Now you can own an affordable GIBSON, so replace your GIBSUN now :)

A few days ago while visiting a department for work-related problem, a friend in that department hushing me to his workstation.

"Look at this..." he said. Pointing to a Japanese website selling music instruments.

"I just bought this a few minutes ago." He continued. The guitar below... Ain't that a beauty?

That is a GIBSON SGJ. Guitar cost with shipping from Japan and expecting 10% tax is about RM2,200 ONLY.

A GIBSUN (a fake GIBSON with GIBSON decal... I named it as GIBSUN) sells between RM1,000 to RM1,800 in Malaysia. And you will get all sorts of problem since they are cheapos selling just about RM300 in China.

Add a few hundreds and you'll have an authentic GIBSON. Of course la, it is an entry level GIBSON. It is still better than a fake Slash GIBSUN LP.

Look at this which is about the same total price... a GIBSON LPJ.

Replace your GIBSUN to an original USA-made GIBSON, now.

Praktis membawa penat.

Entwistle Custom Pickups: Dark Star

Ni aku punya review yg amatur pasal pickup Dark Star keluaran Entwistle.
"Amatur" yang aku maksudkan ni merangkumi aspek:
- pengalaman menggunakan pickups;
- kepekaan pada tone;
- buat review.

So jgn pandang serius sgt review aku ni, anggap je la sebagai perkongsian pengalaman. So here we go!

Les Paul ni model Standard Plus Top, made in Korea pada tahun 2003. Body mahogany with flame maple top. Pickup asal mmg original Epiphone.

Entwistle: Dark Star installed on an Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plus Top

First off, kenapa nak ganti original pickup Epiphone Les Paul tu?
Bridge pickup tu ade masalah feedback / squeal bila pakai hi-gain distortion. Actually takde tinggi sgt, aku set gain around 50% je, tu pun dah squeal!

Kenapa jadi mcm tu? Stock pickup Epiphone ni tak bagus ke?
Bukan tak bagus... mmg saja diaorg buat pickup mcm tu. Konon2 nak dpt kan "PAF" tone mcm Gibson Les Paul tahun 50'an dulu... So pickup tu mmg sengaja tak di wax-potted kan... At least itu yg aku paham (kalau salah tolong betulkan)...

Then, kenapa pilih Entwistle Dark Star ni?
Sebab dia MURAH! hahaha...
Pastu aku tgk spec dia tulis HIGH OUTPUT dgn 16k DC resistance. Terus dlm kepala otak aku teringat pada Seymour Duncan Hot Rails. So aku assume Dark Star ni kira setanding la dgn Hot Rails.

Seymour Duncan Hot Rails -- single coil sized humbucker!

So mcm mana keputusan selepas install Dark Star?
Jangkaan aku meleset sama sekali... Tapi takde la teruk sgt sound + output dia. Actually quite decent. Masih lagi boleh buat pinch harmonics, walaupun tak semudah mcm Hot Rails... Bila strum kuat2 pd clean setting, sound mmg clear, tak distorted mcm Hot Rails.

Spec Mockingbird Special: body mahogany, neck thru, tapi takde maple top.

Rockfield pickups: Stock pickups on many BC Rich models

So, kecewa ke dgn pickup Dark Star nih?
Don't get me wrong, aku takde pon kecewa dgn Dark Star ni... In fact, aku mmg suka sound Mockingbird aku tu (Rockfield pickups)... So, aku pon takde masalah dgn sound yg dihasilkan oleh Dark Star + Les Paul ni. Even better dari pickup Ibanez V8 yg aku pernah pakai dulu. Cuma jgn la expect dia setanding dgn Hot Rails, or any other expensive pickups...

Ooo... Takde la hebat sgt... Abis tu, pickup ni sesuai utk apa je?
Ok, aku nak tanya balik: "Gitar ko tu hebat sangat ke??" hahaha... Kalau mampu beli gitar high-end, upgrade la pickup yg hi-end jugak... Abaikan review ni... pi terus beli Duncan ke, EMG ke, Dimarzio ke...

Anyway, pikap ni sesuai utk mereka yg nak siapkan projek gitar... Atau kalau korang ade gitar yg crap dgn pickup yg definitely crap, ganti la pickup tu dgn brand Entwistle yg murah nih...

Pickup comparison (from top-bottom): Rockfield, Dark Star, and Hot Rails

Any last words?
Ada beberapa lagi pickup "second grade" yg available kat market skarang ni... Antaranya GFS, Rockfield, Tesla, Artec, dan latest addition - Entwistle. Semua ni alternatif kpd pikap2 boutique dan mahal mcm Dimarzio, EMG, Duncan, etc. Les Paul aku nih patutnya install Duncan Distortion (berangan!), tapi bajet plak takde! So kalau nak upgrade / ganti pickup, tapi bajet ciput - go for Entwistle.

Kesimpulan:
Berbaloi dgn harga, you get what you paid for (maybe even more!) Seperti biasa, aku akan kata "sound tu subjektif"... Maybe ade yg suka, ade yg tak... try sendiri baru tau.

Sekian, terima kasih.

To many players out there, a floating bridge is equivalent to the Floyd Rose locking unit as it allows one to raise & lower the played notes. The fallacy here is that a floating bridge need not be a Floyd Rose model & the Floyd Rose bridge itself comes in a version which doesn't 'float' (ala Van Halen's).

A floating bridge is common reference for a bridge unit which allows the whammy action to lower & raise notes as previously mentioned. The pic above shows my Fender Highway 1 bridge which is neither a Floyd Rose unit nor a locking variant; it's Fender's traditional Strat bridge. I've set it up to such an extent it rests in an overhanging position, not levelled against the body surface. This way, I can lower the notes & raise them as the need arises. This is how a non-Floyd Rose bridge floats, just as preferred by Stevie Ray Vaughan in his belated 'Number 1' Strat.

