Kirjanurkkaus

Jostain syystä minulla on ollut suuria vaikeuksia keksiä tähän mitään kirjaa, vaikka monet teistä muista bloggareista ovat sanoneet, että yliarvostetuimman kirjan valinta oli helppo! No, mainitsen yhden klassikon, joka oli minulle suuri pettymys: Evelyn Waughin Brideshead Revisited (suom. Mennyt maailma ). En tiedä oliko kyseessä liian korkeat ennakko-odotukset vai se, että lukemassani painoksessa sattui olemaan niin räikeän ruma kansi (kuvassa) että silmiin sattui, mutta en pitänyt tästä yhtään. Liian lattea juoni, mitäänsanomattomat henkilöt ja vanhanaikaista kielen kanssa kiemurtelua. (Yli)arvostusta silti löytyy: romaani on listattu ainakin Time-lehden sadan kaikkien aikojen parhaimpien romanien listalle . Kirjavinkeissäkin oli sattumalta juuri eilen tästä positiivinen arvio .

So I decided to find out what all the fuss is about and read the classic. I have to admit that I didn't enjoy the book very much. The novel was packed full of fancy metaphors and verbiage, suffocating manners and politeness. The entire plot seemed to vanish somewhere between the old-fashioned Englishness and the grand aristocratic mansion of Brideshead. The novel tells the story of the Marchmain family as seen through the eyes of Charles Ryder, a painter. Lord Marchmain is an unconventional man living with his mistress in Europe.
