Juicy Bits

I've yet another box to share this time, made with more of the fantastic Funky Hand designs from the CD "V. Funky

It's always good when you can combine 2 tasks into one project, isn't it?  Well as I had a project to make the Get Funky blog, and I wanted to wrap the "Established 1994" t-shirt I'd bought for the 21st birthday of one of my nephews in a more interesting way than just a sheet of paper, or even a regular "flat" box I looked around for something to cover both jobs.

Based on a milk carton style box, but in size more like a juice carton, this one stands 26cms high and the sides all measure about 10cms, so it's quite a chunky beast - and there's no hint at what could be inside!
The t-shirt came folded up in a sealed plastic bag, so I rolled the whole thing up like a Swiss Roll and worked out how big to make the box.

Materials and Tools
"Boho Chic" from the Funky Hand  CD "V. Funky
the designs were all printed on textured white Bazzill card
EK Success border punch to make decorative panel
For the tag:
More of the paper designs, printed in smaller sizes
Corner Rounder,
Pointed Circle dies and plain circle die (both Spellbinders)
Numerals are felted stick-ons (sorry, I can't remember the make)
Natural raffia

If you google "Milk Carton Box" you will find loads of basic templates and also video tutorials too.  As I needed this box to be much bigger, I half on each of 2 sheets of printed card (front and left side on one, back and right side on the other).  I also needed more height, so I only had enough card at the lower edge to make some flaps (about 1.5 cms), then cut two squares from plain card for the actual base of the box - by sandwiching the flaps between the 2 squares it made a neater and firmer base for the box

I had a moment of inspiration and printed the card with this great horizontal striped design -  which made lining up and joining the 2 pieces together ito make one box a breeze!

love these bright and bold colours and designs - I used more of them to make this card, which I blogged last week, but hey, here it is again ;)

Gift Bag and Tag

Hi, this time I've a gift bag to share with you - it's another Funky Hand project, so you'll find it over on the Get Funky Inspiration Blog too - it's worth jumping over there as there's a new project every day!

I've used  "Spring Morning" designs from this month's showcase CD "V. Funky to make this one, and it's nice and easy because I've used an Xcut die to make the bag, then made it "my own" with a hand cut tab and tie closure and a different tag from the one you get in the die set

Materials and Tools
"Spring Morning" from the Funky Hand  CD "V. Funky
the designs were all printed onto "Diamond White" Bazzill card, which has a lovely soft sheen to it (but makes photographing difficult!)
Gift Bag die set (Xcut)
Tab closure is hand cut
EK Success border punch
Tag die (the top part is a Crafters Companion die, but I prefer straight sides so trimmed it down)
the Flower on the tag is made with this paper from the set:
I cropped, resized and printed just a section of the paper in 2 sizes and coloured the petals with 2 colours from the Spring Morning collection, then cut the flowers out by hand
Tiny circle punch (Xcut)
Bakers Twine

I hope you like it - my tip for today is to experiment at printing on different kinds of paper and card - you'll find lots of new ways to use your Funky Hand stash!

Sketch for August

The new LO on The Sketch File is called Bouncing Circles - my first card using the sketch doesn't have circles (unless you count the flower centres), but that's the whole point of the sketches really - they are not prescriptive, its all about seeing the pattern and then having fun with it in your own way - check our how cleverly Brenda has done this over on the BLOG

Materials and Tools
All papers: Funky Hand CD "Colour Me Happy", this colour collection
 is "Glad Rags"
Paper designs are all printed onto white Bazzill cardstock

The flowers are cut from one of the papers and adhered to the wiggly line "stems"  of another of them.  The leaves are hand-cut from scraps

Xcut tiny circle punch used to punch the little flowers from another of the paper designs and make the "brads"
Flower shaped button, Gingham ribbon
EK Success Border punch
Memory Box Flourish die

That's it for this time, Thank you for visiting

All About Me!

Well Lythan can usually be depended on to come up with interesting challenges for The Daring Cardmakers - but this time it's a really WEIRD one - especially if  you are me!

