Dora the Explorer - or DoryDoo - is a 3-year-old Domestic short hair. She was brought to the Ballicus Cats when she was an 8-week-old kitten and has lived with them all her life.

She's a very smart kitty, and can open just about anything. If she just had opposable thumbs, there'd be no holding her back. She's a super jumper and practices the art of Air Dancing, a very athletic undertaking for any cat.

She loves chasing Mao and cuddling with Brainball, opening things, and figuring out things.

While she can be very affectionate, she needs more space than the other cats and more time to herself. She often seems to be deep in thought, as though she's contemplating the meaning of the universe, and perhaps she is.

Online, you can find Dora at The Ballicus Blog, along with Chairman Mao, Brainball, and sometimes Marilyn MonREOW, who has her own blog.

Say "MEOW"

I know that the humans out there are obsessed with their "flashy boxes", so here are a few tips for taking some great pictures of your beloved cat:

1. Kids are great motivators - Have them tease your cat or kitten with some toys especially interactive toys like cat dancer. As they play go ahead and snap, snap, snap.

2. Close-ups make purr-fect pictures - If you want a good picture, go where your cat is. Shoot it just below your cat's eye level and zoom in as closely as you can for good detail.

3. Make sure of your Backgrounds - Think neutral and a plain wall for a dark colored cat, and dark background for a light colored one. If your Tabby loves to sleep on your busy fabric couch, than place a plain blanket down first.

4. Make the most of computers and scanners - Use software to improve and enhance the color and the lighting. Don't be afraid to experiment with the software, If you don't "save" the photo with your changes, you haven't ruined it.

Mickey is one of the nicest cats on Cat Blogosphere. This was a quick page kit that I got from Digital Scrapbook Freebies. The composition was done in PhotoSuite, with additional elements added from there. Mickey is going on 15, so the whole composition is intended to look a little faded.

Mickey lives in Nova Scotia, Canada with his sisters Tillie and Georgia. He blogs at Mickey's Musings. At 14-years-old, he likes nothing better than to sit in the sun and dream of his Miss Peach.

Mickey was previously featured on House Panthers on March 5th, 2008.

The Creation Myth

On the first day of creation, God created the cat.

On the second day, God created man to serve the cat.

On the third day, God created all the animals of the earth to serve as potential food for the cat.

On the fourth day, God created honest toil so that man could labor for the good of the cat.

On the fifth day, God created the sparkle ball so that the cat might or might not play with it.

On the sixth day, God created veterinary science to keep the cat healthy and the man broke.

On the seventh day, God tried to rest, but he had to scoop the litter box.

(Actually, I don't know how it is in your household, but the seventh day is laundry day here, in which God decreed the humans should provide the cat with warm laundry to lay in.)

Cocoa is a little more skittish than Midnight and is afraid of alot of things: strange people, strange kitties, moving water plastic bags and loud noises are all listed amongst the things that scare him. He loves Fishy Flakes and Temptations for treats and like me, will try to get them as often as he can.

He will occasionally whap Grr in an attempt to start a game of Thundering Herd of Elephants. He's not afraid of putting the big bitey on Grr though if she should play too rough.

Cocoa and Grr look quite a bit a like, but Grr is bigger. You can find Cocoa at Grr, Midnight and Cocoa.

Cocoa was previously featured on House Panthers on March 7, 2007.

Hands-On Communication

Most cats prefer to be stroked from head to tail, along the directional flow of their hair. Some cats don't like their stomachs rubbed - others do.

From the act of being petted, cats receive comfort. It also represents an excellent activity to bolster cat-human bonding. Cats love to curl up in human laps, purring away while nestling down for a good snooze.

Petting is a very powerful reward to cats - similar in comparison to being treated to a back massage for people. When you pet a cat, your blood pressure drops and the cat's might was well.

But be on the lookout for those times when snuggling is the furthest thing from her mind. Most cats back away if they don't want to be petted, ears and whiskers lie flat and eyes become dilated.

Pet-induced aggression can be a very common problem. A cat might enjoy being petted, but when she gets fed up with it, you will see squinty eyes, ears that swivel to the back of her head, with an irritable look on her face.

