogging on his blog, so it is nice to have the House Panthers just for me. I've been meaning to do this for a few weeks now and, well, you know, between naps on the chairs, the bed, or actually anywhere I am, I just hadn't gotten around to it. Oh, I also have two sisters, one from the same litter as me, Josie, and a little scrappy sister from the same mother but a different litter. Thanks to all the House Panthers for welcoming me in!