Lythan has challenged everyone to use Little Ol' Me's cards as the starting point for this week's crafting.  I must admit it has been fun to see which bits the others  have picked up on but I hope the whole idea doesn't put everyone else off joining in this week!
So it left me in a bit of a quandary as to what to myself.  Another shaped card maybe, I seem to have been in that sort of mode lately? But no, I decided just to do what I love most - make a flower then decide what to do with it!
You think I plan ahead...................
In the end I went down my tried and trusted path of flowers and swirly stuff....which as it turned out is what most of the others picked up on!

Materials and Tools
White Bazzill card
Satin Ribbon, Inks
PC generated sentiment
SU Blossom punch
Spellbinders leafy swirls die
MFT DieNamics Doily die

Papers are printed on the white Bazzill card
Twirly swirls made from scrap strips of the papers twirled round a skewer
Layers raised using Collall 3D glue
For the flower I used a few different designs for a bit more "texture", I print on both sides of the card  so I only have to ink the edges of the petals

Thanks for looking, please visit the Daring Cardmakers by clicking HERE
My wonderful and clever nephew Charlie has just Graduated from Uni with a 1st (I'm sooooo proud of him) so I'll be back soon with the Graduation card I made for him

Have a great weekend

Curvy!

I thought it was about time I did a midweek blog - I've fallen back into the bad old ways of only managing to do my DCM card blog post.  Must try harder.

So now that the special birthday this card was made for has come and gone I can share the photos.
This is a commissioned card and it has a curved, or bowed front (like an old-fashioned shop window), What with the depth of the card because of the bowed front and the rather extravagant flower set into the aperture I decided not to risk the Postie squishing it before  it even reached my customer, and made a box for it too.
Tools and Materials
All papers are from Funky Hand's beautiful
printed onto white Bazzill card for texture and a nice weight
The front of the card is created using the "Extravagance" Create-a-Card die from Crafter's Companion
Plain Oval and Labels die are Spellbinders
The peony flower was made using petals cut on the Silhouette Cameo
Other items used: Cream card blank, flat backed pearls, satin ribbon

I made the box using WRMK Envelope Punch Board, and added a "belly band" to keep it shut, there's space on the label on the back to add a message
I used more of the same papers to decorate the box.  The flower is cut with an SU punch, the centre is a plain punched circle with a layer of Glossy Accents and a few beads sprinkled in while still wet

That's it for this time, I hope you like this project and will leave a little message ;)

Thanks for looking

On the Road

Someone once gave me the Jack Kerouac book "On the Road" and said "You should read this!.  I don't think I got past the first couple of pages.....
Despite being the sort who likes her "home comforts", I also love to travel and over the years I've been lucky enough to visit lots of wonderful places.  I used to even enjoy the whole "airport" experience - but now that is the part I hate most, it's thoroughly unpleasant and just reinforces my desire for a teleporter!
This week's theme on the Daring Cardmakers is set by our Inking Diva, Svenja and is all about Travel - just in case you hadn't guessed from the waffle, and it being Friday

It’s Svenja here and I’m asking you to look a little further this week as my challenge for you today is (come, sing with me):
"We are going on a summer holiday....."
It’s easy: Make a travel themed card, dream of faraway places, relax and enjoy!

I was all set to make s card with suitcases on it - until I realised why the idea had come so quickly - I'd already done that for a "Suitcase" themed challenge a year or two back...
So I thought I'd resurrect a camper van template which was  one of a summery set of Leo's fab Crafty Templates a while back to make a shaped card.

 Materials and Tools
Camper Van template from Crafty Templates
All papers  from "Come What May" by Funky Hand from the
SU flower punch, plain small circle punch
Inks, Glossy Accents, Pearls

I inked the base card behind the window apertures, then once it was all assembled added Glossy Accents to look like glass.
I cut some of the tiny flowers from scraps of the flowery paper to add some interest to the sides of the van and added flat-backed pearls to their centres

It took so long to think what to do that I ran out of time a bit - I was going to add some suitcases on a roof rack and maybe a few other holiday-related things on the grass in front of the camper van.  Ah well maybe that would be taking things a bit too far anyway.