Another warning clue: the tip of her tail switches from side to side just before an irritated cat is about to bat, nip or scratch you.

Staying in touch with the world around them is extremely important to cats. Equally as vital is the petting and stroking received from their human caretakers. In this give and take action, everyone benefits.

Smudge was the founder of House Panthers. He was diagnosed with CRF in November of 2006. At the time it was believed that he had six months to a year to live, but he has since made it past that and seems to be doing well with the one remaining kidney he has.

Originally he lived with Magoo, Bella and Dolce and blogged at And then there were four...eh? However, after he became sick, he began to associate his human Dad with the Vet visits, and decided that house was not his home anymore. He moved in with his Grandmaw and now lives with his new sisfur Chloe where he is more comfortable.

We don't hear much from Smudge these days since his Gramdmaw is not a blogging type human, but he seems happy and was last reported (Nov. of 2007) as doing well there.

Thank YOU Smudge, for starting this wonderful group for all House Panthers!

A Pair Affair

When our furriends Riley and Rascal were adopted into the Grr family, it was because they were found together, abandoned. Indeed, Grr herself, was found with her siblings Midnight and Cocoa and the family was kept in tact. This may have been a matter of sentiment on the part of the Lady and the Formerly Blond Girl, but it now seems that it was the correct thing to do.

Adopting a new kitten can be a fun and exciting time for most families. However allowing a cat into ones life is a larger commitment than many humans believe. Many shelters are implementing an adoption-in-pair policy as a new requirement. I have seen this on Itty Bitty Kitty Committee blog as well, as they wish the kittens to go to their new homes in pairs.

Cats are social creatures and the majority enjoy companionship and live longer, happier lives with a buddy. One of the most common reasons kittens are returned to an adoption group is because they are left alone all day. They can become biters out of frustration and can develop anti-social behavior towards people and other animals.

Kittens will become most active once they are 7-8 weeks old. They are high energy and require at least 4 hours of interaction per day with another kitten or cat to become a well socialized animal. Playing together is a complex learning activity that can assist with building the coordination and flexability. It can also help them develop social relationships and helps them hone their physical and mental skills. Play provides an outlet for pent up energy and can prevent potential behavior problems, eliminating boredom. When two kittens, ideally littermates, are adopted together, they keep each other company while their human companions are not at home. They will interacting with each other and mimicking the other's actions. If one kitten is quick to learn appropriate behavior, the other will be likely to follow.

Engaging in play is not only fun, but an instinct that contributes to their natural maturity and growth. Two kittens learning together helps create a better transition for them to grow into a well behaved adult cat. Those who are raised together have the chance to be lifelong friends and of course two lives would be saved, instead of just one.

Harper Abilgail Stephens
Click on the image to bigify it. Image Info

While Abbie (Harper Abigail Stephens) is technically the House Panther in the Cats Stephens gang, but Emily and Eliot are good candidates for Blue Wednesday.

Abbie became a Stephens in March of 2007 and celebrated her first Gotcha Day at the beginning of the month. She was adopted for PetSmart, mainly as a companion for Eliot. Evidently Emily is not really friendly and Percy is a little on in years. She likes to bite feet, especially if she's being ignored, and she likes to start fights with Eliot, then act like he's hurting her. Unfortunately, just about everyone has caught onto this ploy.

She is a long haired Panther with a very long body and tail that are both low to the ground giving her a kind of ferret look.

There have been a lot of changes recently in the Cats Stephens household and they do not blog as actively as they did, but you can find Abbie and Company at The Cats Stephens.

Please stop by and leave a note for Percy as well, who has non-metastasized nerve sheath sarcoma and will likely have to have surgery to remove a couple of toes. The are picking up a referral to take him to see a specialist at a hospital in Virginia .

Time After Time: Essentials for the proper care of an aging cat

(Part 2 of 3)

Routine Scene

Schedules make humans crazy at times, but they actually can help aging cats stay on track. We are more creatures of habit than our caretakers are.