So the term 'floating' refers to how the bridge rests to allow a dual-whammy application, regardless of it's a Floyd Rose unit or otherwise.

Floyd Rose

Many of us are aware the 'Floyd Rose' name refers to a (locking) guitar bridge capable of lowering & raising (vibrato) the generated pitch. Floyd Rose is itself a brand name, it is not referring to the component's technical capacity. However, we conveniently refer to 'Floyd Rose' as a bridge type instead because many of us find it a chore to explain what this hardware is capable of. The product reputation is such that the brand name itself comprehensively explains what it does.

Ibanez Edge

There are many guitars out there equipped with a dual action bridge ala Floyd Rose but they are by no means a product of the brand name. Ibanez's bridges in many of their guitars feature a Floyd Rose derivative which equal the former in function & features, if not furthering the details of the original. The Edge model (pre-2003, currently discont'd except for selected models), depicted above, is a very close spin-off which allegedly exceeded the Floyd Rose version in selected attainments.

I am not trying to polarize players into believing in brand name superiority, but let's be careful when we tell others we are off-loading a guitar with a Floyd Rose bridge when what's in store is a copy/ derivative unit instead. This may be trivial to many of us until the situation takes a legal turn...

Harap-harap dapat difahami. Kalau tak faham, ayuh kita diskas lagi.

Gear Acquisition Syndrome: GIBSON Firebird

Ataupun dipendekkan sebagai GAS.

Soalan yang selalu ditanya ialah WHAT ARE YOU GASSING FOR?

Well, below...

What a beaut!!! Nasib baik warna putih ada mass-produced. Kalau tak, pengsan la nak cari yang vintage.

There is no mistaking a Firebird V—with its unique "reversed" zig-zag body design and equally distinct headstock, it is simply one of the most recognizable of all guitar profiles. First introduced in 1963, the Gibson Firebird was the brainchild of legendary automotive designer and visionary Ray Dietrich (Lincoln, Packard), enlisted by Gibson to bolster the guitar lines of the early '60s and help solidify the company's eminent rank among solidbody electric guitar manufacturers. Dietrich's unconventional design was based loosely on both the legendary automobile tailfins of the 1950s and the Gibson Explorer, which had been introduced several years earlier.

Siapa sama dengan aku kata "Ini gitar bentuk sangat YUMMY!"?

Gitar CAPARISON Dellinger II SE

eh... ada kawan review gitar dia baru beli. Read on!

Nak gambar lagi besar, kasi klik kat gambar!

Brand: Caparison
Model: Dellinger II SE

Body: Mahogany
Neck: Maple
Fretboard: Ebony
Neck grip: Caparison
Bridge: Schaller FRT II (floating)
Pickups: Caparison PH.
Others: Push-push switch on Tone knob (no... it is not typo... it is really push-push switch)

Playbility:
walaupun aku suka neck yg nipis2 mcm wizard neck Ibanez... tapi aku masih lagi selesa dengan neck ni. neck dia tebal... tapi ada flat skit kat blakang tu. tapi flat tu bukan sepanjang2 neck... kat depan (fret 1) mmg lebih flat dari tpt lain... tapi bila kat higher fret... dia akan bulat mcm biasa. tapi kalo diberi pilihan... aku masih lagi suka wizard neck heheee.

fretboard.... ebony... licin... hampir takde urat langsung. memang sedap la running kat fretboard. tak sticky mcm maple & tak kasar mcm rosewood.

gitar ni agak ringan berbanding gtr2 aku yg lain. so... live show mmg best lah. nak hayun2 mcm metal core pun senang.

Soundwise:
aku suka sound yg berat... tapi dlm masa yang sama nak ada bright. so... inilah gitar yg sesuai dgn citarasa tu. bagi aku... mahogany body dia dpt deliver sound yg berat. ebony fretboard dia plak deliver sound yang bright & percussive. berbeza dgn maple fretboard... sound dia bright. ebony punya bright tapi berisi. mid tone gitar ni pun cun... secukup rasa. sebelum ni aku ada jgak try gitar ebony fretboard... mahogany body... tapi caparison ni special lah. maybe gred kayu dia best skit kot. especially ebony... kadang2 cakap ebony tapi rupa mcm rosewood... tone pun rosewood jgak... maybe ebony low grade.

pickup dia plak... hi gain. walaupun clarity dia kurang skit... tapi acceptable. aku tak penah jumpa lagi pickup passive hi gain... dlm masa sama clarity dia best. active pickup lain lah... mcm EMG tu. kalo nak dibandingkan dgn EMG... pickup Caparison PH ni clarity dia tak mcm EMG tapi dia punya creamy / body lagi best dari EMG. push-push switch tu bleh select utk paralel / series. bila switch to paralel... sound dia tak bright sgt mcm pickup2 lain yg aku penah buat paralel. clean sound... mmg best gila la bila pakai paralel... bright + lemak berkrim. bila paralel pun... gain dia takde la drop sgt sampai mcm single coil punya gain.

aduh... malas plak aku nak taip... kalo rajin aku taip lagi lah & review maple neck punya gitar plak... Killer.

Harga:
pasal harga.... ramai plak yg tanya pasal ni. honestly... market price... rm8k tak termasuk shipping. tapi kalo kat jepun... bleh dpt rm6k. malangnya... gitar ni tak dijual direct dari jepun. hanya dijual melalui dealer yg telah dilesenkan sahaja. paling dekat... ostolia... bmusic.com. dia nak kasi gitar ni elit skit... pasal org jepun lebih mengagungkan gitar luar... mcm US, UK...