Thats my lot for today,  I forgot to blog my first card for the July Sketch File LO earlier in the week, so I'll do that over the weekend.
Head over to the Daring Cardmakers Blog to see what the rest of the team have made for Svenja's challenge this week
Thanks for popping in today

Welcome Baby

I love this cute elephant image from Funky Hand and have used it to make a fair few cards since it appeared on the Colour Me Happy CD a few years ago now.
It's great to use as a fun Get Well Soon card and I've often used it as with this one, to welcome a new baby.  For some reason I always seem to make a shaped card with this image. maybe because it's such a clean, simple design - perfect for someone who isn't particularly neat at cutting out!

This one is about A5 size, made for the folks at Hubby's office to sign and send when one of the team welcomed baby no 3 to their family.

To begin with I printed the spotty patterned paper directly onto a sheet of A4 card, using the "fir to page" option, I turned the card over and chose a plainer design to print on what would be the inside of my card, using the same setting.
Next I cropped the flower design so that there were just a few of the flowers and resized so that each flower would be about 6cm across - this was just done by guesswork.  Again I printed the reverse using a plainer design.
Print job no 3 was to resize the spotty pattern so that it just took up half a sheet of the same A4 card -
The final printing task was to select the elephant image and "put" it onto the workspace on the CD, then expand the image to fill as much as possible of the lower half of the workspace.  As the full workspace is equivalent to a piece of A4 you can get a good idea how big the print will be.
This was printed and used as a cutting template for the elephant.

I cut around the paper copy of the elephant leaving a little margin all around the edge, then folded the A4 card in half and paper-clipped the paper copy in place - making sure to have the top lying above the fold so that you don't end up with just two, un-joined elephant shapes ;)

I used the A5 piece with the smaller dots just to cut out the head section and glued in place leaving the ear section unstuck, and also the part of the trunk where the ends of the wires will be hidden and sealed safely away

Then I used some black card just to cut the eyelashes piece from the template

For the flowers I cut around a couple of the flower shapes and punched some 1.5cm circles from some of the spare card for the flower centres, and some slightly larger circles to cover the ends of the wire on the reverse.
If you like using card candy, but end up being over-run by packets of the stuff,  try making your own, perfectly matching, in-the-size-you-want candy: Use craft punches, die cuts  (lots of dies have circles as part of the die cut) etc to cut the circle you need, from exactly the part of a design you want to use (like the spotty one in the centre of the green flower), next simply rub an embossing ball tool on the reverse to create the domed shape.

The wires are twirled around a bamboo skewer, leaving a few cms at each end  plain  for fixing in place. I'm a bit paranoid about  making sure the ends are all made into tight, flat spirals (using pliers) and glued into pieces of paper or card  before they are attached to the project - then I add a "cover" of a piece of card to keep everything in place and tidy.  On the trunk of this project the wire are concealed and glued with a strong glue inside the two layers of card.

Finally I made a little notice for the elephant to hold by printing the sentiment, cutting it out at an angle and adding it  to another piece of scrap card.  The ribbon bow just hides and neatens where the wires go inside the elephant's trunk sections.

I used:
Elephant Image from Colour Me Happy CD
Paper designs from Colour Me Happy CD
300gsm white card
Black Bazzill
Green wire
Very narrow pink ribbon

Thank you so much for coming to visit today - I hope you like my little elephant.

Paper Peony

Last Friday there was another  "Forgotten Funky" showcase over on "Get Funky"  - this is an inspiration blog for the Funky Hand shop and there are at least a couple of new ideas posted each week.
Mostly the DT take turns at showing what we've been making with our own choices of goodies from the Funky Hand website, but every now and then one of the older collections is chosen and we all make something new to share on one lovely big post.

The current "Forgotten Funky" is a real stunner!  It's called Summer Wedding and its one of four on the same theme - you can probably hazard a guess at what the other 3 are called.
It's one of my favourites because the colours are so gorgeous - and it's not just for weddings

I used lots of layers of papers, some raised up on dimensional glue.
The paper peony is made from layers of petals cut from a couple of different papers

Papers: all Funky Hand; "Summer Wedding" download
Bazzill white card to print on
Satin ribbon tied in a double bow
Border punch; EK Success
Swirl Die; Spellbinders

The peonies in my garden are all starting to open out - they've been in bud for seemingly ages, just waiting for a few nice sunny days before they open properly.  There are masses of buds - I think all the rain we had during the winter may not have been great for us, but the plants LOVED it!  Climbers have climbed higher and things I'd forgotten I'd planted have flowered at last!