"Keeping a similar schedule each day can help decrease some confusion cats can experience, therefore reducing their stress levels," says Wailani Sung, a veterinarian at First Regional Animal Hospital in Chandler, Arizonia.

"It will not prevent their development of cognitive dysfunction; however, providing environmental enrichment, such as interactive toys, games, rotating toys or making small, gradual changes to (the feline) environment can enhance the quality of their lives, and might make them more adaptable to other changes in their environment," Sung says.

You might want to get your caretaker to leave the radio playing softly for your pleasure while they are out dayhunting. Remind them that we like quiet easy listening stations, and not loud and noisy musics.

Vet Visits

Much as many of us dread car trips and being taken into a noisy veterinary office, frequent check-ups are necessary for aging cats, They ensure that no sicknesses appeared seemingly overnight.

Going to the veterinarian for a check-up every six months can work in your favor. It also helps veterinarians detect and pinpoint diseases early on, while preventing future health-related problems that might set in.

Second Childhood

It might seem strange that, after years of behaving, you suddenly begin to revert back to your unruly kitten ways. This happens sometimes to humans as well. With aging felines, however, this change in behavior can't always be helped.

"One of the diseases that affects older cats - that causes only behavioral changes - is severe senility, or Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome (CDS)," says Matthew D. Wheaton, a veterinarian and owner of Alicia Pet Clinic in Laguna Hills, California. "CDS is a recently recognized disease that affects some older cats, and is similar to Alzheimer's disease in many ways. Cats might show disorientation, confusion or just disconnect themselves from interaction with family members. Sometimes these patients will forget how to use the litterbox appropriately."

Because many other common conditions can mimic this disease, a CDS diagnosis only occurs after veterinarians rule out all other possibilities. This can frustrate everyone by the time the diagnosis is made.

"Treatment can be very helpful with specific medications, and supportive therapies, such as antioxidant supplementation and vitamins," Wheaton says.

(Sadly there seems to be no help for the CRS syndrome that my human suffers from.)

7 Simple Ways to Help Cats in Need

Paolo scavenged for food, water and shelter to survive. The abandoned silver tabby domestic shorthair suffered a painful compound fracture in his leg, which he dragged behind him, lifeless and limp. Luckily, he was spotted by animal lover Nanette Plivoris who got him free veterinary care that saved his life, and helped by a rescue group that found him a permanent home.

Homeless, stray and feral cats live among us in the shadows and rely on the kindness of strangers for survival. "Even if you rescue just one cat, you're helping with the pet overpopulation problem, and you're part of a nationwide movement toward building a kinder world for animals," says Gregory Castle, one of the founders of Best Friends Animal Society, an international organization dedicated to humanely reducing pet homelessness and the largest animal sanctuary in the United States. "There's a huge sense of satisfaction in helping a cat in need. It's a wonderful thing to do, and it feels wonderful to do it."

Next time you stumble upon a stray, abandoned or feral cat, follow these simple steps:

1. Find the owner.

If the cat is friendly, look for a tag or have your veterinarian scan for a microchip. Put up fliers in your neighborhood, and post a picture of the cat in your local animal shelter's lost and found book. If the cat is not approachable, it's probably feral and still needs your help.

2. Take a trip to the vet.

Get a checkup to ensure that the cat is healthy and spayed or neutered. If you need financial assistance, ask your veterinarian if he or she can provide free or discounted services for the rescued cat, as many are willing to help their clients in these situations.

3. Find help if you need it.

If you can't look after the cat yourself, try to find a friend to help. "The next best thing is to find a no-kill organization to take the cat into its program, but keep in mind that they probably won't be able to offer instantaneous help, so be patient," Castle advises. You can find local rescue groups at www.alleycat.org and www.pets911.com.

Come back tomorrow for four more ways you can help!

Whisker Smarts: There are roughly 12 mystacials (upper lip whiskers) on each side of your muzzle, mostly for navigation.

Superciliary (above the eyes) and genal (cheek) whiskers trigger protective eye blinks and warn of danger.

Carpal (wrist) whiskers help capture prey and aid in climbing.

Whisker Follicles embed three times deeper beneath the skin than normal hairs.
