The Sewing Room

So the room, though not complete, is now functional and in use. I'm loving having so much more space!

Last weekend I mounted some shelves above the desk (shelves and brackets from Ikea), and I'm gradually sorting out all my  "stuff" and getting it organised.  I've got lots of magazine holders from Smiggle to keep things neat and tidy. My desk is not so tidy at the moment but I'm working on it!

I've assembled my lovely quilt cabinet and folded all my quilts neatly; I love being able to see them all. The drawers are also nifty for hiding bits and bobs; I have no idea why I own so many pairs of sunglasses, but at least its somewhere to keep them.

I also love having a few quilts hung on the ladder.

And I've now got a spare bed for when friends need a place to crash; I have my first house guest tomorrow!

I still need to sort a few things on top of the chest of drawers, but for now there are a few Melly & Me softies having a rest. I've also got to hang a few things on the walls to make it more homey.

Last up, I still need to get a cutting bench, but as business has been so quiet this month, it'll need to wait a little longer.

Sewing Room Sneak Peek

It should probably be know as my office, as there is no sewing going on here, unless the bolts of fabric counts. There's just a little more organising to do before I'll show you the room. I've bought some shelves to hang, but I need to paint the brackets first; the shelves came in white but the brackets didn't. I'm also going to purchase a bench at some point that will be for cutting fabric; being tall I need something higher so I don't bend and hurt my back all the time, and using the kitchen bench isn't a long term solution.

But for now, a peek at my quilt cabinet. Though it now has doors and is full of quilts rather than Bella.

And I wouldn't normally show anyone my bedroom, but I'm loving my new bed and all the butterfly goodness.

Binding Found

No sewing, but I did find the perfect binding for my Scrappy Tripalong quilt. As suspected, a black and white stripe was the perfect fit. Now just to find time to get it bound!

A little searching on Gumtree earlier this week found me a 'new' cabinet for my kitchen. I've always wanted one, it was half price, and already assembled. A bit of effort required to get it home but I love how it looks in the kitchen. Plus now all my pretties are on display. All my mixing bowls are tucked away in the draw.

I've actually lost a little storage space, but it looks so much nicer than my shabby old cupboard. The only casualty was my lovely Just Joey rose; we lost our balance getting the old cupboard out of the house and the rose snapped at the base. Never mind, she'll be replaced soon enough.

And tomorrow should see me finish of the painting in 'the room'; new furniture arrives next weekend so time is of the essence!

Sewing Room: Part Three

The walls are done! We got the second coat on today quite quickly and easily, and it looks so much better.

Sorry, no lights in the room so the photos are a bit dark.

Miss Bella snuck in for a peek while we were washing up and left a few paw prints under the window; luckily we could fix it up.

Just cornices, skirting boards, windows and cupboards to go!

Sewing Room: Part Two

Yesterday was painting day; mum and I both pulled up our sleeves and got stuck into it. You don't realise how bad the old colour was until you see the new colour near it. It was a real 80s mushroom/stone colour.

The walls haven't been painted in at least 25 years, so they aren't in the best condition. We'll have to do a second coat next weekend, and finish off the cornices and skirting boards, and most likely the cupboard doors.

I'm really not enjoying the smell of paint wafting through the house, but not too long and I'll have myself a new room!

Off and Quilting!

Finally I've got my Scrappy Trip in the machine. I was going to use a zigzag/honeycomb quilting line, but after one row I wasn't too keen, so I 'unquilted' it and went with my original plan: two straight lines down the sides if every row.

I may turn the quilt around and do the same in the other direction, but at the moment I like the look and feel of it. And it's far less lines than my Hopscotch quilt!

The sewing room has been sanded and washed down today; painting happens Saturday!

Sewing Room Part One

I really wanted to pay someone to paint my sewing room-to-be, but all the quotes came in around $1000. That's a lot of potential fabric! So I'm sucking it up and I'm going to tackle it one job at a time.

First up is filling in all the holes and cracks. This house is a 50s weatherboard, so it tends to move and crack a lot. We've also had a lot of pictures hung in that room over the years. My local hardware store was very helpful, recommending a product which could be applied and scraped away on one go. Too easy!

So I've been around the room filling all the holes and long cracks. Bella has very carefully inspected my work; hopefully she approves.

The only thing that has me stumped is this headless screw. I have no idea how to get it out of the wall!

Hopefully this weekend will be sanding, then the painting can begin!