Anyway, enough of the waffle!
I have more crafting to do and I must send the BFoP (Bad Fairy of Procrastination) on her way....Honestly, she is such a pain in the derrière .....

Seeing Stars!

Zuzana is the hostess for the Daring Cardmakers Challenge this week:

  'Wish Upon A Star'
Do you like watching the stars in summer? I believe everyone does! My favourite are meteor showers. You don't need any special equipment. Spread a blanket on the ground and look up into the dark night sky.

Now, I would like to see stars on your cards. Create a project with a universe or astronomy theme, fairy-tales, sports, birthday stars, music rock stars, stars on the flag ... whatever you fancy!
There are some fabulous and inspiring designs from our Design Team - visit the BLOG to see them.

Even though I quite often choose stars for those tricky male cards for some reason this time I found it quite hard to see beyond Christmas themes.  So I turned to my trusty Funky Hand stash and in particular the Papercraft Factory CDs - oh how fab these CDs are with so many paper choices, images and even templates for making all manner of things - all resizeable in the built-in workspace.
The papers I've used are from the "Happy, Happy Birthday" CD and I've mixed the "Just for Men" and "Birthday Boy" colour sets to make this card
Papers all from "Happy, Happy Birthday" CD by Funky Hand printed on white Bazzill
large and small bunting is handcut
Large star punch, stars folded for dimension*
Inks, Bakers Twine
* to make the 3D stars, use a punched or die cut star then fold (wrong sides and crease on all the lines shown - try to avoid creasing too hard at the centre point (you might end up with a hole, or a "scuffed" patch if you do)
Open out and now form just the bits of the lines marked red into valley folds

Now just squeeze in on the folds on the pointed sections until you get the shape you like.

I used Collal 3D glue to fix my stars to the card

That's it for this time, thanks for visiting - please leave a comment

Origami Challenge

It's Leo's turn to set the challenge for The Daring Cardmakers  this time:

"This week we're turning to Japan for our inspiration and more specifically to the art of paper folding,
Origami
I'd like you to use either something inspired by Origami on your card or to have a go at making your own Origami embellishment. There are lots of online tutorials to look at with lots of different origami designs perfect to use in paper crafting so it's well worth having a go. If you need more inspiration to kick start your imagination take a lookat the BLOG to see what the design team have cooked up, (and folded up!) this week"

Quite a few years back I had a phase of doing a bit of Origami, thanks to a little paperback book I had.  I remember making things like an elephant and a bird which, when you pulled it's tail, flapped its wings.  I didn't really get much further with my paper-folding though, and probably moved on to another of my Crafty Dabbles - lace making...candle making..or whatever else took my eye!

So, when I read Leo's dare, I thought it would be fun to revisit the craft and hopefully, with the (new) help of the t'internet with all those video tutes etc maybe I'd actually manage to get a bit further and have less squares of crumpled paper.......
Hmmm. or maybe not!
I must have looked at LOADS of tutorials, and even sat with my squares of paper and followed quite a few of them.   Some were really good and some started off fine and then got to a tricky bit and no amount of scrolling back and looking again helped show what the person was doing.
So, my bin is full of crumpled squares of paper - good job that in most cases I used squares cut from scrap paper.
In the end though, I found Leyla Torres' "Origami Spirit" blog and things started to look a lot brighter.  Her videos are so clear and she explains carefully and at a lovely, slow pace what she is doing at every step.  From here I made this flower - taking her advice to use a supple, malleable paper so that tearing isn't so likely.  I used some handmade paper that matched the other papers I wanted to use.
Do you like the paper designs?   They are a sneak peek at a brand new, "coming soon" paper collection from Funky Hand..... gorgeous, aren't they?

Tools and Materials
Origami flower
"Hollow Petal Flower" - tutorial is HERE
Handmade Mulberry paper

Spellbinders Leaf Swirl dies (top left and bottom right), Butterfly
Crafters Companion Leaf 2 (behind flower)
XCut Tiny circle punch to make "card candy" pink and aqua embellishments from scraps of the papers - shaped with an embossing tool
Ice Stickles (Crystal)

It would be fab if you'd take a look at what the The Daring Cardmakers team have made this week for Leo's unusual challenge - and better still if you'd join in and fold some paper too!

That's all for this time, thanks for visiting

Funky Retro Fun

Next up on our tour of Funky Hand's fabulous Download and CD catalogue is the Retro Fun Wordbook.
In this Download set you get all you need to make Anice's famous wordbooks. plus each of the designs as a "regular" paper too - so you don't just have to make wordbooks with this set, but you do have all you need to make and decorate one if you do.
I've always liked this set, the colours and designs are really fab with a great mix of flowery/stripey/dotty patterns and some of the most usable plain colours I have available - I quite often print these out on card as they work so well for many projects
This time I made a card
Materials and Tools All the papers used on this card are from the 'Retro Fun Wordbook' download. Some I've resized and printed to half A4 size and some are quarters of an A4 sheet - that way I get quite a lot on an A4 sheet - even more if I print on both sides ;).
Also used: MFT DieNamics Perfect Petal Trio die set
Xcut Small circle punch, EK Success border punch
This picture gives you an idea of what's in the download

A Box Full of Flowers

I've been itching to make one of these "card in a box" cards for ages and at last I've done it!  Actually, I did a prototype the other day, but that was just to check how it worked.  I really wanted to use the limited "Mother of Mine" set of papers as I knew the flower design would be perfect to cut in different sizes and use to fill my box
This collection is only available for a couple more days, so if you've not got yours yet hop over to the Funky Hand website and get them PDQ!

As I so often do I printed the things I needed directly onto white Bazzill card.
An A4 piece printed on both sides for the box, then other bits and pieces to make the flowers, grass, decorative panels etc
I printed the flowery paper out in a couple of different sizes and then cut out lots of the flowers to use- some are attached on thin pieces of scrap green card, soem on lengths of wire so that they bounce around.
I cut the "grass" on my Silhouette machine and the butterflies were cut with my brand new Spellbinders "Flutters" die (the large ones) and a little punch for the small ones.

Spellbinders labels 26(?), and Flutters butterfly ide
Wire, Stickles

Flowers Rock!

Over on the Funky Hand website, there is a special download collection available at the moment.  It's a limited time edition and although it's a special Mother's Day set called "Mother of Mine"  the papers in particular are fab for other times too.
I decided to make a card just using the papers to share today - to show that despite being a Mother's Day collection, they are really, really versatile.
I'm very much enjoying the giant set of circles dies that DoCraft kindly sent in my little package for the current sponsored Daring Cardmakers challenge - so I made another rocker card using the Funky Hand papers printed directly onto white Bazzill card.
I printed the flowery paper out in a couple of different sizes and then cut out some of the flowers to use on the card, the words paper makes a great alternative to adding a sentiment - wouldn't that be so cute for a baby card, Valentines. Anniversary or an Engagement card?
DoCraft-Xcut Grand Circles die set
Spellbinders Scalloped circles die set
Green seam binding

There are three versions to choose from each with a coloured-to-match and plain ready-to-colour image plus 6 gorgeous papers, so where you call her Mum, Mam or Mom there's one that's just right for yours!

Printing and Pyramids Tutorial

I've not got a Daring Cardmakers card to share this week - hopefully that will be along later as I really hate having to miss making my card for the blog.  This week Miri is celebrating the birthday of one of he Grimm brothers by asking for cards inspired by Fairy Tales.
The team have come up with some fantastic ideas, so please visit the blog to see them - and test yourself to work out which fairy tale they were inspired by

Sometmes, life gets hectic and something has to move down the queue - this week it was my DCM card :( With a bit of luck though, I'll be in Fairy Tale mode over the weekend!

One thing I'm trying to do just now is collect up and add side-bar labels for tutorials I've made and blogged.  The reason for this is that I often go to make something and then spend ages looking for where I've put the instructions.  Even when I blog them I forget to add the link in the sidebar, hopefully this will mean I don't spend hours wading through photos just to give me an inkling as to when I made something and help me find my instructions.
This is a tutorial that first appeared on the Funky Hand "Get Funky and Craft" blog and shows how I prepared the designs for printing and making a pyramid shaped card
  Funky Hand Pyramid Card

If you've never made a Pyramid  card before then here's a great way to use your Funky Hand downloads and have a go at one straight away.

I made one of these for the first time a few weeks ago using Bazzill card and then adhering patterned paper to decorate it.  I usually use much thicker card for my card blanks but this style of card is quite bulky when folded.  Part way through making it I had an "A-ha!" moment and realised that using my Funky Hand downloads I could print the first "layer" directly onto card and create a thinner and easier to fold pyramid card base,
Of course you could simply print your chosen Funky Hand designs directly onto the card without any tweaking at all, but I thought you might be interested to see how I get the most from my sheets of card, as by doing it this way you're left with lots of space on each sheet which you can then print more designs on to use in decorating your card.

I use an old version of Paint Shop Pro to do pretty much any sort of photo or graphics tasks, but I'm sure that other programs, such as PhotoShop have the same sort of tools.  I thought the best thing would be to do a series of screen shots so that you can then have a look around your own photo-editing program for the similar menus, tools and commands.

So here we go - you can click on the pictures for a better look!

Step 1

Select the design you want to use - in this case the pink chevron design from
"I Love You Sew"
Use the tool marked with no. 1 and drag the grab-lines to a rough square shape as indicated in the picture.
Now click on CROP to get rid of the excess "paper"

Step 2

Now you need to find the tool that allows you to RESIZE the image and click on it to open up the resizing window

Step 3

You want to create a square which is about the right size for your project, so go for the ACTUAL SIZE option - this is a fab tip for printing other things like photos and other images just the right size too, btw
* Make sure that it's all set to resize all layers/dimensions at the same time - where I've drawn asterisks on the picture.  I Never touch this section of the box - I just know I'd have a disaster on my hands if I did
* Set to pixels/cms in the box marked no 2 or inches if you prefer to work in Imperial measures
* It's the box marked with no 3 that you change the numbers in rather than the ones marked height/width so as I want a square of around 14cms I changed the number in the RESOLUTION box until the number in the height box were about right
Remember, I just guessed at the original square shape, the height turned out to be a bit shorter than the width so it's the height I need to get the right size for before printing

Step 4

Check all is well before printing by using the PAGE SET UP command.  It brings up a new window with a picture of how your image will look on the page - like the one below

Step 5

You just need to check you printer settings now
You need to use a thin card (about 160gsm) for this particular project to reduce the bulk and make it easier to fold.  I need to use the REAR TRAY to feed this through, and I need 3 copies
Then click print and you're done.

Once you've printed your three squares, don't cut them out straight away.  Measure how much white space you have below the square and use the resizing method above to crop down some of the other designs, and fill the white space with those designs.
You're not finished yet as you can print on the reverse of the 3 sheets too.
If you want to leave the inside of the pyramid "legs" white, just print on the reverse of the "other end" of the card ie not on the back of where the squares are.  Remember that the inside of the legs will show, so if you don't want them plain white, print each of the three pieces with the same paper design on the reverse of the squares.
I hope all that makes sense!

Making the Pyramid

Cut out your 3 squares accurately and fold each in half diagonally
Take the first 2 squares and adhere the edge of the upper one to the fold of the lower one matching the points and edges really carefully.
The edge of the 3rd square is then adhered to the fold in square 2

Hopefully the photos will help make it clearer!

I've used a white square in this middle and clipped the 3 squares together just to show how they all fit - it's not as complicated as it sounds, is it?

Once they are glued together the pyramid just falls into shape of it's own accord really, the two end triangles overlap and are glued together and the base shape is formed.

At this point you need to squash and fold one "face" in half  inwards so that the card can be flattened to go in an envelope

Now you can use all the extra bits of card you printed out to decorate it - just remember to keep the folded-in area fairly simple or it won't fold up!

In true Blue Peter spirit, here are more photos of the one I made earlier!

I really hope you'll have a go at this - it's sure to impress as it looks sooooo much more complicated than it is ;)
